The Iron Hand chapter are often misunderstood and this is true to how they would be viewed in lore. They feel the crushing weight of duty like no other chapter can because they failed, they failed to do their duty, they have failed to do what it is their father wished for them and they have failed at being astartes.
This failure is compounded upon their genetic (yes genetic) depression and unrelenting rage bought upon by the death of their father, Ferrus Manus. This overwhelming force of emotion pushes them to human vice and almost heretical thinking. They cover their removal of the flesh and their human elements as a doctrine, a method to rid themselves of the weakness within them and yet...its not really for that.
It is a coping mechanism, a crude attempt to dull the pains of emotion, where other astartes struggle to understand humanity, the Iron Hands understand very well. So much. It scares them into removing it by force. For they are tools of war and not designed to act as such, the astartes, his angels. Yet they are as human as you or me.
These acts of self-mutilation are akin to self harm, an attempt to feel something behind the crushing weight of emotionless or to prevent themselves to feel anything under the pressure of too much emotion. These acts are also reflected within the very politics inside the chapter. We have members who follow one of two doctrines;
"The flesh is weak" - the first half of the Iron Hands motto which shows off their new doctrine. Its a statement of what they believe and nothing more. Flesh is weak so it should be removed and replaced with emotionless bionics.
"But deeds endure" - the often forgotten second half of the motto which presents the entire motto in a better light. Although your flesh may decay and begin to fail you, the deeds you achive during your short time matter far more than you ever did for when you are gone what do you leave behind but the memory of your actions.
These mottos are representative of the two doctrines believed by the Iron Hands and subject of plenty debate and struggle within the chapter and their leaders. These warriors are not just tools of war but men playing the part of the soldier, scared, lost and afraid they will once again fail to live up to their purpose. They shed their human selves to rise to the task but leave only shells of people behind, a grim shadow, no better than a servitor controlled by a magos.
This matter of human emotion can also be shown in the stages of grief;
-Denial – Ferrus Manus didn’t die. He couldn’t have.
-Anger – They still have a deep seeded hatred for the Salamanders and Raven Guard chosing a taget to blame other than themselves.
-Bargaining – There have been attempts to resurrect Ferrus, desperate to undo their past failings.
-Depression – The removal of human emotion, in an attempt to stop the pain of feeling too much or to feel something at all.
-Acceptance – The realization that the human mind is strong and should not be discarded and to stay true to Ferrus' words and teachings.
In current day the Iron Hands are torn between stage four and five. Some wish to move on and embrace the old teachings of their father, fully accepting their human emotion for that is as much as a tool as any weapon avalible to them. Yet many of them remain stuck to their new teachings, ripping anything human from their core.
