In the 3rd edition rule book, where the description for most of the bolter round come from, show diagram of the bolter rounds. The round has the propellant base, main charge, cap, tips, core, etc. And the main charge is connected to the rim of the shell.

On the Metal Storm Frag Shell, it says to have fragmentation casing. So the casing in this case is the jacket, or you know, the "shell", where the usage of the word come from, and is also called projectile casing, than the brass casing. The drawing in that codex is definitely not referencing the cap as the cap is a different part.

Stalker Silenced Shell, it says that the propellant base and main charge are replaced gas cartridge with a different diagram down to the rim and primer, it is also noted that "covert fighting special low velocity solid core bolts are used. Therefore, like Jay referenced about "rocket ball", it is pretty much that and sends the entire round out.

That codex also wrote that the ejector is manual and that the bolter can jam.

Vengeance bolt doesn't even have pointy tips and looks like a "casing", yet it is said to be the anti-SM round, so it makes more sense that the shell as whole fly out, otherwise, there is nothing to fly out.

Its just a random date GW chose, mostly to show that the Necrons, Eldar and Orks were running around ages before humanity existed

Ok as far as we know it’s a random date but it’s way too coincidental. Either it’s a silly Easter egg or more likely imho the codex writers (this was oldcron codex) wanted to leave open a narrative door for some aspect of the War to have triggered the extinction.

One possibility is that the asteroid contained / was the shard of the Dragon.

Another is that it was just debris from some skirmish.

Note that the Tower of Babel contained an Enuncia lexicon and that the moon has ancient webway gates. So there’s a fair bit of evidence that earth was an Old One world.

Also the Emperor found the core of the Golden Throne buried on Earth. It is very very heavily implied in the fantastic Vaults of Terra trilogy that this core is of Old One derivation. Specifically, the Eldar parts of the throne are adapters to allow someone of humanoid proportions to sit on it. The core itself is an even older xenos artifact designed by inference to be occupied by something of greater stature and perhaps different shape.

I would bet $5 it’s a chair for an Old One.

Also obviously controls Webway access and the Webway was made by the Old Ones.

You have to read vaults of Terra carefully to get this but it’s there.
