The thing is the main 40k discords are filled to the brim with Imperium/Space Marine fans, they will largely tell you anything with marines is good reading material when a lot of warhammer books are just made for sales without any good narrative depth.

Question: what are some bigger or scarier enemies a scrappy underdog veteran guardsmen could reasonably, with a lot of luck and grit, take out?

I feel like a chaos space marine is a little too powerful

If the guardsmen has a melta or plasma it isn’t at all

Need plasma/melta/some other special weapon to be more believable: CWE aspect warrior, Drukhari Incubus, Marines(all inclusive), ogryn with armor, Grotesque, Hearthkyn Warrior, tau battle suit(crisis or stealth), Tyranid warrior

Lasgun is fine: normal wych, normal kabalite warrior, eldar guardian, cultist champion, ogryn without armor, high ranking traitor guardsmen officer, anything human in carapace armor can die to a lasgun without much issue.

A lot of factions have gear lasguns really cannot deal with without concentrated fire/getting extremely lucky with a gap

So if they’re on their own the best bet to kill something impressive is always gona be grenades or special weaponry

I think a good thing to keep in mind is the big difference between one lasgun and 10,000 aimed on the same target

There's an excerpt of a Chaos Marine warning some other slaves to darkness to not dismiss the lasgun because it's can still kill them dead if enough guardsmen aim right

I’m thinking the guardsmen in question has a krak grenade or a melta gun, having the reader belive that’s how the marine will die but the conflict twists, and the final blow ends up being a lucky chainsword strike eviserating the neck

It would probably require the legionnaire in question go be pompously monologuing which is an overused trope or something to that extent

The Chaos Marine getting worn down by both the krak grenade and melta before the guardsmen snuffs him with a chainsword is totally believable imo
