And in this river below you've heard tale of ancient mythical beast that live in it but you can't know if they're true unless you use the river.
The new bridge being built grants everyone the ability to cross it and the river safely, and is pretty far into completion. Until some manic man decides to cross it before it is done, with a car, because he believed he needed to get somewhere urgently.
This causes the bridge to break and destroys the ancient structure that was there, enough to where it can never be used again to help build the new bridge. Thus destroying all the progress made and forcing everyone to continue crossing this raging dangerous river for the foreseeable future.
