maybe if it's related to waste disposal since resin can't be recycled usually

i honestly think the switch to injection moulding is just the basic long term cost savings

plastic costs far less to produce in the long run than resin

and GW expect 40k's popularity to only keep on rising over the years, meaning they'll need to keep up with the demand for volume

i don't know the reasons behind that but it's the info i could find in cost analyses comparing the two methods. it might have something to do with the heat required to melt the plastic or the machinery itself being power hungry

i've never worked with resin moulding

what arbitor ian says in his video is true. the initial costs of injection moulding are quite high. a quote for a single mould averaged around 10k$ for me and that was with a third party company that took care of all the machinery. GW does it all in house so they need to pay more for all the tooling, maintenance and designing.

resin casting is a very manual process

and the quality control is hard

(as evidenced by forge world's reputation over the years)

with plastic you can churn out so much more product and it can be done by machine

with resin you have to prep the silicone moulds, pour in the resin, make sure there are no bubbles, it looks like a real pain in the arse

taro modelmaker has some insights into resin casting on his insta

even the way you cut the moulds looks like a pain in the arse

then after all that and you get the model out of the mould you can find out the mould has slipped a bit and theres now a line down the entire thing

also 2 further problems of resin vs plastic - 1) they wont sell resin products to kids, that's a big deal for GW, they wanna be slinging models to kids for sure 2) resin is a lot heavier than plastic, makes the shipping more of a problem

so like from a business point of view plastic is just better in every way

heat and pressure are fun to work with, and then the molds themselves are usually pretty complex with high tolerances, inbuilt cooling and ejection features

youre right that the molds dont add the the energy cost, but its worth noting as a significant overhead
