For me, who has been around since…3rd…the Primaris were too blatant a market plot to get SM players to re-buy their whole range.
And as a history nerd I liked the idea that my 40k minis could be wearing armour from 30k era.
Primaris was a marketing ploy, and destroyed that bit of pseudo-historical connection which made the Marines a bit unique.

krieg, valhallans, those kind of hard core regiments mainly have promotions from whoever survives

krieg officers are very very experienced veterans so they're mostly badasses in their own right

depends on the process. there's multiple types of 3d design software

i use CAD, which is an engineering software that uses mathematical precision to create solids

normally people use mesh modelling software like blender. the difference here is there is a lot more freedom with what you want to accomplish

what's commonly used for minis also is sculpting software which blender also has. another one of these is zbrush

this type of process replicates actual real life sculpting

which is a difficult thing to learn imo

if you're thinking of starting out i recommend blender since it includes many many features and it's free

be prepared for a very long learning curve though

if you want to use cad for free try out freecad or find a student license for any of the big ones. just keep in mind that you're not legally allowed to make money off of student versions

i do not recommend learning cad if you intend to do minis personally. it's a lot of effort and even steeper learning curve than blender

here's the annoying part, both type of software use completely different methods to compute shapes and sizes. a cad model is called a BREP which includes dimensions of solids and their faces. blender works with meshes and vertices which means that if you convert a BREP to mesh you're just downgrading your file. you can easily transfer CAD models to blender but doing the opposite is much more time consuming because you have to essentially replicate every single feature with cad tools

simple answer is:
cad -> blender = easy
blender -> cad = difficult

maybe one day AI will be able to tell cad how to convert meshes to BREP's but i dont think we have that fully yet

since the issue lies with the program not understanding what it's looking at when it sees meshes. it's just looking at a bunch of triangles
