Basically back in an era before the Imperium existed and humans were spread across space with super-tech doign whatever they wanted, for reasons we do not know, the robots who served humans rebelled en-masse, we won the war eventually but it was devastating and AI was abhored or generally "banned" by everyone.
Mars was one of these planets where total global catastrophe destroyed the planet and it became like current Mars but even more unlivable, this gave birth to the rise of "machine priests" who became the Mechanicum, cue the meeting with the Emperor thousands of years later and being biased enough to allow them to exist since he was aware they'd supply him with a shit ton of products as long as they became a vassal empire to the Imperium.
Cue the Horus Heresy and other shit and ever since then the Admech has become an integral part to the Imperium, without them basically every mechanical thing probably fails as they almost oversee everything and are in every strata of the Imperium to a degree.
