How would you paint the xenophase blade from space marine 2? What i was thinking of doing was basing thr blade in lupercal green and black 1:1 then on the blade do a coat of caliban green on the blade, then glaze warpstone glow towards the top and base, them warpstone glow and moot green 1:1, then pure moot green before a small bit of phalaynx yellow, then edge highlighting the whole thing in gauss blaster green

Need some advice picking a color scheme for my necron kill team, I have 3 choices milling about, from left to right 1. Leadbelcher prime>black templar over all the armor panels
2.black prime>vallejo model air metallic black>nuln oil 3. Grey seer prime>vallejo metal color duraluminium> 1:1 black templar and contrast medium, this one turned out really splotchy, it may be because of the base coat, not sure. Thoughts?

You'd be surprised. There's guys with 5k USD dental scanners using them on minis over in Spain and Russia. Printed scans now make up a huge portion of the recast market, and GW themselves 3d print a lot of their prototypes for the Heavy Metal team to paint before the molds get made (you can see layer lines on a lot of model reveals.)

Most scans are terrible, and I wouldn't endorse any because copyright, but they are becoming a larger thing than before.

Oh I know all about the high end ones, I was talking about the ones that got "leaked" on cults. Ive seen the ones from the good recasters as I'm friends with a few of them in Ukraine, but they still arent as nice as plastic and you can easily tell them apart at a distance despite what people want to claim about them. I also own one of those super expensive scanners because I need it for work and they have some serious flaws.

Those scans also never get leaked out, its always the trash ones unless its some OOP metal model like steel legion

This is true. I also own a scanner (I built one a while back). I use it mainly to put my minis in TTS, so a different use case (less accurate, no scanning spray).

I disagree though on the second part, you can absolutely get things that are 1:1 GW quality. I tested mine out with some sculpts I made and also a benchmark thing, and you can absolutely get enough detail. And that's with a $300 open source design, not even a real high end one.

Big difference is in feel. Things printed in resin can't be cut as easy as plastic, more just kinda shaved. Appearance wise though there's not really any detail difference between a 3d printer and something injection molded.

I've just seen a lot of really bad prints and a lot of really bad scans of models at my LGS, I dont see a point to buying recasts since used official forge world stuff is about the same price and its easy enough to strip and repaint it

I want to do something kind of RPG-style. The grenade launcher profile has frag/krak shots, right? And in an RPG you’ve got both fragmentation and shaped-charge rounds… so I figured I’d use the rocket launcher from the heavy team, just not fully assembled — make it smaller, more handheld.

All modern phones have pretty solid cameras usually. You can easily switch them on for more quality images.

And yeah, lighting is super important. You can't have direct source of light but also you need natural and warm light but also not yellow warm

Yeah I've spent a good dozen hours finding "the best" possible light bulbs for painting / pictures, but focusing on options that are 5000K temperature and at least 85+ CRI should do really well

Yellow warm will give you piss filter, white cold will give you over exposure.

From my understanding, you just want something to "disperse" the light beam. If you have good lamp but it has direct source of light, you can quite literally hang a very thin sheet of paper to disperse it and it can work.

But its very fiddly.

Well, every original space marine chapter was a legion once. And when they got split, they became chapters, and every chapter that wasn't THE legion (Blood Angels, Ravenguard etc) became a succesor chapter. It means it can have its own flavor and colour scheme and its its own entity but still can use tactics and colors like the father chapter. People make custom chapters all the time, its also like... ancient tradition that you can do it

painting yellow will frustrate you a lot

with shoulders you can just glue them after airbrush leaving them unpainted
