I have actually given 40k space combat some thought, and, oddly enough, you can justify ships being flying cathedral fortresses…
(1) We know that long distance space travel usually works with warp jumps.
(2) Warp Jumps usually exit near a particular system’s given “mandeville point” [Vet lines in particular mentions this]. Presumably these Mandeville points are actually fixed.

Conversely…

(1) All you have to do to guard against an invasion (planet side warp gate or portal fuckery not withstanding) is to fortify the shit out of the Mandeville points.
(2) since you usually cannot fortify the void of space, you design your ships to be fuckheug to be self sufficient, carry enough guns to scare off an enemy and (generally) be a fortress cathedral in space…

Now, as to the age old “broadsides VS carrier ships” debate…The Imperial Navy’s preference for Big Guns can be excused with the following logic…
(1) Compare a gun loading menial with a void fighter/bomber pilot. Who takes longer to train? Who can, logistically, be easily replaced as long as all you need to do is press gang any living human on any given planet on any level of technology?

At the same time, the cadians seem to get wiped out pretty fast unless its one of the areas where they get infinite reinforcements and they would in theory have better gear than us

His final stand was an 8v1, the fight lasted about 8 minutes and he managed to disable two of the British planes before going down and two more went down after he did due to damage he'd inflicted.

my favorite WW1 plane is probably the gotha G.V just because of how ambitious it was to develop what was at the time a heavy bomber

the service ceiling of this thing was 6.5km

a quick calculation gives me a temperature of -18 celsius at that altitude if sea level is at 25C

and as you can see there's no glass or anything to block the wind
