Well the issue with Tau is more like its boring to play and face

Like the taus have good shooting and will destroy everything they shoot at + they have some stratagems that punish charging or just units with so scary firepower overwatch shot would destroy 75% of your unit

But essentially, playing tau isn't nice because they force both the player and their adversary to play shooting only, which is annoying for melee focused armies

You can win with infantry only, one of the winning tournament team is an IG army with 150 infantry models

And Ad.Mech is the best shooting army bar none

I too use tabletop sim to play some games like that, to try out many lists that I make, and my AdMech lists normally revolve around Skitarii Vanguards with Plasma, Arc pistol and maul, with Kataphron destroyers with more plasma, Kastellans and Datasmiths

ugh I suck at explaining this stuff, retrying textwall. Alright so the steps of painting any miniature are to prime it first, that's the black stuff you're remembering. There are usually guides on the cans for how to use it, just make sure to shake it for a good 2 minutes beforehand and to spray the model from like 15cm~ away so it doesn't get caked on super badly. There are a number of diff colours for primers, but black should do you fine for this.

After that you move onto base painting. Base paints are very strongly pigmented paints, mechanicus standard grey is a good grey base paint you could use iirc. You use them to go over areas of the model with a single flat colour, in this case that means the big cloaks of your admech skitarii. I didn't bother with base painting any more of my skitarii besides the cloak and the trousers, all the fabric bits.

After that you have all the smaller details. In this case you can try out drybrushing for all the metal bits. Drybrushing will, fair warning, wreck your brush over time so use a dedicated brush for it (doesn't have to be made for it, just use one of your brushes for drybrushing). Get some paint on the end of your brush, in this case something like leadbelcher would do you fine (a kinda dull iron-y metal paint), and then wipe most of the paint off on a piece of paper until it's mostly dry. You can then drag the brush over the metal bits, it'll kinda highlight the edges with little bits of paint. It's a very common technique and it's very easy.

After you've done the fabric and the metal bits the skitarii are mostly done in terms of surface area painted, and i'd honestly not even be antsy about using them on the tabletop.

For some more complicated stuff now. There are a number of little visors on these models, like the eyes and stuff, you can just prod those with a blue or something to give them the glowing effect.

Another important bit is washes. These are super thin watery paints, they're literally as thin as water, designed to seep into all the lil cracks of the model to give them depth. Going over all the metal bits with this would give them a lot of very nice definition, just be careful when using them on flatter surfaces cus they will pool, dry and mess it up pretty badly. When using washes always use less than you need, if you use too little you can go over it again after it's dried, if you use too much it can be kinda annoying to work around.

You can also drybrush other bits besides the metal. As an example, you can use a drybrush to highlight all the edges of the fabric, like the angular bits on the hood and the sides of the cloak fabric; you'd use a light grey for this if you're going for a grey-ish colour scheme. Going over the edges with another paint is called edge highlighting, you don't need to do it with a drybrush but it works well enough.

Usually the order when painting, in summary, is prime > base paint the fabric bits (also includes the backpack, also trousers and the cloak and hood) > drybrush the metal bits generously (gives them a nicer effect than just using metal paint on them more l iberally imo), apply wash (you can apply quite a lot to the metal bits since they're very riveted and not flat, for the flat fabric bits be careful with it- if you want a cleaner look you might not even want to apply wash to the flat fabric bits) and then the last little details, like drybrushing the edges of the fabric bits and doing the lenses and stuff

Citadel paints, that's the one games workshop runs, are very high quality but they come in these dumbass big open topped containers that result in the paint drying out before you can use all of it if you're not careful. Vallejo comes in dropper bottles, which remove that issue
