Apologies for sounding naïve but what do the different characteristics mean in 40K codex's? I only really know AoS and this is much harder to read in comparison. I understand that M is movement in inches, w is the wounds a model can take,AP is the minus applied to a save roll and D would be the damage of said attack but the rest is pretty foreign.

yee, from what i remember basically equal target toughness and attacker strength means the roll is uh 50/50 or smthn, like 4+, roll is worse if the toughness is certain thresholds higher than the strength, and it's better if the strength is certain thresholds higher than the toughness
one of the big strengths of tau is that their basic troops' weapon, the pulse rifle, is strength 5, which puts it above most of the targets they're shooting

i thiiink it was to wound? to hit is based on the ballistic skill if it's ranged/weapon skill if it's melee of the model attacking
Like, you roll to hit based on BS/WS, you roll to wound based on strength vs toughness, and then your opponent rolls for any saves they have to represent armour/forcefields/whatever
