If I had to suggest one to a new player Tyranids hands down

Almost all of their models are brand new and look really good, there's a bunch of cheap stuff around rn bc of combo boxes, they're easy to paint and look good in any colour

Admech are a notoriously difficult army to paint, every model is highly detailed, has metals, skin, lights and cloth to paint and you need a bunch of models compared to other factions so they're a bigger investment

Eldar is a really old army and a lot of their models are really old and don't look as good and will likely get updated at an undisclosed time in the next 8 or so years so they're probably better as a second army

Eldar are just about to get quite a few updates, they were recently previewed

I run them with the exaction squad too. My best advice is know what your operative options do, and plan accordingly. They're also pretty strat heavy, so don't be afraid to use lots of them.

First mini done, had a warhammer paint starter kit and only base points and nuln oil for a shade.

Had real fun with it, hope to get better in future, guy at games workshop was very kind and patient with me to teach me the basics before I went home and tried this

for reference it was Stegadon w/ a streak of incubi in the deepest parts. then I gave the creases and all the holes a quick splash of Drakenhof

then sotek green drybrushing and a final line of temple guard blue

so incubi and stegadon were great choices

originally did the cloak incubi but that would have left stegadon for the armour and it'd be too bright, not quite dark and moody enough

incubi is an excellent off-black colour, juuuuuust the right amount of stormy-ocean colour in it to sell the idea

runelord brass was an excellent trim choice too, not too bright

and drakenhof on that worked really well too

Based black, glazed purple to give it a hue of colour then very thinly applied red in a crescent moon shape repeating for highlight. Then a tiny white dot or 2 opposite to reflect light and a gloss varnish

with basic tools id say dry brushing will get you close to whats in the picture

The first line has no water at all, se show it clogs up the cracks in your skin and just kinda blobs up?

The 2nd line is a roughly 1:1 mix of water and paint, if your paint is thinned correctly you should be able to see the cracks in your skin but not your skintone

The 3rd line is a 2:1 mix of paint to water, you can still see your skintone through it

Awful for a base coat

But perfect for glazing

Some paints like vallejo air or citadel air come prethinned for airbrushes right out of the bottle

But the bottom line is don't get discouraged

A wise man once told me "you're gonna suck, you're gonna suck for a long time, then one day you won't even realize you don't suck anymore"

You do need to consider that runny glue can mess up the paint

If you are doing it before assembly

You might need into smaller hobby brushes for small spaces

Personally, I paint it post assembly. Some areas are just too enclosed for paint brushes, but my rule is that if I can't reach my smallest paintbrush into a spot and paint it without getting paint on multiple surfaces, then I doubt anyone was going to look in that spot close enough to notice

I just remind myself that I'm going to be looking closer at my models than just about anyone else, and that just because I know a crevice is unpainted doesn't mean others will

I think what i may do next time is paint it like the box art with the purple tinge, i think the recipie is 1:1:1:1 Cadian fleshtone,Ushabti bone,slaanesh grey and white, then wash with druchi violet, then highlight with slaanesh grey but as a final step ill mix caroburg crimson with lahmian medium and wash the skin to give it a red tint

Still too heavy of a tiny strength. All black pigments other than bone(ivory) black are very hard to mix

It's actually why most master canvas painters tell new painters to never use black

Btw, is lahmian medium supposed to dry similar to what GW paints have as their finish? Mine dries super glossy and im curious if thats normal.

Terrible pic but i took lahmian medium and mixed it in with some paint to see what would happen and then it dried like this. I cant tell if theyve changed their recipe or if mine is defective but that is not satin lol. An old vid on their youtube about the medium show how you can use it and their finish is closer to matt than satin. Mine is nearly the same as when you dont shake a wash but in this case, i shook my medium for a while and still got this.

A squad of something he doesnt have + a character would be pretty good but it could be like 70-90 bucks and not everyone has that in their budget.

If he doesn't have them yet, a Scout Squad can be used in pretty much every Space Marine army (the only they cant be used in is Deathwatch). They are fun on the tabletop and they can be lead by a Captain in Phobos Armor who is a neat looking character that someone could paint up and feel attached too because he was a gift.

The captain can also be attached to like 5+ different things so hes not JUST for the scouts.
