I personally think men of stone were essentially just sentient ships sent through the warp to establish galactic footholds. Men of Iron were your generic ai terminator bots for war, but Men of Gold were the genuinely sophisticated AIs who also had a warp touch, which were the entities that eventually launched the revolt.
