I think a bit of the issue is that, with DnDification or Warhammerification or Tolkeinfication, you end up running into the same tropes over and over again. This isn't to say those tropes can't be written well, because they absolutely can be, but it can lead to only seeing the same patterns over and over again.

At the end of the day, if it's something you're writing for, say, friends for a campaign or a war game or something just silly and fun, who cares, but I can see the tropes getting repetitive for some, especially in more "serious" settings.
