I'd try mixing an orange with a copper metallic paint and doing several thin layers till you get good coverage, then finish with a gloss or satin varnish to really get that sheen on it.

Is Balthazar Gold a good enough copper?

Balthasar is a bit darker, I'd be looking at Hashut Copper, but you could probably use either tbh, might just need a brighter orange to get the tone you want with Balthasar

Game Colour: Scarlet Blood and Orange Fire

Jokaero is the only orange I have from that list, but it seems to turn out similar to the beetle's colour

When you mix the colour into the metallic, you kinda want the colour to be the consitency of an ink. I'm mainly going off this video on how to colour metallics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9q35BPaBN0 He uses silver/steel for his metallic, but I think since copper is close to the beetle's tone it'd work well.

Further query: how'd you make it shimmer green? Since chrismas beetles have a bit of green to 'em when the light hits them just right

Could be worth doing a green + silver metallic layer below, then doing your orange metallic layer over that green base. That way you can have a few thinner spots where some of the green might show through. I'd honestly just experiment to see what happens on a few spare bits of sprue to see how it turns out, but that's roughly how I'd go about trying to replicate it.

What kind of paint would you suggest for Green + Silver? Base, Layer or Contrast?

Got Caliban Green, but that's a bit too dark
Got Moot Green, but that's far too bright
Got Warp Lightning, which might work when mixed/added to silver

And I got no shortage of silver or silver-ish metallics.

if you want to achieve these effects with a single paint you should look into pearlescent paints

I'd try maybe Castellan Green with something bright like Runefang Steel. Even Caliban Green might look good if you mix with a very bright/light silver. It actually does have a very Christmas Beetle like colour when painted over a white primer. This is how Caliban looked on a little terrain piece I did with white primer. It'd show even brighter with a light metallic. But the goal for that layer is mainly for a hint of green tint/shade to come through the orange metallic layers so it doesn't have to be super bright.

But yeah for weird stuff like that, I'd just mess around with a few different mixes on my palette to see how they turn out on some test plastic, and decide which looks closest to the effect I wanna replicate. Or as Jerk 0 matic advised above, you can just get a pearlescent specialty paint as the easy way to do it.

If you're after this sort of green shade, since some Christmas beetles have that look, then Elysian Green is perfect.

For instance if I wanted to do this beetle, I'd start with the orange metallic below, build up a metallic green on top with something like Warboss Green maybe, then Elysian green as the top metallic layer. You can almost see how the natural beetle has these layers already with a hint of the bottom layer coming through the top ones.

You want to use pearl not silver for colored metallics, silver will wash out the color badly. you also need to make sure its transparent as it will dull the effect if it isnt, an opaque pigment wont magically become transparent by thinning

This is the secret my industry uses for making car paint

“Simple” method is fleshtone, wash, and a lighter fleshtone on top.

Theres also blending where you slowly build up color to get more natural looking skin

it's a mix out of colors...

I first had primed the mini with grey seer.
After that i applied a layer of blood angels contrast
Then i used for the brighter part mepthiston red
the edge highlights on the mephiston red is a pink tone
darker spots are made with a layer of khorne red.
I managed to get a "neutral" area that still is in blood angels contrast....

Also i used different metal and gold tones to get the full effect on the mini.

The point is you generate much less torque than a powered drill, so less chance of accidentally tearing your models apart. Though as a T'au main I always caution people to drill the holes they need before gluing parts to each other, since I once accidentally spun the engine pod off a crisis suit with the torque of drilling a hole for weapon mount magnets, and it was a real pain to glue it back into place after losing the peg that snapped off it.

I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to accidentally rip an arm off while drilling weapon barrels too. All you need is for the bit to catch something, and the leverage of being at the end of a long piece would do the rest

if you want the highest end you can get without spending a fortune, high solid gel medium with brown pigment(or paint)

you can cheap out here and there though, but gel medium will give you better adhesion than pure PVA glue and better durability

afaik it's been updated at least once, sometime around 2010 I'd guess. I have an old one that I bought around 2008, but it might've been old stock.
The lascannons and other sponson weapons were tweaked too at that point.
