do not shoot the marine
3+ save ignore piercing hes probably gonna live
Nice
Ewoks or Jawas?
The former are teddy bears, the latter are the guys going around Tatooine in sand crawlers
Lets start to build the base decorations...
Ah I see, you’ve taken the true son of Dorn approach, those better be real bricks
this is modeling clay
Diet bricks then
will be fine when done ^^
If you don’t support them with proper foundations I will tell Dorn
Those will be ruins of a medival styled housing of someone... My redemptor dread will stand in the middle of those ruins, defending the imperium in his eternal duty...
The Templars must not forget where they come from, fortifying positions is in their blood
thats why the redemptor stand in this ruins... once the planet is secure again this sacred ground will be fortified
The best offence, is a good defence and all that
But i'm still happy that i'm able to mould my own base decorations...
so i can ensure that the base will look like i want to
All memes aside, those bricks are looking good
Trying to do my best ^^
adding muscle texture to the underside
blend and glaze over layering
All done!
Already onto the next project
I'm painting them as khornegors
Except the shaman who is getting white fur because yknow...warptouch
Jawas mb
Hot DAMN do I love those axes
Teseract glow and waystone green works wonders together
I think I have waystone green
Do you use anything underneath those, or is it just plastic/whatever primer/base ye use followed by those two?
Closest I managed to a proper glow was this guy, using a base of metallic silver, followed by Warp Lightning and painting over that with Tesseract Glow
My glow process is painting over the area with a white base over whatever primer I got (most important step it makes glow 100x better)
Then add tesseract glow on top of the white
Then the tricky part is with the waystone green, u wanna do it in different layers, starting with the lighter areas then adding more on the areas u want it to be darker
I can post like a step by step later when I get the chance if u want
Might be helpful. Otherwise, got the basics - white, tesseract, then waystone
Wonder how to pull off Plasma glow with it
Gue'vesa I did
He's getting the soul sucked right out of him in the warpstorm
That's what you look like when you turn your back on the emporer
Progress on my test models
Thin_your_paints.mp4
Whar
Thin your paint and draw a line on your hand
If it obscures the cracks on your skin it's too thick
If you can see your skintone through the paint its too thin, but can be good for glazes
If you can't see your skintone but can still see the cracks in your skin through the paint, it's perfect for a base coat
A good baseline is 1:1 for base coats but eventually you'll know by feel
Take some time and practice it
It's a fundamental skill
Yes
You can still see the detail in your skin but not your skin tone
Meaning the paint is thin enough to be opaque while not obscure detail on the model
Flayed skin (and skin in general) has a lot more desaturated green involved than you'd expect, little washes of blue/green/yellow will help sell a sort of bruised look if you're going for less of a leathery vibe for the lighter sections
Yo are the blades cast resin? looks really cool
Nah just paint n gw plastic, I do however have a printed skorpekh lord I plan on working on
did you varnish the blade with some kind of gloss
How'd you get the green to pop so hard? I legit thought it was just transparent resin dyed green
This is a rough explanation of what I did, ima post a lil thing here later of my steps with pics
No gloss but the waystone green has a very glossy look where it has a lot of layers
just an FYI, tesseract glow contains a fluo pigment which means if you keep it in light it will fade or darken within a week. Just something to keep in mind when storing them
I got all my minis in a box safe from the scary outside world thankfully
I painted up my first mini. Anyone git tips on making the base look less like sand and more like dry earth?
It kinda sounds like you shouldve used one of those cracking paints
Idek what that is lol
Want to make it look like your model is standing on cracked ground? Find out how to give your bases that parched earth appearance with today's painting video.
Head over to the Citadel Colour website to see more painting tutorials: http://bit.ly/2YotsTh
Don't forget to like, share and subscribe and to ring the bell to make sure you keep up to ...
paint it brown
First fellgor done
Trying to get the red panels to pop a bit more. I’m thinking maybe a red orange highlight?
Im pretty sure this is the case, but when a paint comes out more glossy than normal, is the primary culprit the fact that you just didnt shake it enough?
You can put actual cracks in whatever you used to make the dirt, looks like exterior filler to me, using like a hobby knife gently, but it looks very creamy so it'd be easier for it to be sand, snow, or mud
Also another question, does paint re*arder leave behind any significant residue after drying or does it just fully evaporate? Thinking about mixing it into my paint water but a bit scared it will damage my brushes.
Typhus, Herald of the Plague God
Very enjoyable sculpt to paint for an older metal kit
Appreciate it! The plinth is from the amazing Il Basetta
Hell yea been following this for ever
Happy to oblidge, it did take for ever too
Now you gotta do the newer typhus with the same paint job
sort of yeah sometimes you can have shaken it enough but it'll come out glossy because temprature or moisture effected it
I wouldnt put it into the wash water, it really wont do anything if its in there unless you mean the water youre using to thin down paints, then no it wont damage the brush anymore than normal acrylics do
Good stuff!
Any blood angels armies?
2nd fellgor done
Working on some arbites glamour shots
With some baneblade rounds in view
I have some more pics to take, but I'm going for a sorta photo setup with their gear fullscale. Some 9mm rounds (yes I know they have shotpistols but 9s are the stereotypical cop round), a patch version of the logo I painted on their shoulders (pic related), and an extendable baton w/ holster that looks like the exact one on the models.
Redemptor dread done... @rare hornet i hope Dorn would be pleased...
I can confirm that Dorn is viewing this with his usual blank and unemotional stare... I think that's a good thing?
Aye.
Do chalky/whiteish paints dry a lot faster than other paints or am i imagining it?
the citadel paints?
Yeah, they are the ones im having issues with
yeah citadel white sucks
Squad goals, 2 more to go.
Tell me if this rust pattern makes sense, I'm going to put rust paint along the rim and on the underside of the chaos station but along the brass divets I'm going to highlight because I feel like since he's constantly hitting that gong no rust would form
you arent. Paints dry via exothermic reaction and some pigments can delay or speed up that process
which demon did you sell your soul to for it to look this good
Wyp Salemanders
Ohh you flatter me!!! I’m really not that good
And there’s plenty on the model that could be improved on
The lantern could do some work
Very clean!!
Make sure you smooth back down the boltgun barrel though
Thanks! Totally forgot about the barrel, thanks for the hint
How’ve you got such smooth coats on this boy then
Especially the Metallics on the gun
Soooo crisp and clean, very nice work
Painted the model with grey primer, used a dry brush with white for highlights, than painted most of it with Army Painter Speed paints, they leave nice smooth coats
oh no i lost my head to my occult term after priming 😭 it flew off the clip somewhere
How would I paint purple with only the purple paints i have on hand? I don't wanna buy others
I only have Phoenician purple, genestealer purple and kakophoni purple
Add red or blue
More correct, add magenta or blue
..explain lol
Not the best pictures but my phone was about to die
Y'all I'm writing up some homebrew datasheets for thousand sons bc I'm sick of us only having one list
Gonna start by importing some stuff from CSM that feels appropriate
Do y'all reckon Dark Commune+ accursed cultists is balanced as-is? Was gonna basically import them into ksons and swap Dark Pacts for them having Cabal 2 bc there's 2 non-lobotomized pysker characters in the unit that could hypothetically provide points
Was thinking of maybe trying to get a lil wild with it and making it so you can try to roll to turn one of the torments into a chaos spawn but I feel like there's a good chance that's just outright busted
Also wanting to make Melee Rubrics + a Melee Character based on Sanahkt to lead them, some sort of Rubric disc sniper character and a sort of 3 man psyker artillery squad but I feel like I'm better off trying to get the models made before I try and write rules
I also kinda wanna make like a daemon summoner detachment where you're allowed to have up to 50% of your list in daemons instead of 25% and have it buff daemons, tzaangors and infernal masters just purely to try and make a strong ksons list that encourages you to use different models but I'm not sure how confident I am balancing something in completely uncharted territory like that
My volumetrics are improving 🙂
Painting is still a work in progress but I have completely built my first 1k army list.
He's all done!
I know it's supposed to look like he just slashed someone
but for some reason, my first thought was that he just did a wicked baseball shot
I mean look at those veins. Bro is ready to play
the less popular alternative to Bloodbowl
Bloodbat
although some matches end up with the same amount of violence
dude, LED's in the knight. actual S tier
Thanks! It was a serious pain, BUT.. Im happy with how it turned out.
Oh hey, the Astartes from Astartes
From my local store.
Shes finally done
WiP
Just finished up this Black Templar Chaplain conversion (just a quick cheeky head swap)!
Hell yeah!!
I like the little punches of color here and there
I saw the Box art ones and they just looked boring and flat
Like this just looks like nothing
It all blends into itself
lol, reference from that
Emps Champ wip...
Such a good model, especially for kitbashing ;3
I will keep it original here...
Thanks... Trying to do my best ^^
I kitbashed him into my custom chaptermaster
I use him for my own Black Templars crusade so he will fit as regular epic hero
So that i can switch between Bayards Revenge mini & this mini... i like to have optical options
I already got one for my templars
Understandable that you then use it as kitbash mini
Also I found that you can give him a cape
Noice
This doesn't seem too busted right?
Was trying to make a pseudo equivalent for Havocs for Ksons
Like a heavy weapons/artillery squad but more wizard flavoured
it has a lot of rules
Trying to sell the idea of each weapon being a magical artifact from each chaos god and you're encouraged to build the full squad with the same loadout and use them as specialised damage dealers
Yeah I went nuts trying to sell the flavour on the artifacts
idk I feel like ksons works better if it has loaded datasheets and is just point costed appropriately yknow
3 models
deep strike with a marine killer flamer or flying character sniper unit that will kill any leader from pretty much any unit or two flavours of easy chaff clearers. Top it off with a very potent defence
this seems knight levels of power
Telekine Shield would be fine if it were like a 3" aura from the location you placed it from so you'd have to stay put to utilize it
Yeah deep strike definitely seemed like a bit much I just wanted to help sell the idea of like "flamer equivalent is there so you can try to kill big stuff but you need to gap close" and I wasn't sure they'd be able to gap close
Like the idea was supposed to be wands are anti-chaffe machine gun, staff was your sorta allrounder that helps you not get ruined in melee as easily, flames were the highest damage output range super range limited and orb is a sniper rifle
this seems a bit too powerful even for a single character unit
they are nice ideas though
but wouldn't want to play against it
did I make it clear enough that you don't have all of the weapon profiles at once?
yeah
Yeah I might scrub the wargear abilities and see how it ends up feeling from there
That might even out it a bit
I'd probably drop the invul too if you keep the shield
+4 is very very good especially for such many wounds
Oh yeah true that was an oversight from the card I converted it from, fairly sure I took the exalted sorcerer and used that datasheet as a baselines for stats
Ah
So would this make good ruined industrial walls? Also the back side is kinda bad and I don’t really know how to fix it/work with it
Practice, practice, practice, practice
Rock and stone!
Rock and stone brother
Question:
Which primer would be best to use for Orks? Green or Black?
What color armor are you doing?
They're Kommando Orks, so prolly a black Armor
Thanks homes! I unfortunately don't have a dry brush, but I'll figure something out
I keep asking myself why I'm not buying any guardsmen to finish my gue'vesa squad only to then remember that it's 40 fucking dollars for 5 minis
It was 35 for a 10 pack back in 2017
Wip update...
So when do I put transfers on? At the very end of the painting process? Before topcoat?
after top coat because you put another one over it after
Oh okay, so topcoat>gloss varnish over the decal spot then another coat?
What spray varnish do you use?
What topcoat do you use? Krylon?
Siiiick!! I like it!
How would you paint maggots?
I use KBS
Had a busy day with the wife today but still had to make sure I Got my hour of painting done
Is the beastman kill team still buy able? Can't seem to find ot
you might be able to find some from 3rd party retailers
but id expect them to return with the reboxing theyve been doing
Yeah
Wernt they out like a year?
Thanks I'll have a look
I'm just happy my local nerd store has the 1st edition starter kit for kill team
With actually plastic terrain instead of the cardboard looking stuff they have now
which teams are in that one
thatd be 2nd edition then
Whated the first one have? Am curious
Wait had a look. Ah first born vs tau I think
Tbh I really realised kill team was a thing when the trailer for 2nd came out
Got a bunch of spraying done before the winter weather kicked in
You sprayed them sprue-grey? 😆
Lookin' solid! Have you seen my Emps Champ wip?
Ye I have, that sword looking spicy
Thanks! Will post the finished mini when i have done the remaining shoulder pad and base decoration... Still thinking if i should use some pigments on the mini or not...
Look forward to seeing it maybe hold off on the pigments? He is a dark model already, you might risk making him darker?
Having some sandish/light brown pigments for immitating fine dust...
oh that might work on the legs
yup... but still a bit concerned that i might f*** this up cuz' i haven't really worked with pigments yet
I've never used pigments
Only once on a Chappy mini... looked good there but the spots i used the pigments were much easier to reach then on emps champ...
WIP infernal master proxy
First time I've bothered painting in weeks I think I need to go on meds or smth
@rare hornet Einar Sigurdin has joined the Sabena Crusade...
Yeeeeeees
I think i did a good job 🙈
I like the gold lettering you got going on,
Actually the letters in the sword are yellow 😄
Well, close enough
But i'm just pretty happy that even the pigment stuff worked out with some help of a YT tutorial
Only thing I would maybe add is you have the pigments quite high on his right leg, maybe worth considering having the pigments the same height all around his legs?
not really... i like to have some "wind effect" by having those pigments...
Fair enough
it's a desert themed base so it fits in my eyes
I wanted a beakie helmet for my raven guard kill team and after 3 hours of searching
Not only did I find one
i found TWO of them
Or Hell Divers reminds you of 40K 👀 but yes thanks appreesh!
Hive Fleet Jormungandr scheme nice. Nids of those hive fleet are decorating some of my BT mini Bases....
It was a tie between Jormungandr or Gorgon but I'm sure I'll paint more greensih schemes in the future
Yellow is pain to paint 😄
I have more issues with red and white than yellow and greens lol
Tbh i have no problems with red since i use slapchop technique on red 😄
Ah yes, someone who enjoys painting and doesn't want to get bogged down by over-perfectionism
Spoilered for nudity,
Put about half an hour into these horns, managed to built up quite the neat texture to them quite quickly
That is some bomb ass painting. Amazing job.
Thanks a lot!! ❤️🔥
Working on Imperial Fists
The edge weathering is really well done
The beginning of my DA Army
Dorn is pleased.
is this a GW model
Wanted to share some bases I’m working on, not letting me tho
You must lose your grey goblin role, it will happen in a short amount of time
I'm not sure if it's purely time based or post based as well either way it's mostly just a bot/low effort troll countermeasure
Baal Red contrast paint
That shit is magic, its contrast effect isn't fantastic but the coverage is ridiculously good
I don't think I've ever had to use more than one layer
Wasn't the Green is was trying to go for, but it's a Green I actually kinda dig
I like it. I’m also building Kommandos
Niiice! What klan pain scheme you thinking?
So i was gifted a Boss Snikrot model. I am building his Red Skull Kommandos, and giving them a jungle vibe since they live in the jungles of Armageddon.
I’m kinda going all in with basing them from scratch, nameplates on the bases, and writing little short stories of how they came into Boss Snikrots command. I named this Nob pictured, “GAZOB GOR” 🤓
I’d drop in a photo but not granted permissions yet… <@&735928989146939404> ?
gotta talk more in chat to get the role that lets you post pics
(as I said that his name changed)
(I am but a fool)
best way to do it, i think!
Those bases are looking fresh
Painting my traitor guard and I feel like I'm just gonna get them table ready, besides the ogryn these are gonna be pretty boring to paint
Been a while since I've painted actively but now that I've got the Convict role, I'll share some of my old stuff in here every once in a while (don't want to spam the channel with everything at once)
1905th Solar Auxilia Ogryn Charonite
No 😄
It's by MindworkGames and it's based on artwork by BROM
Yep. I am in pain
I want them so baaaaad, but I’m not paying £80 for three 40 point models
I finished my repex and here's some photos
Thanks brother
Dorn is also proud
Leman Russ has been released!!!
It's so tiny and cute! Available in 'EPIC' and 'tabletop' scale.
Get it here for free:
https://makerworld.com/en/models/781489#profileId-718638
this is MIGHTY well done
Tell me about it!!! Lmao
I have over 6k points in resin Solar Auxilia, I don't even like to think about the total cost...
Thank you very much!
God DAMN
Progress it being made
looking good, nice progress!
Today my Votann will face Blood Angels in a 1k match...
Since the Index got some quite nice updates in october, i think they will do some severe damage to those Blood Angels
I've been struggling with getting back to painting but this is my most recent
What the fuck thats so perfectly painted IM SO JEALOUS
Hrrrrmmmmmm I think the word bearers are getting their own faction
Planning to fill in the gaps in between those parts with liquid green stuff
It was frustrating trying to piece them together
Redid pretty much all of her skin, a lot better now but still lots to fix. Spoilered for nudity
Don't talk to me or my sons ever again!
I just love the 0.2 nozzle. Who knew FDM could be so detailed??
did you just scale down the model? i see some features that have changed proportions but the tracks are 1:1
Just scaled down.
There are 2 body options, and 6 (I think) cannon options.
Everything else is either due to lighting or the angle of the shot.
ha i never imagined just scaling alone would translate well to epic. that's pretty cool
It makes no sense to me that new space marine boxes have raptor decals included but no actual raven guard ones
Fist looks kinda "unfinished"... i would recommend to dirty down the fist with agrax earthshade and edge highlight afterwards with a brighter yellow/white... also i would recommend to strengthen the recess shading with some nuln oil afterwards
@mint dove did this with my Einhyr Champion like you can see and i think it looks pretty good
Make it hazard striped
(WiP) thoughts on the brown trousers? I'm not sure if I like them over just having them be a blue similar to his greatcoat, also I have no idea how I should paint his rifle, suggestions?
Maybe they are planning on doing something with raptors soon?
Idk im not complaining I have a joint force of ultramarines and raptors
Ive never painted hazard stripes on something that big how would you reccomend going about it correctly so it looks like hazard striping and not "Bumblebee fist"
Oh yeah this is just step 1, not all the base coats are down yet
The trick is not to do them perfectly horizontal or vertical, have them diagonal
The back of his hand is probably the best part to do first and see if any other parts even need it
Meaning like this
Ohhhh
I see why it looked wrong
What I'll probably do is go back and paint the whole fist averland sunset, then sponge some chipping onto the finger and knuckle parts like the paint has chipped off then do hazard stripes on the back of the hand
Thunderer/Destroyer, Macharius and even more Leman Russ variant have been released!
I just can't get enough of these teeny tiny tanks!!!
https://makerworld.com/en/@lordwaffles
Emperor help me when I actually decide to paint them.
Technically not 40K minis but I wanted to show off on my rat scientist 😊
Question about using inks to color clear resin for something like a water effect, do you actually need an ink or can you dilute a hobby paint for a similar effect?
1.5 more hours on the skin
i can see where you're putting the most attention

The teeth
jokes aside how the fuck did you paint the cloth so velvety red
It's basically a single coat of kimera The Red and red ink mixed in
Bri'ish
Vamp'ire
such a good paint
what red ink?
there are like tons of red inks
This was fun, 4 more to go.
Amsterdam Carmine
Thoughts on my plague ogryn so far?
Needs more fecal matter
That will certainly come, I have typhus corossion and nurgles rot for a reason
Done
Ah yes, the 15 foot tall doors every house has
Current progress on my contekar team.
By the way, when you layer, do you first palace the lights and then blend later or do you slowly build up with mixes?
Depends but I find it a bit easier to start with higher contrast and highlights to the appropriate areas before working on the little details
Progress is a little slow, but we getting there
pic 3 looks like a hooded amogus
He is the imposter
Sneaking these in here
JORMUNGANDR!!!!!!!!!!!!! LETS GO SOMEONE ELSE PAINTING THIS FLEET
very heretical
Improvements on the hair and started to work on the jewellery. Quite happy how this is turning out thus far

do I put his wings on before priming/painting
@rare hornet hey bestie its question time :3
Hello, what’s the question?
It came to me in a dream, I had to build it.
nvm I answered it myself x3
The Command Sentinel
I was debating glueing morty's wings on before painting
Oki, fair enough, I’d personally suggest not gluing, but to be fair I’ve never painted him so honestly not sure the best option
I don't exactly have the best things to use to hold onto them
Ah okay, that makes sense
What's a good ratio of paint to glaze medium/water for glazing? Vallejo reccomeds 1:1 paint to medium but that still leaves it realitively thick
I don't really measure, I just thin it until it 'seems' right. Testing on skin or paper before applying to the model helpst a lot
Do you use water and medium? Or just one or the other?
Just water mostly, a few rare instances of medium but haven't tried both at the same time
Okay I think that may be my issue, I'm under thinning it with medium so it comes out kinda gloopy
I'm gonna try to glaze some highlights on this one
I don't think water + medium would cause any trouble though. Medium will just keep the consistency of the paint somewhat similar where ass water just .. waters it down. I lack the terminology and theory of it but that's just how I've experienced it
Guess it also depends on the medium
Alrighty ill give it a go, while I'm trying to learn the right consistency what would be a good baseline? Something like 3:1 water to paint? Then tweak it from there?
One reoccurring issue I see with people learning glazing is that they have way too much of the paint on the brush when applying it to the model this causing pooling and such, you ought to have very little paint left on the brush when going for glazing
Yeah I did see the most important step is to tap your brush against a paper towel until the tide of water stops flowimg out
For example, you can just stretch out a section of paint on the pallete and thin it gradually the further you go from base
...I learned that after my first attempt when I touched the brush to the model and drowned it lol
I'll give it a go and show you tonight lol
Sure, I'm heading to sleep now though so I'll catch that in the morning
Glazed medium does not change the consistency of paint. It just extends it so you get less pigmentation
I see, so despite the name i shouldn't use it for glazing?
no you should as it does help. What hobby painters know as glazing isnt actually really glazing persay, its a velatura and its kind of confusing, even more so when you google glazing and follow instructions from paint companies on this stuff
Yeah like vallejo says on their website to glaze, mix their paint 1:1 with glaze medium
@sick ledge yeeeeah i think I'm gonna stick to layering
I'm awful at glazing unfortunately
you just need practice, you can get it right eventually.
yep, you;re looking for the delayed dry not the thinness
the delayed dry will make it smooth
Y'all trying to clarify a rule here
If I'm using Kairos/LoC in a thousand sons list, I know I don't get the daemon army rule as part of my army, but do I still get the army rule as part of his aura ability?
My friend says that aura abilities like that exist independent to the army rule in cases like this and that I'd have the daemons rule but only as a bubble around Kairos
I can't see the bit of the rules that's supposed to clarify this tho
I've been using a unit of horrors + Kairos to deep strike into backline and cause problems and we aren't sure if the healing from the army rule would be applied or not because we don't get the rule: but it is written onto his datasheet
shit people will never see
Very nice edge highlighting
Just working on gold trimming the relevant details, touching up any areas that i spilled into with black then hitting it with my necron steel combo of leadbelcher, drakhenoff nightshade wash and a runefang steel drybrush on the pillars
Also going to finish the ctan spirit in an orangey yellow combo to make usage of opposite colours to the blue im using
Then the painstaking effort of getting the little figures into position and glued in
Either that or im going to magnetise them
this model visualizes how I feel after a white monster energy
The shard itself?
that seems like the better interpretation over being a floating pillar
I just saw it
Played my first match with Kommandos yesterday
damn you got me
Some work on the cape

yo chat
lemme get some advice
should I
one finish paint my purple orks
or start back working on my DGs?
Finished after 39 hours of painting
DG because I dont know how you'd beable to see a purple ork
Finally dialed in a flesh tearers scheme I'm proud of
Wip solar auxiliary next thing to add is lighting on his armor any good advice
Captian turning out well
That guardsman will see it, he will know
Hehe, it's strange because I've used more different colours on this guy than the space marines.
dudes def vibrant af
very cool edging
Gonna convince my brother to get me the Retaliation Cadre for Christmas
‘Politely’ request, with force if you must
Changed my mind lol I’ve seen the sizes of the lads and I’m less tempted now
I mean, fair. Battlesuits are comically large at points
WIP
Body No.2
nice
my first guy
More wip
Ooo nice AC minis
The big stinky
Helmet goes hard
how you gonna base it tho?
Forgot to share the entire squad pic the other day!
Also, in case you're wondering just how big the Ogryn Charonite are (they are freaking huge) here's a scale image I took a long time ago
They could literally tackle a Sentinel lol
I am so jealous of how well you paint skin tone, really impressive. 🤩
I need to build mine
its much easier if you mix your own skin tone colors
doing out the pot colors for flesh makes it much harder to get creamy blends weirdly enough
I tend to on a wet palette but skin, especially shading on it like Jerk is doing, is a major Achilles heel in painting for me.
yeah this is especially true with the GW paint line, if you just try to use them raw there's way too much weird color blending
the trick to skin shading is to ignore all mini painter advice and learn from canvas painters. The color you want for shading is violet
violet will do the same thing as blue but not make it look like a five'o clock shadow
damn, I really like this suggestion, thank you! I'll keep it in mind in the future
If you can get it, ultramarine violet is a really wonderful shade paint for skin. Its low tint strength and metameric so it enhances natural light and shadows a lot without overwhelming the skin tone
it will look shaded too but a more delicate shaded instead of harsh. I have something here shaded with it
if I can find it I'll post a picture
awesome, thanks! That would be great!
oh that's nice, it adds a really subtle shading to it!
not a great example but its right in front of me
I get what you're saying though, I'll keep it in mind in the future! I really appreciate the tip
No problem 🙂
Stage two…..
Putting the finishing touches on my captain
pretty simple, some agrax badland, the paint over and some gloss for mud effect
Thank you kindly!
i'd be genuinely surprised if you don't sell your models afterwards. that shit's professional
Thanks 😄
afraid not though. I've only done one piece as a commission but the rest are for my shelves
its generally not worth it to sell the peices after. Very few people can afford them is they costed the price they should, which would be around $15,000 (assuming the hourly is $30 USD)
I am. I make $150/h
but yeah most artists arent
hence why i donate most of my money to artists who are struggling
miniature painting/bust painting is a niche within a niche so it's doubly difficult to be noticed as an artist and find people willing to pay decently for it
They also grossly undervalue themselves a lot
Very few people can be a fulltime commission artist for this hobby and even then its all about speed and not about quality
Posting this here too: come join the imperial agents server if you want to play inquisition or rogue traders! It’s a good community and they’ve managed to make agents work competitively.
When shouldn't I spray clear coat weather wise?
It'll be about 60 degrees when I get home tomorrow and then it's gonna rain thursday-thursday
If I warm up the can before I spray should I be fine?
avoid rain and humid weather
temperature doesn't affect it that much if the can is warm
(don't do it by fire, hot tap water. You probably know that but just making sure)
Ahh beans I was gonna have roasted clear coat for dinner
Thanks alot jerk. My dinner party is RUINED

So i tried using decals
I put on gloss varnish
Microset and a few layers of microsol and it's still crinkling like this, how do I fix it?
keep going over it with microsol
let it dry between passes
use a q-tip and softly apply some pressure to squeeze it flat
The main problem I'm having is when I put the decal on the part it doesn't sit even close to flat
Like entire sides of the decal are sticking up and I have to poke and prod at it which leads to these awful wrinkles
doesn't matter, it'll flatten out when the microsol softens it up
Okay so if I place the decal on the part and it's not even close to flat just let it dry and come back with microsol until it is?
How long does it usually take to dry
yeah
depends on the decal shape and surface but usually like 4 or 6 passes is enough
just let it dry first
Sometimes, applying a waterslide transfer or decal isn't as simple as just smoothing it out across a flat surface. One of the most common areas you might encounter are Space Marine pauldrons, but even on irregular surfaces like tank turrets and banners you'll find it can be difficult to get the transfer to sit flush. Not any more! READ MORE:

Maybe I wasn't letting it dry long enough i was putting coats on under 5 minutes from the last
I need to work on my patience
Yeah, the clip I linked explains it pretty well iirc. I remember watching this when it came out and used it as a basis of my own knowledge
I love sonic sledgehammer, he explains everything in a way that i absorb nicely
Also he only uses 1 paint brand for his tutorials which I find very handy
I hate when I'm following a tutorial and they have vallejo,ak,scale 75 etc on the same model lol
Sometimes I just use microsol only, and I rarely gloss when applying decals though gloss helps reinforce the surface and allow the decals transfer easily.
Microset lets you remove the transfer though if you stick it in the wrong place after drying it out iirc?
or water should be fine too idk
@brisk vapor thanks for the advice!
Thersz still 1 or 2 minor little wrinkles but with the "3 foot rule" it looks perfect
Hell yeah
I simply can't stop designing and printing these tanks!
Any idea/tips on how to easily paint EPIC scale tanks?
All for free, right here: https://makerworld.com/en/@lordwaffles
These are quite cool yeah
I think the tiny Crassus is adorable
here's a couple I painted when the Legions Imperialis dropped, ask away if you've got anything specific to ask
my first ever painted mini
But just to make sure I get it better next time the steps are 1. Gloss varnish 2. Layer of microset and set the decal 3. Soak a tip I'm microset and roll it on 4. Once the microset dries take some tissue and gently press into the decal 5. Brush on microsol and then roll a wet qtip over the decal between applications to flatten it more
Am I missing anything?
In this video Henry takes you through how he has painted up his Solar Auxiliary army for the new Legions Imperialis game!

Alright thanks! And how long should I usually let each application of microsol dry?
never really measured, I just went with touch feel and visuals. When it looked and felt dry I did another pass
Will do, it's nice to know no matter how good I get there's still so much to learn with this hobby
There is only a lot if you choose it to be that much to be fair
you're actually trying to get good so it seems like a lot
I painted smth
Tank progress
what's up with that demolisher's turret
also based armageddon pattern basilisk
Hey guys for recess shading should I use normal black or a shade paint? I found if I use shade paint I get horrible spilling issues on my miniature that I spend an hour cleaning up. So I'm thinking of maybe trying the next one with normal black for recessshading
I often start with the shaded areas so I don't have to go back to just for that reason, i.e. black or dark base paint and work myself up from that
Spent the evening fixing airbrush malfunction splotches but almost done now. Now I just need to buy a hand drill to get this attached to the plinth I have for her 😅
Oh yeah, made it look like the KV2 tank turret. I loved the derp cannon from playing WoT so I just had to make it.
But it's all modular, you can freely swap turrets, cannons and tracks between just about any tank.
I even made a Chimera that can hold 3 turrets. Because, more DAKKA more better?
And soon I will know EVERYTHING
Forgot to ask, I see that some people cut certain decals (like the inverted omega for UM) is there any way I can cut these to make them lay better? Or is this as good as I'm gonna get since they're basically jagged circles
One (1) rat.
Red isnt a primary color
I quit
Blue isnt a primary color
THEN WHAT THE FUCK ARE PRIMARY COLORS
Cyan, Magenta, and yellow
any day you are free I will give you another color theory lesson and you know how intense those are
"how the fuck did you mix a neon purple out of a dark green????"
light wavelengths my dude, light wavelengths
i didn't paint this shit but i modelled this and it's kinda 40k
i'll spend 4 weeks straight modelling a prop gun but the moment i grab a paint brush i fall asleep
WiPs
I see two points to love about this model.
Yeah can't really cut those
Okay found 2 issues of why I was having trouble
1 I wasn't letting the microset sit long enough to do it's work, it "looked" dry after 2 minutes but wasn't fully dry til around 10
And 2. I wasn't pressing down with enough pressure when putting on the microsol so it wasn't flattening
Went from this to this in 1 application with both tips
good shit
does anybody here know about painting props
how do i make it so it doesnt instantly get scuffed
varnish?
pretty much I'd recon
we used automotive varnish when I worked on a movie in props
rustoleum to be exact
the more i learn about your background the less i understand
I'm old and bounce around a lot of jobs because of nepotism
lol
I have a very intense backstory that only anime protagonists can match
Did a pretty good job on thr decals but I think I need to thin the gloss varnish a bit more next time
Also I think my new recipie for flesh tearers armor is absolutely perfect
It looks fantastic of course, but I'm curious why you didn't go with a bit of contrasting color for the jewelry?
Thanks!
I was thinking about painting the necklace jewellery blue, based them as such at first but I felt it would've been too separate from the whole. The torso gems were shaped like droplets so I wanted them to represent blood drops. Now the whole thing is basically composed with 6 paints + black in total which I liked doing. I don't think you always have to have complementary colours present even though it is a very safe option to go with.
If something I could have maybe done better with a brunette or ginger hair to keep the palette even more limited
I think, gold could also look nice. Thank you for explaining your thinking 🙂
Gold would be nice actually, didn't really even cross my mind. Not sure if I want to go back and test it anymore though
green would do it i reckon
Btw anyone with warhammer +, are the tutorials actually worth it? Do you think they give some good advice?
They're alright, haven't watched nearly all of them though
the early ones I did were pretty decent at least and as far as I know the latter ones are at least as good or better
not really, you get better ones on youtube
not worth the subscription cost if i can put it that way
Nôkrid Ironfist is now starting to live up to his namesake
Just finished my first ever Boi!
neato, going to do the base as well?
I intend to! I am taking things slow and learning bit by bit
Grenadier looking good?
Knight legs
Yesssss I love Cerastus pattern knights
Current wip
The stinky boy is on the way toward being fully based
wow, that's sick. curious to the result
Wip
what warband is this, yours?
Nahhh wraithbone prime and then another drybrush of wraithbone
Daemonette hide on the purple for the wing spine bits
Lovely use of contrasts BTW!!!
a friends. If I was going to do it it would be black and silver
ah, is there a reason for the teal arm?
valid enough

I know, rare of me to post pictures
See @mint dove I post my work too sometimes
I just cant paint for shit
Krieg refresh looking nice
I havent seen it yet, did they start doing the tanks in plastic?
No tanks
The heresy russ works well for a substitute
If only, my store wont let me do that unfortunately.
Oh what? Boooooo, they're no fun
A leman russ is a leman russ
official stores are either ok or aawful, they are rarely good
those are plastic kits now?
My local store doesnt carry heresy anything because of how small it is
they are getting rid of the tables soon to make room for shelves so I dont have to worry much
Yeah they're all plastic or going plastic except the defender variant
damn... the defender is one of the ones I wanted
I like derp guns
Thankfully I only play meme lists and only play when a friend drags me out so I dont have to care about metas
Annihilator gets the demolisher too
The defender just gets 7 heavy bolters to go with
Yes. those are required for every tank
more guns more better
Yeah that rule for needing the 40k models is no fun
its very lame
I've got a heresy heavy sentinel I'm using for an armoured sent
heresy stuff looks better
Agreed, just looks super cool
If I want to glaze with cadian fleshtone, what should I add to stop it from going chalky? Flow improver or medium?
glaze medium
you're looking to add more gloss technically
you're trying to cover the pigment more to reduce surface scattering of light particles
top is gloss, middle is satin, bottom is matte
Directions unclear fell off a boulder into the ocean and died
I do not have a yellow

i feel quite happy for the eldar players. they finally got some new stuff
yeah thats a common reaction to my classes
Ive had 6 students die from falling out windows
If I didn't point it out could you tell what's wrong with this model
besides the paint on the base? no not really
mold line
Yes I forgot that one but not what I was looking forb
I fucked up on the decal placement
I put it too much to one side
yeah I noticed that but I dont expect perfect placement
I always mess up on thr one where the arms are up or outstretched
But other than that pretty good paint job eh?
its easy to mess up
it is an improvement yes
Getting better every day
Y'all how do Cerastus knights scale against Magnus/Lord of Change?
Wanna see if I can convert a knight Lancer for ksons and rework the lance into a staff using extra bits and add a third arm holding Magnus' Kopesh but I'm not sure if the scale is gonna line up properly
Tbf it wouldn't be the worst thing ever for the Kopesh to be small bc it would read more as a dagger, but yeah I can't find any pics of the two next to each other to try and gauge scale
Here's Magnus next to a knight
That's a Questoris Knight
Cerastus Knights are almost twice as tall
A Questoris goes up to a Cerastus' waist
Cerastus Lancer and a Questoris Knight
I'm working on a Castigator at the moment
He's just a little baby
maybe
Well, what did you expect from the eldar?
very fair
So could you deal with the chalkiness later on by using a varnish or medium over the top?
@dawn streamwell, I did say it was next to 'a' knight 😅 😁 , I also didn't realize a Cerastus was that much taller than a Questoris 😮
Looks like GW needs to make a bigger Magnus
to some extent yes
He may not be Malos, but he'll get the job done.
is that a mace or chainsword
Mace.
bashy boy
I think they can thank Jaghatai for that.
Either him or the Luna Wolves.
i can see te Khan doing it, hes a fast lads after all
Supposedly he made the orks run away because he was killing them so damn fast.
Needed grandae launcher for my guard so I retrofitted one for my loyalist beastman, added more granades and purity seal so everyone knows he's legit
The Mc’ Fist
The Finger of Doom
I feel like i went a bit too far in some places but I'm happy with it
Yes I know there are still mold lines, no I am not fixing them
😦
||I only kid||
mold lines on 40k things are annoying as fuck
I randomly find them after Ive painted things too
lmao I finished the model, saw the mold lines and went "Drez is gonna clown me for this but I ain't fixing them
you called it right
I will clown on you for it
and only you
But at least the paint job around the mold lines is pretty good
Idk why I can’t post mine
need to be a higher level, just chat more and you'll get it quickly
Thankyou
what is the model?
He is done.I had a little incident with the decal, used too much microsol so it started to melt and slide so it's a little warped
hows that happen
Honestly, I like it
Second guy WIP really enjoyed this one so far
These are awesome
Are they vampires lmao
Opened in the store 😭
might as well be haha
anyone here painted any leagues of votann?
Yes, one model
i got the yaegirs killteam set and was curious as to color schemes, a little tough finding info on what to pain them as
there arent that many official schemes, maybe 8 or so iirc
I painted mine with my own scheme
purple with yellow ochre accents
ooo i like that, purple is my fav color and im pretty sure there is a clan with that as primary color
One day when I have all the time in the world I will continue this scheme to a full army that I've bought already
thats beautiful! i love it
much appreciated
im currently painting my first ever army, which is thousand sons that i bought a couple years ago
i probably shouldve started with rubrics instead of termies xD
Question for my fellow army painter wet pallette havers, this might seem like a silly question but do you guys find it... Not working? As in it feels like the paints don't quite last as long as you'd expect
not enough moisture in the palette what kind of papers are you using?
I feel like I might be using too much water, paint tends to kinda... Trail off and off the paper, I use the army painter paper
Changed my mind and went back to the old flesh I used
GW do stuff like that pretty frequently and it's a nightmare getting them to sort it out if you didn't buy direct
I'm still down 2 Tzaangor sprues out of my disciples box and I'm salty as hell about it bc it's a super well known issue to the point where it must be like a quarter of the boxes that were missing half the tzaangor sprues
Yeah, you basically need to drown the army painter ones
Iirc they use a melamine sponge which doesn't absorb water well
He seen stuff
Almost done, gotta finish the purity seal and matte coat the pauldron
Still working on ye olde Knight Castigator
seems like it was
porcelain throne
is the transfer on that shoulder pad handmade or sticker thingy?
its from a decal transfer sheet
has a cool effect that it's damaged a litle

Lord Have Mercy
I wanted my own Blanche like little guy (woman)
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/spritz/spritz-precision-painting-with-every-spray?ref=b3cb1m&gad_source=1 @sick ledge Do you know if this is worth it vs a conventional airbrush?
it doesnt seem like it would be tbh
Its not even some new design, its just a micro version of something I used to paint cars
Do you have a go-to for airbrushes?
Iwata and Harder & Steinbeck
I have multiples of both
Gaahlari is good for a cheapo starter airbrush
their higher end models arent worth it over iwata or H&S
I've heard good things about Iwata
its one of the best brands on the market
Can you skimp on compressors/are they cross compatible?
Does your compressor work with all of your different airbrushes or do you have multiple?
Took a break from flesh tearers
I have 18 compressors and 35 airbrushes now technically but most are industrial ones. My hobby one fits most of them.
Honestly SoT's are probably the easier of the two to paint
I found it way easier to paint trim when the armour panels were bigger
“That man, over there, crease his Jordans*
sick dude!
Does anyone have a good reference for making homebrew kill team cards?
Trying to use battlescribe but it actually sucks so bad and is ugly as sin
You can see you're a beginner, but it looks very good already. For the white parts you can use some oil to create some depth. And for highlights you can go with a dark colour and then lighter and lighter and lighter. That creates a cool effect too
I mean I'm not a total beginner been doing this for a year now, but giving advice is good, rn I'm just testing if I like castellan green on my raptors or if I'm keeping it on death guard, I'm thinking I'm going to use heavy units a dark green where my lighter troops will have the death guard base lol
oh, damn, sorry then.... it just seemed that way.... but hey looks good
my dad plays ultramarines too, cool
Its all good I didn't say that I was just testing it, but everything you gave was great advice! I personally have a joint unit set up between my ultramarines and raptors just cause I like the idea of running two chapters, I know I lose the perk of only running ultramarines but it is what it is
😁 thanks.... i'm just 15 so i'm happy that i can give some advice at all
Hey man everyone starts somewhere! You got all the time to grow and keep on improving! At the end of the day as long as the models you paint make you happy and satisfied then that's all that matters!
Honestly the painting is new too me I did a lot of pen and ink and drawing way back when so learning this has been a steady adventure
i would love to show u the models i paint.... but for some reason i can't send pics here
Hmm I think there is either a perm you need to apply for or you get one after a certain amount of time in the server, i think you need the convicts role but I don't remember how I got it either
okay, well if i can you're the first to see my models
i play with Raven Guard rules, but i made my own chapter, Obsidian Ravens
Aye that sounds dope, and whenever you can post them I'll look forward to seeing them!
Ill hopefully have these aggressors finished up this week as long as I stay on top of it lol

that's a Dread Knight, right?
looks sick
maybe it's cool if you paint chipped armour on there it looks like it's a weathered and useful Dread Knight in battle
Cerastus Knight Castigator
but it is from Grey Knights i suppose then
The boys so far ❤️
I would not mess with that guy in the middle, he means business
He swapping to the knife to make it a fair fight
FIX BAYONETS!
It's an Imperial Knight
the vamp boys
Also, I don't like to do weathering. I prefer a pristine look
I finished my Night Lords kill team. Ave dominus nox!
Hardly he’s fighting a fucking warhound Titan……the Titan is fucked
He’d also give the Titan a 5 minute head-start
Legend has it he IS John Warhammer
sly marbo fears him
bro done being an emperors good boy 😡
These are my next Kill team army! Good job my man!
any recommendations on a beginner brush set? (I'm new to painting so nothing too expensive)
Go to an art or craft store, look for royal and langnickel. Ignore hobby brands as they will just be about the same quality for a huge mark up
Death Korps of Krieg Killteam I painted a while back.
chat iv been getting into the minis side of Warhammer for a while but for my first actual army yall think i should do admech tyranids or eldar i cant decide
Eldar is probably the easiest to paint, others can be a bit fiddly
yeah I know the admech are prolly hell to paint I can tell that by looking at them, but the tyranids dont seem that hard ?
Depends on the model sure but still quite a few tentacles and such here and there
im def leaning eldar anyway tho cause the wraith guard and those blue eldar guys are rad
dire avengers
these guys
also a whole bunch of new character models were revealed last weekend and they all are excellent
went to my local warhammer store and took up the offer of first time tutorial today, was really nice to sit down in the store and learn 🙂
hell yeah
When in doubt, roll the dice
I'm building that box now for my local shop. Nice work!
I been working on a Skaven army, unsure if I can post it cuz that’s not 40K xD
go ahead, plenty of other hobby stuff here as well
This is what I have finished so far
Still have 20 more clanrats and 3 jezzails that I have assembled that need primed and painted
And of course, my general, Thanquol and Boneripper
Finished Boneripper and the base just need to paint Thanquol and glue him on top
Is my first army I’ve painted
