It looks like things that are outdated or retconned are still in some flavor useful, as it can just be an unreliable narrator-or whatever scribe was writing the text was missing some information.

So there is value in reading older stuff that’s overwritten by newer things i assume?

For example the Emperor's origin, his shaman thing has never been said ever again in the setting, even Master of Mankind the book just shows him being born in some village in anatolia which you could pass off as his reincarnation following the mass suicide by the shamans.

That kind of stuff.

But in contrast most other pre 4th edition stuff is very much non-canon, ala the goofier eras of Rogue Trader that just get reinstated as more "serious" stuff like Ian's example with Illiyan Nastase who just got turned into an actual eldar character instead of what he was previously.

The most "recent" huge retcon was the Indomitus Crusade/Plague Wars placement due to its timewise not making any sense.
