The Old Ones were basically your classic precursor race like most other fantasy and sci-fi universes, they more or less came to the Warhammer World when it was a frozen glacier/dead world and just moved the sun slightly closer and started the pre-ages of the planet and basically treated it like how a gardener might treat their backyard but in a more caring and understanding way.

They were set up to have done this on other worlds as well and established the north and south poles as portal locations which connected to the other worlds they prospered. After that they spawned the lizardmen as their reptillian armies and also created shit like Ogres, Elves, Humans, Halflings, etc etc.

Chaos eventually found the Warhammer World since they were an old enemy of the Old Ones and brust through the polar gates and literally flooded the entire world in daemons, it was during this phase that the Old Ones just simply left because the project for this world basically become unrecoverable.
