the equation is pretty simple

In Shadowrun, grenades have actual blast wave mechanics.

A grenade sends out a wave in each direction that has X damage assigned to it. If it passes through a person, it does that damage. If it hits a solid object, subtracts some damage from the blastwave according to the material it struck and then goes in the opposite direction if it doesn't do enough damage to outright destroy the wall/structure.

So if you're in the middle of a metal box when a grenade goes off, the 4 blast waves will hit you(Probably killing you), bounce of the walls, hit you again(Surely killing you), and rinse and repeat until the blast waves peter out as you are a fine mist in the center of the room.
