Hey so I'm planning on kitbashing custodes into thunder warriors using Mk III helmets, stormcast bits and generally some other stuff i can find

I want to give them a hopilite/spartan style especially for the custodes with shields

however I want the iconic heavy hopilite round shield look without breaking the bank and buying a whole set of other models just for their shields

such as the few stormcast model sets with round shields

my local game store is also very strict about 3rd party bits so I have to use official GW bits

Why not both, though í am pretty happy with those stripes. Especially after some agrax and nuln oil

THEN do yellow on top

It provides a much better behaving base coat and you won’t have to do thirty billion coats of yellow to get good coverage

As for the neatening, don’t be afraid to go over again. It will take practice to get better but they already look pretty stable

Maybe get some scrap plastic or something to just practice on getting steady, neat lines is an idea

Prime in whatever colour. Black, for example

Paint the pink stripes on.
Paint OVER them with Averland
Shade with casandora yellow
Neaten up with black as appropriate

While im partial to the Tiger Stripe camo with Yellow, Black, and brown, on my model its got me thinking about trying some of the other schemes from RT. Or to try and recreate the marines from the "Human Renegades" picture in the Rogue trader book as a force for Kill Team. And I think the big chunky size of the model is gunna lend to it really well.

Question for yall. I’ve been wanting to get into Horus heresy stuff for a bit and was curious what mark of armor I should go with? I’ve found myself drawn to Mk3 and Mk4. (I’ll be doing emperors children or Iron Warriors)

Mk III was the more common type of armour at the start of the heresy, as it went on this tended to change, for both of those legions Mk III generally fits the iron warriors more while Mk IV for the emp children

but the more paint you need to put on the more the detail will start to gunk up

I'm actually not shitting you here: snipping off small (literally like 0.5cm, 10-30 hairs max) little tufts of hair and taping them to the end of a pencil was how I did linework before I got myself more brushes, it actually works quite well

Otherwise: I've found that tiny scribbles like that are really easy to do with unthinned paint and a toothpick you just have to be quick to "brush" it

afaik you should shake them for 2 minutes, minimum. After shaking do a few test sprays to make sure the nozz isnt clogged. Don't use them in any temperature extremes, really high or low humidity and after youre done spraying turn the can upside down and spray til it runs clear to clean out the nozz, something like that.

oh and use in a well ventilated area, like outside

pearl metallic and mix with a transparent red like naphthol or pyrrole rubine or coat it with said red instead like jerk said, which is also known as a candy coat technique/process. Steel wont work for the mixture, pearl will give the best effect for both but its hard to find a good one outside of professional brands like Golden and Turner

but there is a red metallic, just not in most hobby paint lines

thats the pigment for the red metallic

you find it in a lot of craft and enamel paints

craft paint has the same pigmentation as hobby paint fun fact

at a glance im guessing you covered these fellows in nuln oil, it is very noticable on his head, pauldrons and feet and it doesnt look quite right

and im noticing quite a bit of paint from various different areas spilling over into other areas

id recommend you take your time to be neater

With white you shouldn't do a full wash with black due to how badly black pigments stain, same with red. White tends to absorb colors really easily and stain bad due to how much chalk is in white and chalk is used to make something called lake pigments which are dyed chalk.

With red use a brown wash, and white use a technique called a pin wash which is a more directed precision wash. You're aiming to only hit those crevices. If you want to get a bit more extra, mix a little blue into a black wash so its not as potent and meshes better in with the white.

To go an even extra mile, paint a black dot on the gun barrels. Sand them down too before you paint them as that sprue mark will catch washes and paint and cause problems. Mold lines will also get highlighted heavily when you dry brush and do washes, a paint in the ass to clear up but do help a lot to remove

ez eye trick, get a pure white like pro acryl titanium white, and once that's dry put a layer of green like warpstone glow on it

the annoying thing about the new skaven models is that the fur is only textured on certain parts of the arms so i have to actually transition my colors

it's a layer paint though so it's a bit less opaque so you might want to base it with some other base colour, like xv-88 or something

that is a bit orange in tone but think you'll find a fitting one

I buy 10+ pack brushes from aliexpress unless you want an "amazing brush"

Temu sell packs of 100 brushes for super cheap. They've got very poor quality control but at least half of them will be solid for any non detailing work and the ones that aren't suitable for normal painting are great for mixing paint, spreading basing pastes, drybrushing etc

I've taken to painting almost all of my metallics with cheaper brushes so I don't ruin my nice ones as quickly

Paint it all white, then focusing on the higher areas paint your chosen colour, return to the creavases with a white ink, then again focus on the chosen colour by making the furthest areas from the middle darker and then add a couple reflections to the top of the edge where the coils turn down

Yeah i was looking for something better than i currently have but ive looked through my old stuff and found a GW brush that will do the job. I just hate using brushes that have that L shaped crook on them. Gets super frustrating.

Little tip for the wet palette. If you are as stingy as me, you can cut your papers into halves or even smaller to not waste as much if you find yourself throwing them away before youve used up all the space.
