Skitarii armor comes across as weird and off because they are fitted onto cyborgs, so even if it is supposed to be Carapace equivalent (or better) the minis still come across as quite “slim”.

At most Space Wolves is a coincidence for trying to experiment with animal genetic engineering and that is probably not canon (until they arrived at Fenris and even then, the Canis Helix seems to be a planet specific thing)
Don’t know my Slamanaders lore well enough to comment of their secrecy, though it might have been to do with Vulkan being a Perpetual.

The Salamanders were the ones who delivered the Emperor his final victory on Terra during the Unification Wars, back when they were the Dragon Warriors.

Their greatly depleted numbers left them to act as the Rear Guard of the Great Crusade, where they spent a lot of time being the shield that Xenos broke themselves upon when they prayed on newly Complied worlds, up until they were united with Vulkan.
My theory is that the Emperor was secretly drilling them to be like Vulkan so when he was found, they were able to mesh well with their Primarch.

All 3 legions are related to internal affairs, albeit three VERY different sorts of internal affairs.
Salamanders as the “good cop” policing face.

Alpha Legion for “miscellaneous Spec Ops stuff that no one else can know”

The Salamanders were meant to do what the Imperial Fists couldn't, which is go down swinging. If it had been Dorn in the Throne Room on the Day of Days, he probably would have hit the dead man's switch after contact with the Emperor was lost. Only Vulkan had the resolve to do what needed to be done, and still hold out hope that there could be a miracle at the last possible second.
Where the Fists would see defeat and withdrawal to survive, even if it meant sacrificing civilian lives in the process, the Salamanders would fight to the last man and the last round. Which they did, multiple times.
