Well everytimes a new codex (army rulebook) comes out it doesnt mean they get new minis. Sometimes they get 1 or 2 new things. For example the new ork codex dropped last weekend and we only got a new mek. Everything else are the 'old' minis. And the guard got a lot of new models last time.(1 or 2 years ago) so i doubt there will be a lot of new minks for the astra militarum

assembling, painting and playing kill team will tell you if will like 40k without buying a 200 dollar combat patrol

if you never finish painting those models you'll know if its for you or not xD

or just buy 500 dollars in models like me xD

You can generally expect some level of consistency across editions when it comes to core models in your army. They may not have the exact same stats and abilities between editions but they'll generally be the same units and actual physical minis required so you won't be wasting your money by starting a collection before you know exactly what kind of strategies from the codex you want to build around.

Also new models rarely outright replace old ones, unless its a redesign of a super old mini, (you're typically fine to just use the old one if you have it) they tend to just give you new options that you can build around if you so desire.

I would even go as far as to say I'd actively urge you against buying things bc they're strong or new because balance will change and there's no guarantee you'll even get your models painted before they nerf or remove the strategy you were building around. When you first start collecting: only grab stuff you think is cool and base your collection on that, then start grabbing things you think you'll need to be competitive once you've scratched that itch.

Things do get a bit sketchy when it comes to names characters and unit variants sticking around long term, but you can often use them as proxies, I've never met anyone worth playing with who cares about proxies

From what I understand Beastmen are pretty inherently chaos tainted, it's what causes the mutations to begin with

So a beastmen army would likely be a heavily melee based chaos army and I feel like that's pretty redundant when you compare it to essentially any other chaos faction, just can't think of anything they could do that isn't already covered,

Wouldn't mind if they used them to flesh out chaos daemons a bit, but I think an actual standalone beastmen faction would be super redundant and would essentially just be a second world eaters that gets a super limited amount of psychic via Tzaangor Shaman

shading is always welcome, for the red mix in a little green to your red then shade it in those places for light shadow

then you can add the tiniest amount of black to it if you wanted to use black for shadows

just to get mid tone and low tone

for the white,mix in a tiny amout of blue, then start adding in tiny amounts of black

the black you tend to work with is carbon black which is a beast when it comes to tint strength

Yeah, I deicide to redo the cloak and used my white and black to get a grey for it and dont know where to go. The black the guy recommended was abbadon black, i was in a warhammer store.

So i only got citadel colors.

I dont use hobby paints, only premium grade and professional grade paints so my color stuff will be much different to yours

however the concepts are there

if you need black, get a 2oz bottle of golden soflat black and a 2oz bottle of the white. they are like $7

so you pay a few bucks more and get a ton more of a higher quality paint

the white is genuinely vastly superior to hobby whites

for skin tones though, add in a tiny bit of violet for shading

Im using NIR pigments so they will react different from normal stuff

they enhance natural shadows while only showing a minor tint

really good for TMM

This is why I play dark eldar since we lost models every year and it’s like they never even existed

Just a technicality thing here, an opaque pigment can never be exactly transparent due to how it interacts with light as the more layers you put on it blocks out the color below more and more, while a transparent pigment has to have a very high albedo to do that and it never really full blocks it out. This is something VERY important to know when you're trying to go for higher end art pieces.

Learning your pigments can really help this process a lot. Mixing colors is also pretty easy too, you just need to use a real color wheel like the RCW, get the CIECAM wheel and acknowledge the kubelka-munk curve. Sounds complex but isn't at all. It basically sums of as "if I mix this pigment with this pigment, it curves in this direction instead of a straight line"

it also doesnt coffee stain if the paint has adequate wetting, which a lot of lower paints don't. Wetting is a industry term for a specific type of surfactant additive

I get from 3rd party stores and pay in instalments over three months, not because I couldn't afford to buy with one payment, but I find that splitting up the payment tricks my monkey brain into buying less because I won't buy anything more until I've paid off the previous purchase.

Logistically if I want to buy less than 100 euro worth of stuff, it's easier for me to order from GW directly. Let's say it's a LI box that has a GW price of 40 euro. On a discount site, it's 34 euro. Delivery to a GW location where I'll be gaming anyway is free, but for the discount store delivery is 6 or 7 euro. Moreover, if I order from GW to deliver to my home, they'll use DHL or some other reliable carrier, and I'll get the package at home. If I order from the discount store, my only option is PostNL. They typically first send me a mail with an expected delivery date, then day of they mail that they couldn't make it, and will drop it off the next day at a mail office/point that's "closest to me", but is on the other side of town, with several other drop off points being closer to me.

So it's just not worth the hassle for me a lot of the time.

Opposite for me, GW's shipping is awful because they use private delivery services which take atleast a week to ship and then never deliver on the scheduled day, meanwhile 3rd party stores use Royal Mail and it arrives the next day.

the sad thing is the cost difference really isnt that different and tends to cost more than second hand with the type of resin you need to use being very expensive

I printed out most of an army for one of the people here and it was still over $120

you can also solve part of that issue by hollowing out some models, which i sadly dont see done much

a leman russ for example has no reason to be a solid brick of resin

i also print models that are rare to find like old forge world ones. those models fetch for insane prices on second hand for no reason

1: hive tyrant is more or less just an upscaled version of the warrior kit which was a little disappointing

2: I'll never get over how funny the trex vibe this thing has pre-weapons

3: it's so much smaller than you'd expect, winged hive tyrant does a lot more with the wingspan and pose than you realise at first

how varnish protects from grime is by it being a removable layer for cleaning

its typically removed with just ammonia which doesnt affect the paint below

artist varnish also doesnt protect against handoils

Every time I think about actually playing with my models I look at the codex and stack of errata for each book. The stories and lore in each book are great, but their output rate for books is so slow books are written and start printing long before release and rules have changed since in so many ways.

It'd be nice just to have an online source that can be quickly changed and updated then have a coffee table book of art and short stories.

Even before tetras got canned, they lost a lot of their power with the changes to crisis suits. The whole big power with tetras also hinged on having a brick of crisis with cyclic ion blasters, so all those rerolls on a huge number of strong shots just super amplified an already strong unit.

I'm glad our play is a lot more varied now.

I was actually close to buying a Y'vahra last night though, so glad I held off on it haha.

The aspect of losing the ability to play cool looking models sucks for any model that gets sunsetted

Hopefuly the direction they're going with Forgeworld is to slowly re-introduce plastic variants of a lot of the things that are dying.

There was a leak a while ago which suggested GW plan to remove most/all resin kits from their range by the end of 2025 because new UK laws are coming which will increase the production costs for Resin minis and GW is notoriously cheap so it checks out.

So they probably plan to replace as many resin kits with plastic as possible before that happens

and I've also heard rumours that Old World was released earlier than intended (which is why it has so many old models) as an attempt to create a new revenue flow to fund the process of switching so many kits from resin to plastic without hurting profits.

Modern Forge World sculpts are very good actually, basically anything released after 2018 or 2019 has been very good in quality

But partly it has been because the particular moulds have not been used as much yet so they've not deteriorated

I don’t follow it exactly but it helps. Something extra for the heart is I usually use a pencil lightly to mark out a diamond and then turn that into a heart before actually painting which helps me at least a lot for doing it

I went a contrast black for boots, backpacks, and shoulder straps. Agrax wash all cloth to unify, then lightly dry brush a warm gray on the black

Use the same color of the metal terrain on bits of the metal belt buckles, shoulder straps, maybe even the power boxes and some weapons. You could make it look like similar scrap metal from the same source. But I wouldn’t go too far into matching since you want them to stand out.

Find a khaki you like BC that seems like the base colour to everything, lighten it for the underbelly, darken for the back, blend the two where they meet, then build up dry bushing layers, afterwards, mixing your colours darker as you build up (except the face and chest)

arms look like they're mostly brown/tan/khaki, the back shoulders and top of the face look like they're much more green tinted and the actual face itself is very pink tinted around the face
