Yeah, since the Flencer attacks from Stealth and only has melee I though it would fit nicely. Thug as Mauler was a clear choice, the Thug has a +4 save which on the tabletop is carapace armor equivalent and the stun on the mace for the chainaxe overhead ! Also being a tanky bastard in general.

Need some advice on painting scheme for my grot ratlings, I wanted to do something stealthy but incorporate red into it because that's the grot revolutionary colors, I was thinking about doing a dirty cloth color for the shirt, like rakarth flesh paired with a camo green color for the pants and the backpacks looking like a very aged leather, the skin will be split 50/50 between a bright neon green skin and a more muted blue green among the squad, thoughts?

Painted my test Grotling in this scheme and honestly ..I don't like it, it looks too militarum, like I painted the ratlings first then head swapped them, I was thinking of doing maybe black pants, dark blue shirts, red accents like belt buckles, armor pads and purple wraps on the legs, I feel like that'll look "stealthy" but still grot enough

Thinning paint is the basics, if you want you can use pipets at the start to get exact ratios so the paint and water drops are consistent but once you're good you can do it by sight and feel, you'll know if your paint is thin enough just by the way it behaves on the pallete

Resin also comes in two types, 3D print and cast resin, 3D print is generally more accessible and cheaper but often more brittle and/or less detailed compared to cast resin

and an addendum to the finecast part, finecast is resin (not a very good type of resin) but from moulds originally used for metal kits, metal models are just called metal or pewter

Oh I have figured something out, I just have to go home and do it, it's just a theory right now, so I have the citadel skulls kit which has the top half and bottom half of an ork skull, what I'm going to do is cut the servo skull off, and put an open mouth ork skull on top, then have a shoota sticking out of the mouth part, and add more cables and wires as supports

After the Heresy weekender I've been in a huge hobby fever and got an idea of a list for my Sons of Horus what to do next. I've never really planned an army before buying any miniatures so this feels like an all new way of hobbying for me, I've always just picked and chosen any models I've happened to have when building a list for gaming but this time around I got a nice thematic idea for an army so I pretty much had to execute it.

I'd use those bumps as a screw point and just put some short screws on with washers and nuts to hold it in (assuming the bumps are hollow underneath the tub)

If you need to prime during the winter, get some hot water in a bucket or some receptacle, soak the spray can in the water for a few minutes without putting the nozzle under and you should see better results for cold days, because when its dry and cold that should be a good combo

i need to buy new primer, what are good substitutes for chaos black and wraithbone primer?

The black I use is Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover 2X Flat Black

And then same but Flat White for the white

Been very happy with them so far, goes on nice and thin with great coverage

I don't know why this is happening, I'm going slow, taking my time letting the coats dry and the base coat still looks rough and textured, I have no idea what I'm doing wrong

I'm about to drop the whole project and move on it's so upsetting

if it was rough and textured when you primed it then more paint isnt going to fix it

I absolutely despise priming, it seems like I have a problem with every single model on the priming step lately

I rattlecan primed exactly twice and ended up with smooth and then bumpy

then dont prime and just paint on the model

Since I started preparing it better I’ve never had issues with primer unless the weather is fucked

1. put the rattlecan into warm water for ten minutes
2. shake it like fuck, when you think you’re done shaking, shake it some more
3. quick bursts a few inches away from the model
4. take the model inside to dry

Really the water trick helps the most

In addition to those, before you prime models spray something before to clean the nozzle from clumped up paint

And yeah, short bursts, allow the previous layer to dry before doing it again and about 15 cm away is good distance

checking the humidity before priming is always a good idea too

if you never want to worry about any of this again, just got vallejo primer panzer grey and slap it on

vallejo primer is the one hobby paint I will actively recommend against, the brush ons are terrible and the cans are some how more fragile

not a knight, an actual FW titan

non-sandable primer is a bad idea because this means if it gets nicked, it will peal off

its actually why I actively avoid vallejo paints, because urethane is not a great artist material

I use lascaux for metallics, I dont like mica paint because it looks gritty to me so tmm was a complete miss for me like it was ok but it still reflected light like a mica and I dont use AK after their controverial marketing caampaign that had to do with dead bodies from the holocaust

yep, it was a whole thing that got swept under the rug because most people think their paints are high quality when they are legally student grade

Lmao i have a bottle of micaceous iron oxide and if its over any base but brown it looks like dirt flecking
Ironically, while this makes it bad for metal mixes and stuff it's a great dirt wash for boots and stuff

@sick ledge okay 2nd coat was the fix, I feel like I have to unlearn citadel rattle cans, the Vallejo ones shoot out a really fine fog as opposed to the very strong targeted spray of Citadel

I was moving the can as fast as I did with citadel cans and it barely left any on the model

Okay so the primer was defenitly the problem, I reprimed them, and did 3 layers of Russ grey and it's as smooth as can be

You could also work more towards the shadows without the need to go that much further with the highlights

I may do a 1:1:1 The fang, rhinox hide and black and just do the deepest recesses and shadows

If you want to be fancy leave the black out of it and use something like a dark purple instead

and not just the recess shadows, but where the natural shadows would fall, opposite of the volumetric highlights

I'm not sure if that's what you were saying but the shadows on the knees and inner thigh and under the chest plate are painted 🙂
