For just a small 500pt game how well does an neophyte focused shooting list work?
I'm trying to break into 40k and just wanted a nice small force to start with.

by the way that's the correct way to do white ๐
Pure white is very hard to use and doesn't look good as a base coat, it's best used as a final highlight on something really bright for example

I finally got off my lazy bum and started working on the Drukhari I've had lying around for quite some time now.
I do like the effect of Contrast paint over Leadbelcher for a shiny effect. Especially for Xeno factions as it gives it more of an "alien" look, imo at least.
Also, pardon for the poor quality and lighting.
This is the best I can do with what I got.

I'd recommend getting a black and a brown wash, black for the silvers, greens and cooler colours and the brown wash for golds, browns etc
Then after you put on the wash you can return with the original colour and just do the edges of things for an easy way to highlight

Depends on what you're going for, army painter quickshades are very good washes (except the purple) and create deeper colors than I find most GW washes manage.

I was familiar with the old system as well so I can't really say what's the best new approach to this newer system, but the octarius boxset that we got covered our needs pretty well
though now there are more killzones to choose from
the compendium has rules for all the rest of the factions but those are really just the basic version of each faction when the killzones each bring a new clear cut kill team with more special rules to play with (kommandos, veteran guardsmen)

Overally, my opinion is simple, Leagues of Votann are just by far the worst army aesthetic ever put out by GW, they have no redeeming value, and they are a massive misstep on something that should have been so simple.
