And I'd say yes and no. Explorators tend to either accompany or lead Mechanicus explorator fleets, or end up on a Rogue Trader vessel, I'm guessing Magos Errants are more likely to travel alone or with a small cadre of servitors and lower brethren. More self-sufficient.

Might be a rank they stick Magi in who can't be gotten rid of but are too curious and eccentric to leave in place on some forge world.
