Exactly my thinking, i had a creative outburts of having a region of outer space where some of the factions have some numbers there and they have their own big events instead of just connecting my homebrew to the main stuff in the central part of 40k like the black crusades
I might write them to have a part of some of the big events in 40k but mostly they live in their own little area

I know they're big but I'm horrible with numbers (and overall scale) because of my dyscalculia, so it gets hard for me some times

The fun part is when you get to the "accessory" planets like random volcanic world with a transient Miner population of 500 or something. People forget that a lot of planets lay claim to everything within their solar system also and so you see some people that have a totally un-exploited moon. Shame!

I have a Sector on the upper galactic north in Obscurus where its entire half is unexplored and occupied by empires of humans/aliens, every one of those white squares is a system to give you a sense of scale

The white lines are designated sub-sectors where planet systems (like our solar system) reside.

The ones beyond that on the left are completely unexplored territory if that helps.

• Sector: Entire square/circle or whatever zone that is designated with thousands of planets and other shit n it
• Sub- Sector: One of many chunks that make up a Sector, each sub-sector has tons or dozens of systems that make it up
• Systems: Again like ours basically a spot that is inhabited by planets like the Solar System we got IRL.

Unironically, helps to apply CK2 logic to the order of things. Sector is a duchy title, sub-sector is a county, system is a barony, so forth and so on

Come Sectors, you are talking about the 5 Canon ones and not more (Well technically you could but given Sectors are 1000+ Sub Sectors...)

You have to be clear with planet names and system names, however IoM has a habit of naming Systems after the most prominent planet in said system.

For example, Cadia (the planet) in Cadia (the System)...and in this rare case, even Cadia (the Sub Sector)

Yeah id say start practicing in MicrosoftPaint a bit on some/space background. For example this is what my Sector would look like if it was fully mapped out and the Imperials actually moved further into it and set up other sub-sectors.

Its like the way people make borders IRL, all just lines on a map.

Also sticking entirely to making systems on a sector map then choosing to specify what a particular system's function and the planet's in it might be like is the latter step.

for example my Chapter is entirely in the Desmodenes system

but since i cant be fucked to specify beyond that i just put an Astartes icon on it

The fun part is the Moebian Domain gives us an example of how fucked up and complicated the Imperial Guard can be too. Since they arent raising from one planet, but raising them as a whole Sector. So you get the Moebian 6th and 21st, but only one is from Atoma and the 21st is from not-Atoma

Otherwise start writing the lore on MicrosoftWord or something, from there it will absolutely bloom like crazy.

My Sector page was like a mere 10 pages before it exploded to like 100+ over a month of me just constantly noting ideas and adding them onto it later.

Also if you really want you can even specify the warp route conditions between different Systems.

(Talking of which, another clarification: travelling between different Systems is the scale at which Warp travel is needed. Travelling between planets inside a given system is still real-space only compatible)

Do you need a planet to be important? Give it easily warp-routes and a huge gravity well. Then your irrelevant nowhere is now a Hive World because its stupid easy to swing through

So don't feel pressed to have too many explanations

Just say "hostile power disrupted [warp thing x] at time of plot"

Inherently, one part of the Imperium and its ships and information travelling is, besides Atropaths, they invoke the age of sail and duscovery. There's a reason half the Rogue Trader art looks like Spaniards. Its 1700 and you'll need a few months to swing by next door
