Basically what happens is a bunch of smaller tyranids, like ripper swarms, come after the main fighting force. These do most of the eating. Then, giant pits of stomach acid are made and every tyranid on the planet jumps in. Then the hive ships send down these giant fleshy straws and slurps it all up.

I recall when the concept was first introduced in 3rd edition with the vehicle design rules
And then they came in 5th or 6th ish
In essence, back then, any unit shooting had them had penalties to both range and the to Hit roll
And most aircrafts had…good AV to protect them (back when Armour Value was still a thing for 40k)
And also an invulnerable save roll to “jinx” out of incoming fire.
And they carried weapons that were mostly high strength, low AP pie plates of doom (also back when blast templates were a thing)
