That is a common myth, there are no examples of maces actually cutting into armor, only examples of denting armor. Same with arrows or crossbow bolts. There were actually modern tests made where people would shoot at plate armor with warbows and in none of these tests where they used proper armor instead of larp armor did the arrows penetrate.
