#40k-minis-and-armies

I was gonna do something like this for my Tabletop RPG of Warhammer. It was gonna be about a group of inquisition Agents investigating an abnormal clan of Orks in which they worship one of their own they consider the emperor - and are at war with humanity because they think the humans copied them.
Was gonna have the mock space marine chapters be them in different colored metal barrels
The moment when you start stripping paint off 14 year old minis, to repaint them as a new part for your new existing army....
This is V.IV Rusty, checking in
Must...have...more...Eldar...
Turnin the mini of the month into an ancient
I'm painting my kill team ruler rn and need help with ideas
I'm doing a chaos theme for them, black legion/Vashtorr on the long skinny one and 1 for each chaos god on the face of each normal ruler, I'm putting nurgles rot and making the nurgle one look slimy and gross, using blood for the blood god on the Khorne one, doing a big colour blend in contrast paints for the tzeentch but I have no idea what kind of special effect to do to make the Slaanesh one pop
Suggestions welcome
which kill team is this?
Is there a way to cover my guardsman faces so I don’t have to paint them
Green stuff balaclavas/dust masks, or get alternate gas mask heads or full helmets
Dire Avengers in progress
if you are trying to do something with paints my go to would be neon paints
glow in the dark paints, super high saturation type stuff
fluorescent
I'm a noob who's never touched fluorescent paints but might be a neat way to distinguish them
Dire Avengers finished
thats not yellow, thats amber
the whole magenta things just makes orange and amber, not yellow with howthe light interacts with it
for actual yellow you want white and violet
god im crotchety in the morning
Gellerpox Infected. Would love to see Nurgling/Glitchlings be added to the game. Imagine areas heavily infected with Nurgle’s blight, with these large blisters that if they burst a small swarm of nurglings pop out of them.
Oh I'd love that
Been saying that too, where in Vermintide they added beastmen, for Darktide the most comfortable addition would probably be to skip directly to demons
Nurglings would be so fun
Those look great! Just finished assembling my own Gellerpox and priming them tomorrow. What color did you use on the pustules? Is that Nurgles Rot on everyone?
Did my best
The base looks sick
WIP more Avengers
Little guy
kinda pale dead skin thing for the other shoulder, might do something entirely different for it later if this doesn't start feeling like it fits
Having a pretty fun time with the beast snaggas, gave them all different color pelts
Not my only decision is to do patterns on them or not
Starting a new boi
hell yeah
Cutie patootie
What i used to see when seeing an unpainted guardsman to what i have been reprogramed to see now:
I’m struggling so much painting the armor plates
Looks like if I took a bite of him it would be a whole explosion of various flavors! Or a lot of different really good chocolates.
Basically every new update I want to eat this amazing lil guy more and more!
Also how tf did y'all paint the fly swarm in that set?? bc I don't even know where to start
That's probably the most interesting thing I could do, was just gonna be glitter and shitty freehand otherwise lol
Just the rulers that come with the set, no actual team
This is one of them
Not finished obviously but you kinda see what I'm going for
Oh yeah nearly done with my kill team barriers also
Gotta add another a coat of blue rust on the cleaner one and add moss to the dirt on the filthy one
have you ever seen those dye festivals?
paint it all crazy like its at a festival/party involving colors
its slanneshi
All I know is trying to not break those things is gonna kill me! But to better answer the question I’m going to follow Midwinter Minis on most of the set.
Get all 23 Gellerpox Infected models from the Kill Team: Rogue Trader box set painted up in about 8 hours with these easy, effective techniques.

That getting turned into a paint scheme would be crazy
those aare pigments, not dyes
There is a difference
Actually yes
Dyes fade quickly, most pigments dont
this is important to know
Dyes are water soluable, pigments arent
Dyes would make you rainbow colored for months, yes
phthalo makes me hands blue for like a week at the most
and thats a dye like pigment
he's like the only oil painter ive heard of that like phthalo blue
most use ultramarine
and I call them pussies
i did a lot of sketching of like
nature landscapes as a kid
and when i found him it made me really happy
Bob Ross was the goat
Is there a vehicle only faction
Painting vehicles and knights is lot more fun than painting guys
well
knights
Most factions CAN take mostly vehicles I just don't think its optimal
vehicle heavy sisters of battle lists are actually very very good right now
guard/SM can do pretty good tank focused armies
as he should, he makes most people happy
become a tread head guard player, although youll probably want some infantry
got a mini of rodin, sadly not correct size to proxy as a model (yet)
the rinda model didn’t come out well so i’ll have to reprint that at somepoint, but at a more correct size
Remember, you can always make a model a statue! The leader of the chaos rebellion getting a statue in his name!
3d printed, i found the stl online
Yeah problem is I'm doing something kinda similar for the Tzeentch one already,
But honestly with how things are laid out I think I could do a colour blend for the Slaanesh and use green-orange-pink, then go Cyan-Purple-Pink for the Tzeentch one and I have the faces laid out so one side is khorne/tzeentch and the other is Nurgle/slaanesh so it'll be arranged so that there's a sticky one next to a pretty one and I think that'll read as being coherent
Are you going to create holes for the face plate
First Chaplain for me, the sculpt is awesome, but damn when glued together it's a pain to paint
which is why i always do subassemblies
ooooh that green on the boltpistol is lovely
what chapter is this fine fellow @woven saffron
Raptors, like all my SM
Thanks!
super smooth gradient too
sorry not gradient
uhhhh
the brushwork is basically nonexistant, looks really crisp
Thanks again, and yeah, I don't want/like to have any brush strokes, so I glazed with 2 to 3 coat of paint. Black was done with contrast paint with 3 coats too, for keeping details and having a good black without having issue of a big black spot while glazing with the green
Custom based and primed. Can’t wait to start them but wow is it exhausting.
Damn that's basically an entire Chapter
@ocean pendant chapter? Ew. Legions are where it's at
You can also add is a slow dry additive(can't post the actual name it seems), The longer it takes for an acrylic to dry the smoother it will be, and less brushstrokes will be as aparent.
Didn't know that trick, good to know, thanks!
I love them so much
Speed drying (like hair drier or using alcohol) will cause the brush strokes to be more preminent, remember that acrylics are a thermoplastic and will respond to tempratures in unexpected ways
I would suggest buying 2 of that box just for kitbashes and basing
Let me get my maid knight completed first. Then yes
left leg process tonight
Maid knight so far
who made the skirt?
Someone I commissioned
ohh
I have the whole knight commissioned for 200
Just finished my first primaris
"Have faith word bearer!"
I will
Starting into star wars legions but I'm at a loss when it comes to painting lightsabers. My 2 options are to 1. Paint the blade the color I want then do a white stripe down the center or 2. Paint the entire blade white and layer glazes from the emitter to the tip in more and more layers. Which sounds better?
Any one have any tips for painting guardsman
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SOMEONE'S MAKING IT
I got my leviathan dreadnought finished and some other iron warriors
The blood looks crazy
Taking the literal approach to the phrase “crimson fist”
Dunno how I feel about the black pipe at the front, thinking it absorbs too much light
Not sure what colour to change it to?
Check out the pictures people shared of painting Star Wars: Imperial Assault figures. Some good stuff there.
Lol that's a mood I've based mind in advance so I don't make a mess of my paintjob but Tzeentch knows when I'm actually going to paint them
Glazes will probably look more like an actual lightsaber.
Personally I'd go what I do for every other glow effect: mix the brightest white you have 1:1 with contrast medium and base everything.
Then do a mix with slightly less medium and whatever colour you want going over. You always end up with some of the undercoat showing generally
Imperium, why do you keep turning in Tau's homework
:>
I think it's just the lenses but it really does look super Tau to me idk
It's too bad planes suck I'd like an excuse to paint my heldrake
it has hover
so you can just run it as a floating tank
tell me that aint a sexy transport
20" move over terrain, drop some mortal wounds on the way and BLOOP 10 man proteus kill team with 6 hammers whacking away on your knight
Wiay actually this is cool
SORRY ITS A FLYER I THOGUHT IT BAD
Eyyy, all my anti fly weapons finally have purpose
And finished a Terminator now, damn I need some sleep now
Affirm' sir
🫡
Chunky valk
thats really not that much honestly, this is a type of thing that can take hours and requires a high degree of skill
Last knight I modifed and painted sold for $3500
took about 100 hours, it way lower than my normal pay but that wasnt a big deal
I mean yeah compared to the hobby 200$ isn’t a lot
But 200$ is still 200$
Yeah, I started glueing them down and realized it would be a pain to dry brush the metal grating or do the ooze under Vulgrar with the models on top. But after doing the Novitiates as so many subassemblies I really just want to have one model to paint without all the mess of trying to pin and paint little bits.
What did you do to make those bases?
oh yeah, it seems like a lot of money in theory. its why trying to start a career in mini painting commissions is stupid, people expect full armies painted for like $50
but when they see $5000+ they freak out then say "but I can get this army off ebay for $800 thats already painted" but the work on it is awful
I don’t get paying for commission for army painting
That’s like 80% of the fun
Its mostly tournament players
they want something quick and easy that they dont have to do
they dont like building or painting, only playing
Kinda lame ngl
very
Ugh, some of the 3 color tournament paints I've seen are embarrassing
yes, hence why they generally want a professional to do them, because they look better on camera than a shitty painted one
its a tax write off for them
Painting and getting pissed is for fucking up is like the fun part of the hobby
Especially when it's on a channel like PlayOn and you've got these gorgeous models fighting a 3 color monstrosity. Think they stopped letting there guests bring those armies because the comments were wild
That’s my least favorite part of the community
Like the lore and painting is so cool
I can think of other parts of the 40k community that are A LOT worse than sloppy lazy 3 color painters (edit)
Who?
Sloppy painters is just a skill issue
(I’m one)
Many more political answers, but lets go with the people who doxxed and intimidated Archon of Flesh into leaving the fandom entirely because they didn't like Archon's art.
Shit happens
Yeup
And it’s old
My healing mat has a brown tint cuz of spills
The chainsaw arm tho
Can't have that, lil dude's gonna be lonely
Might make a scout variant
its sadly a lot of this community who do that
I used Vallejo mud to build up a texture, built it up extra high around the edges to make a kinda "bowl" in the centre, then used an olive pigment powder/dirty off-white drybrush for colour, then filled the middle in with a massively thick coat of Vallejo vomit, making sure not to disturb it too much so there's no streaks and it dries smooth, while it's drying I deposited nurgles rot kinda here and there to give colour variation and then most of them I went over afterwards with a super thinned down fluro yellow
Oh yeah and dirty down moss for the top layer/pondscum
you can make a better less toxic moss effect very easily
if you're interested that is
also cheaper
It kinda sucks anyway ngl. Idk wtf midwinter did with theirs but it actually looked like moss when they used it
I'm pretty sure I can just mix a dark green into contrast medium with a tiny bit of gloss and call it a day
he edits his videos heavily and makes things way more sensationalized and seem way better than they are
It looks like contrast paint when you're using it except it stinks like fuckin hair spray
yeah its pretty much the same thing
the rust is neat but ultimately useless for doing them if you have, the verdiris is aalso useless
Yeah I already have Vallejo rust and nihilak oxide for those effects and they've served me pretty well so far
Nihilak oxide in particular I adore, I love FX paints that apply with the same logic as the thing they're replicating if that makes sense
The political side of the community is a actual turn off
nihilak oxide is also super easy to mix up
Like a always see dudes who type a paragraph when they see a female space marine
yeah its garbage, hence why I avoid twitter and reddit.
Fair
There’s quite a bit of it on insta tho
I'm not sure how to state this without pissing people off but Warhammer fans have the most potent and bipolar autism of any fangroup of any franchise and it's not even slightly close
It's like you've mixed the most extreme forms of having super niche interests, absolutely no social skills or empathy.
It's the only franchise where you're just as likely to find unironic 4th reichers as you are to find trans furries and you're more likely to find either of those than a normal, well adjusted human being
I dunno man tf2 has the same bipolar autism
insta is just zoomer facebook
I've literally had to tell people who have come up to me to chat about Warhammer in my LGS to get the fuck away from me before because they manage to cross some social line in a 5 minute conversation that's so bad I actually feel the need to get confrontational and I'm almost never a confrontational person
True that
I mean, Ive seen worse communities but after covid the 40k fanbase is hyper unfriendly towards people with autism unless its the alt-right, which makes things way worse
Nazis always gotta ruin shit
Like there's this one guy whos a massive Krieger fanboy who will like full volume sing WW2 German war songs and stuff and it is the only thing he ever wants to talk about
They ruined a perfectly good war according to the english
See I'm a massive krieg fan but I'm also a fan of WWI and WWII french military things, which is what krieg is based off of...
Be carful of krieg fanboys
My hobby time is spent exclusively with my actual IRL friend group, Warhammer randoms are too much of a gamble socially lol
Yeah that's my favourite part they should be Steel Legion fanboys if anything
Exactly
And just like the nazis, they try to erase france's history
I love being a jungle fighters fan
Based Chem Dogs enjoyer here
I think i figured out my knights actually
dkok knights
the most uncanonical thing ever
Let me run my elite berserker guard infantry GW just copy and paste the fyreslayer rules if you gotta
Massive gas mask
HUGE SHOVEL
Modified knight helms to have a more gas mask vibe, yes
and honestly this new rotary tool I got is the reason why i decided to do this
I want to see a guardsman fight with no vehicle or artillery
I can actually get the precision holes I need now
It just took getting a proxxon to do it...
My wallet hurts
If I ever collect guard it's going to be infantry guard tanks are cringe and lame
I love the way you think
Take that back
Nah
Tanks are overrated as shit
It's a huge part of why I play ksons lol I actually really don't like them or mechs
Tau's entire visual design is a huge miss for me. You had a chance to make a covenant race and you decided to.....make an army out of shit another company already does better and has a super dedicated fanbase for..nice
Give me my psychic fucking owlbears GW
Oh so like everything GW does?
I deal in facts and fact accessories
As someone who's primary reason for wanting to play at all was playing emps children: yes
They need to get her archaic business model together
What faction do you play slpiff
Ksons and a bit of demons/csm
I have a tonne of random kill teams tho bc it's easier to get irl friends who are on the fence to play
Still waiting on the other half of my range for ksons lol
the most fashionable army
wait
I love ksons marines
@hollow goblet Like these colors?
Best looking chaos faction
That's probably closer to the way I'd highlight my magenta stuff for ksons, EC I've always preferred the rich purple/gold vibe
these are extinct pigments im trying to make and use for my armies
PV49 cobalt violet
Ooo that's clean asf. Hot pink is like notoriously difficult to make right?
I've heard it's an absolute pain to mix/use almost no matter what
This is but mostly because its incredibly toxic
you can mix a similar color witth quinaridone but its not the same as this
Yeah I remember reading some article in your server about how a lot of the best paint pigments are insanely toxic and finding substitutes that are safe is super tricky
yep
Like we have an alternative to cobalt blue which is more blue than cobalt blue is, but the cost of it is extremely high and thats yinmn
Cobalt blue isnt really toxic at all, but its envrionmental and ethical concerns are the problem
Do it taste good
no
Heard it jokingly said if the "think tanks" and "war game" people of the cold war had had 40k, we might not have had as long of a Vietnam war or cold war in general. 40k is the niche hobby that lets people push little soldiers around a map and feel awesome without the whole real life bloodshed. That also means it is the funnel/silly slide for all the worst people to sink down into.
☹️
You might not have seasoned it right then. Next time add a pinch of salt to enhance the flavours.
Coworker suggested i should paint my guardsmen as german and did the nazi salute
I was just sitting there like this
NO WAY
NOOOOOWAY
It's terrifying being a nonconforming individual here fr
guh
Sounds like you live in the southern US
ouch
It is not baja california idk why i said that
Im south western CA
Im basically next to baja california
Does anybody here PLAY necromunda?
nope
407 guardsmen for 9th edition
They always get super defensive and weird when you tell them to fuck off
"It's just a joke man"
Yeah sure, unless I'd agreed with you: then it wouldn't have been
I'm only going to say this once and i will drop it but they once whispered to me "we wont get any raises because we're white"
He said this like minutes after i got a raise
Necromunda exists to sell genestealers lol
The gangs make good cultists for chaos armies too
I've seen some sick Escher gang Slaansh/khorne cultists
You should really look into the rules for necromunda they are sick
My buddy and I are gonna do a campaign over tabletop simulator
I've never really looked into it. I tend to not really enjoy regular tabletop games its mostly the skirmish/war games that stand out to me atm
I mean, I do enjoy the lore element of the franchise, wanna run a 40k DnD campaign at some stage just gotta work out the kinks converting stuff
Your models like progress and level up as you battle out scenarios and fight over terroritory
Its sick
Kinda like narrative kill team?
How do you get rid of a cup of mineral spirits and isopropyl alcohol
Thanks
Yes!
But with like sick skill trees and actual narrative decisions (im not sure if the skill trees were homebrewed rules but they seemed cool)
Lots of immersion
Umm… why bash dnd into 40k when there are already several rpgs that focus on 40k. Or even an open system like genysis.
Dnd is too focused on “kill the enemy and loot the room” to really capture 40k. Either your super powered and don’t bother with loot or you’re weak and squishy and need to be able to run and accumulate wounds and mutations.
https://www.reddit.com/r/killteam/comments/10gtgfo/acolyte_a_kill_team_adventure_game/
Acolyte is a similar fan made version with kill team as a base.
Thats sick!
I like the DnD archetypes and adapting them into different universes is half the fun
Like I'm soft reworking Warlock and Paladin to work via the warp gods and I enjoy the process of figuring out what I'd change and where to make it function, I much prefer that to boring myself trying to learn how someone else's pre-made system works
I understand the joy of trying to make something fit… I just really love how Dark Heresy and Only War had wounding and crits that affect you more than “do they still have 1hp? They behave as if full hp”
Couldn’t care less about the mechanics of war games… but mechanics of rpgs are my thing and DnD has always felt bland and binary.
@plush swift Ninjon just released a video just shitting all over most hobby paints, might be a redemption arc lol
He's validated my extremely strong belief that scale75 sucks ass so he's winning so far imo
Yee I like RPG's on paper but I think you need to find the right group for them or they just don't work
Scale 75 does suck ass
True… it’s just a bit sad that most people only know DnD and don’t want to learn a system that might fit better thematically in the mechanics. Romcom rpg? DnD! Drama and murder mystery? DnD!
Also… 1 minutes into that Ninjon video and I’m angry that he had that much paint on the wall to begin with!
yeah he's not a very good painter either but everyone thinks he is
hot take I know
But I guess if you’re sent huge boxes for promo work you’re going to collect a lot. Still. Love some other YouTubers that are just like “hell yeah I use cheap shitty craft paint to paint this terrain. Why would I waste 20 bottles if I can get a bucket?!”
Just got to be better than most people and commit to making the content. The controversy drives clicks and comments and you get more engagement.
hes an award winning painter too but if you look at his work, its very sloppy
the only reason why I even say anything is because he has won awards
so, this opens you up to criticism
I understand. I’m not anywhere close to that level, just enjoy deconstructing things. He’s making more from the hobby than I am.
Also, the comments begging for him to give away the paint or share it are hilariously thirsty. Half of what he said he was ditching were in fact just moved off the shelf for later. So it was really just a reorganizing and promotion of the new box
sounds like him
Scale 75 was good when I needed to find a weird grey, other than that I'm going to two thin coats range rn
Also will say Dwarven Gold is actually based
its a smart marketing move business perspective. You praise content creators, you give them incentives to market towards potential customers and spark their interest.
Of course any professional painters and others may disagree and have hot takes, but so far that's the general consensus.
I have seen extremely hyper realistic hobby painters on instagram and they didnt win any awards as far as i can tell. They just do it because they love it.
Their metals are the exception their gold and decayed metal are probably my most used
Two thin coats, the most expensive acrylic paint in the world.
But yeah scale metallics are ok, but they're not great for doing a true metallic medal look, They are just not shiny enough for that
Oh it's very smart, That's why you tend to give them so much paint and then they tend to hang it up on their wall that's why it's always in the background
its free promotions, sounds like a win to me. The cost of the those paints arent that much compared to the marketing interests they are getting (unless its bad review)
I do hope more quality paints gets better treatment if they step up their game a bit
Hobby artists and "true" artists are never gonna be the same group of people tho, that's kinda the whole issue with this sort of thing
It doesn't seem like many popular hobby painters (especially on YT) have any real formal art education, they're kinda just winging it, which would absolutely appeal more to the average "beer and pretzels" player bc it's achievable and human
I have a pretty big music background and this sort of thing reminds me of the constant war between formal jazz/classical music education vs EDM and punk, the genres don't really lend themselves to the approach of the other camp, and as much as I love Jazz, a lot of it is just esoteric wanking and trying to find as many permutations of a musical idea as you can without really trying to make music and it loses most people's ear even if it's impressive
Whereas punk has this "c'mon dude: I could spend a week learning guitar and shit out better riffs than this daily" thing to it: but people tend to connect with it more, art isn't a meritocrasy: it's art
Sorry for rant I'm several beers in
Jazz punk exists, it's just called industrial
I've heard it, it's weird
That's the thing, higher quality paints don't need to do that because they already dominate the market.
I've also noticed that the best paint companies tend to have the least amount of advertising, while the ones that advertise the most tend to also be some of the lower quality things. Like pro acryl
A good example is golden, They make more money than all of the hobby paints combined on paint sales supposedly. It's hard to track down the exact numbers for how much these companies are worth
Proacryl is not great, It's just better than a lot of the dog shit hobby paint everyone is used to. It doesn't make it a good paint.
Oh dw I've heard every permutation of jazz lol it's an incredibly broad and easy genre to hybridize, but in a formal setting it's very traditional and they tend to turn their nose up at fusion genres and anything modern
Industrial is completely different btw lol it's more of a heavily textured heavy metal/hardcore generally
Get more deeper into the industrial scene, it's closer to glitch these days.
A lot of the old stuff was fusion genres like disco punk.
The big ones are more towards the metal side like NIN and Rammstein
I think it was ministry who was disco punk but it could have been skinny puppy. I was never super into either one so I don't remember
Also most jazz musicians are wankers so it all makes sense
I mean trying to actually hard define any kind of rock-derivative genre after like 2000 is a bit of a fruitless endeavour anyways the second the internet popped up people have been obsessed with hybridizing everything and redefining genres based on the scene they came out of
New wave and post-punk are literally the same thing and most of the core genres are just people arriving at death metal via different base genres
Horrorterrorcore is totally not death metal with electronica... Totally not
Yeah it's tricky tho bc it genuinely does take an extremely high degree of technical proficiency to play jazz but it always hits a point where it just stops being music and I feel like a lot of people feel the same way w formal art stuff vs mini painting
Like as far as their minis go most people are pretty happy plucking their slightly out of tune P bass and don't really aspire for more
Which is fine, as doing formal art gets... let's just say dadaism leave it at that
I am a fan of dadaism, but it's something most will look at and say "that's not art, that's just a bicycle on a ceiling"
Which is entirely the point
It's there to mock the art industry, nothing more
I think both have a similar level of like grindy, brain numbing skill-honing and can jump off into being really abstract and hard to understand for most people pretty quickly
Yes, incredibly true
Mini painting is still paint by numbers which is a bit devoid of artistic drive and passion, which sounds offensive but it isn't. Lego is the same way, but you still feel accomplished after completing a kit.
I've always been a big fan of impressionist/abstract art but I do find the modern stuff a little hard to stomach if you don't have a blurb explaining the super clever satire it's making abour consumerism
I think that's why I like it tbh, the only aspect of visual art I was ever any good at was colour theory. So big boy colouring in is essentially exactly what I was after
Yep, And if you want to you can change that, you can make it so that it's not paint by numbers.
It's a good hobby because there's so many variables to it
Would like to get to the point where I can maybe freehand banners but I don't need to go around collecting the creativity infinity gauntlet I already have a half finished book and album lmao
Do it
Finish the book
The perfect amount
Did the math due to the fact that GW said back in 9th it took 150 guardsmen to kill Angron. I wanted to see how far I could took that
work in progress pic for Be'lakor
It mainly uses conscripts and was "playable"
its been so freeing to get into a creative hobby like this after being told my whole life i could never do a visual medium like painting or drawing bc of my disability :D
I know and don't know what you mean xD, I've always had shit hand eye cords but hey it's nice now. And I'm happy for you to find something that brings you joy!
ah yeah i have dyspraxia which is hand eye so bad it is diagnosable so im right there with ye
yeah naw fuck that, there are tons of dyspraxic artists
those people are idiots who tell you that
Art is about expression
If you're super concerned about clean painting, just use shield, frisket, museum putty, etc
and if you're a perfectionist, get something like a cricut and cut out friskets sheets with it
there are ways to do everything and by pass everything
actually thats a good idea... I should sell friskets/shields for mini painting designed for people with things like dyspraxia
I have all the tools for it
laser cutters, etc
Also I don't have dyspraxia but I do have a mild hand tremor and I find having something to lean your hands on makes all of the difference
I was able to almost pinstripe freehand on my kill team ruler purely bc I was able to support my hand against the mini while I did it and it kept the line straight
My mildy converted krieg sergeant
Loadsa green today, mostly focusing on the backside
What paints did you use
Green
no wya
Okay so. First pal is dead. Forgot to thin paint like idiot
the blue is very strong so just a dash of it for the very brightest highlights
And a touch of this for the shades

these six are basically all of the paints I've used for the model thus far
My 3D printer squirted on me
Interesting... both the paints and the printer
phthalo pigments are considered nightmare pigments because their tint strength is obserbly high, only a few pigments can come close and even they fail to tame phthalos, you need such a small amount to make an acrylic too. The issue is they are also one of the most problematic pigments to make paint from since they require such specific amounts of wetting agent that there isnt a handbook for at all as every company has decided thats a trade secret
its roughly around 1-3% in volume which is an obscene amount of wetting agent, most pigments that need it are around 0.1-0.5%
Wear safety goggles
I may have hyperfocused a bit.
I got normal glasses so I’m good
I’m good with me hands
as long as the resin doesnt get into your eyes
My warboss feels a little plain, what could I add to him to make him pop?
I'd say give him some orky boots and scratch off the dark angels symbols so u can paint a real symbol
He's just too space marine still
Good advice! Here's my plan
- Scratch off all the symbols and paint that area as bare metal
- Add more spiky bits to the shoulder, shield,
- Make a custom Boss pole of space marine helmets and other trophies,
- Put a skull as the other pauldron
- Make smokestacks on the back piece
- After painting the yellow, heavily battle damage
I may leave the chest Aquila and just paint it a gaudy gold
It’s insane how much cooler the steel legions is compared to the krieg
Without them we wouldnt have Krieg. They started off as just a paint scheme for the Steel Legion
Need to get me some SL at some point
clean up the mold lines and add more crude spikes
Free sentinel
Hobby knife gon be working overtime tonight
it would be insane if they were'
I need to teach you how to sculpt plasticard dont I?
its super good for orky conversions
I wouldn't say no to that, I have some plasticard I'm just terrible at working with it
The most I've done are wood slats for my badrukk base
I meeeaaan
they arent
We are all entitled to our opinion even tho they might be wrong
True, your opinion is wrong
Erm buddy not to be that guy buut I think your wrong
Nope, they have lamer gas masks
and worse drip
Steel legion have better drip
so true, speak your truth, the K in krieg is for kringe
oh no, krieg is totally cringe, and the fan base is far worse, but they have better drip
HONK MI MI MI😴
sure, its not hard to do, even more so since you're making it orky
Thanks! I'm pretty proud of it
listen I like glossy finish
i think glossy and a bit cartoony looking is better
than matte
More Dire Avengers
does anybody know of an app that lets you put a weapon profile and a defensive profile into and it tells you the average damage?
statistics is hard for my tiny brain and I want an easy way to visualize damage
is he carrying a Knight's head on his back?
understandable, have a good day
what if the knights face plate falls off how is he gonna look cool
you keep spare tires tied to your back right
I could see the Marine grab the chain and smash heretics with the faceplate tbh
like this guy from Guilty Gear
If you don't account for rerolls or special rules (such as lethal hits), it's fairly doable to setup in excel.
Oh, found something
https://www.rolegenerator.com/en/module/w40k
Man, I just spent 3 hours removing paint from 33 miniatures with a toothbrush
I hate every second of it, and I have about 40 more minis to do that way
at least they were cheap
does an ultrasound bath make all the paint go away on its own, or is there still a toothbrush paint removal step after it?
I've been using a 96% alcohol solution btw, in France it's called "burning alcohol", idk how in other countries
it's basically ethanol with 4% of other stuff
oh those jewelry cleaner things? never thought about trying to get paint off with it
maybe you can soak it in the solvent and then strip it in the bath
The Forces app has that as a paid feature. It's the one where you can import your list from Battlescribe.
MY FACE IS MY SHIELD???
That's his back
HIS BACK IS HIS SHIELD
these things dont work well tbh.
Takes about 120 hours on average to clean a mini
But I've had it take over 800 hours before
But you could put a lot of minis at once in it, no? Because if so, that still makes it a lot shorter than the 3h I had to do manually for 30 minis
not really, it just makes it take even longer and at that point, the solvents have killed the plastic
what it does is free up your time
so you can do other things
but I prefer having an employee manually clean something than be down a tool for several days
ah, well
back to the toothbrush it seems, then
that are also weirdly dangerous
they super heat the liquid inside so half the solvents people recommend will create toxic fumes, the other half will explode or catch fire
What are they good for then?
And how bad are ultrasonic 5% concentrate solutions for mini plastic (e.g. ticopuur r 33)?
no idea, they are good for reducing your own working time, thats about it
Dont know, I only tried a few
I was talking about those because I saw videos of people using them to strip minis
But finally, after a whole afternoon of stripping manually, here's the results
It's not perfect (there's still a few paint spots), it'll be almost as new when primed
I striped some paint off one of my Guardsman and made him into a burn victim
"WE'RE DA MEANEST AND GREENEST 'DERE IZ!"
Finished up this Warboss last night.
C r u s t
Goop fellow
Added the last little bit, wanted to make the axe a Halberd but instead of another blade, a shoota
I also wanted to add as many power sources as I could to the back to make it look like he's super charged the armor
Botta get some skulls for the skull throne
Last addition to My warboss, added these space marine trophies on the bosspole. Proper orky or too much?
WAIT A MINUTE
Is it supposed to be a requisitioned power armor or an ork construct?
Let's say "Borrowed and refined"
His name is Gazreel, Warboss of da deff angels
I wrote lore
Very slow day at work
Now my only dilemma is ejat chapter to paint the helmets as
I reckon some teef added to the armour wouldn't go astray tbh, gives you a way to counterbalance all of the small imperium details
I wish I had some spare teef bits
Do you have greenstuff? they're relatively easy to sculpt if you make them a little more canine, molars are sorta hard to make tho imo
Or it's pretty easy to make like a whole lower jaw if you get a thinner piece, make a bunch of small balls and dent the top of them in with an x shaped tool and put them on the skinny bit
Yeah I have green stuff. Never really messed with it tho
Don't think I have pics but I made one for a friend's seraphon one time
I'll see if he;ll send
https://youtu.be/LPq84km-ckE?si=RPP5KBLjPPfM-Kpr
this vid will probably do the trick for what I was talking about at first tho]
In this video, I'll show you how to make a wolf tooth necklace using green stuff.
Check out my work on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/valbjorn/
It’s done but god I wish I had soilworks snow and Vallejo frost paint to really bring it up
Like this?
yeah pretty much exactly that, add a little size variation for different species and you're golden I reckon
Like heaps of tyrannids have super long skinny teeth, orks tend to be pretty girthy, I imagine aeldar teeth are tiny, makes the warboss seem more badass like they've rolled a bunch of other species on top of the imperium
I may scrap that idea
Because these are NOT reading as teeth
But as always, my ever faithful companion, bits bit, comes in clutch
Also for the shield, I was thinking of doing tally marks all over it, like he keeps track of how many enemies it immolates, I think that would look cooler than a painted symbol
Funnily enough a base spray paint of death guard green
I has minis
And I still got the Warriors and Scarabs to do
Sidenote: I fucking hate the easy-join pegs
They fucking aren't. And with how pointy some of the Necron bits are, they're a stabbing hazard when trying to get them to join flush
And now some Etsy and Sigmar
roll a blunt shape, bend it, let it dry, carve it a little
I might re paint my guardsmen army
I got a really good idea for a paint scheme and theme
Well, boss has turd collection. Nottin wrong with that...
Love the paint jobs just one thing. Nice finger xD
Finger isn't in any of them. Phone casing is a one-size-fits-all thing. Part of it covers the camera if I don't pull it back
And thank ye
Lmfao xD, fair but seriously based paint job brother. Love the bases too!
Also I know what you mean by hating push fit. First box I owned I ended up breaking the necron arms because they were push fit
How do I paint a cammo pattern on a small model
I’m having trouble making this read as camo
What do i use when wanting to stick resign to gw plastic?
Finger
resign? do you mean resin or? if so, super glue is your best option, but there are tons of options that technically have a stronger bond
What kind of camo are you after?
Take this as a reference, there are tons more too
Μ81
I’m trying to go far a cold war camo look
so basically you're not far off, you just need more patterning
Nope, i meant what i said. i quit. (i cant talk nor spell apparently. ty!)
The way i would go about painting that camo would be: Base green, big random splotches of brown, small stringy splotches of tan then small stringy splotches of black. Dk how much that helps but hey.
How would to translate that to a guards man figure
Same process
Wait theres a good video that i remember i started with
In this tutorial, we show you how to paint three fantastic camo schemes for your Astra Militarum force for Warhammer 40,000 by Games Workshop. This full-length miniature painting guide shows you how to paint each one in detail. We cover three different terrain and camo patterns for Urban, Desert and Snow. All useful for a wide range of miniature...
I remember i applied similar techniques when painting my things.
Although tbf he didnt show how to do a forest camo.
I got the idea
copy the patterns above as best as possible
If you are airbrushing, painters tape, set it on and VERY carefully cut sections out for what colors you want.
Instead of painters tape, you could use blue tack to better make the shapes or best easy peel liquid latex for watercolor.
Just free ball it
and not care about the mistakes
or just paint over your mistakes with a brush later
naw, thats what professionals do
Superglue generally regular plastic glue doesn't really affect resin from what I've found
Also don't stress if each detail on each individual splotch aren't 100% right away, other people aren't agonizing over every brush stroke the way you are when you're painting: they're just taking in the composite effect of the paint you've put down
oop wrong reply lol
you're not wrong at all
Knocked my "desk" and sent everything flying, genestealers made a valiant effort to keep each other alive lol
What would be the best way to gapfill on a resin model?
how big's the gap?
UV cure resin, epoxy putty, super glue, etc
Moon shine
My DK kill team are coming along nicely
@plush swift I'm looking to pick up a brand beige that looks like this, any suggestions? I've just been using white paint stained with a heavy seraphim sepia wash
What did you use for the under coat
I mean, my first recommendation is always to mix it yourself, its basically just white with something like tau xv69 or w/e it is. its white with yellow ochre effectively.
but a few decent brands make aa convenience color beige like lukas.
example
you dont need everything there to mix it, just close enough
there is that beige chart
and here is the website if you want to see and experiment on your own
just swap it to single pigment
their burnt seinna is fantastic for rust effects
Interesting im glad if wasnt a dud purchase
Thanks for the site I'll be taking a gander
Corax white
I meant the fatigues
Love the snow theme
Tyvm!
Leggys
naw, a lot of things from them tend to be incredibly useful, some have niche uses cases like ultramarine violet but when you need them you need them
What terrifying abomination is this? (Amazing work btw)
its very good for modiying colors too, its a mainstay on most palettes
Do we have any greenstuff magicians here
yes
Whom
me
Real?
yes
Winter clothing type fur
Like ushanks and fur cuffs
Ushanka
Also if you have any advice on getting the bedroll across their chest to look better im all ears
the two ways I would personally do that is to grab something that has a rough texture and just apply it, anything from super crinkled up tin foil to a very stiff brush.
The other way I would do it is more tricky and has to do with using a metal dental hook by doing a poke and minor pull almost directly next to each hole you maake
if you have something with a plastic grip that has texture, that can work
i mean, I just make a flat sheet of the stuff then roll it up and apply it
Thank you
Oh yeah i was doing that with my citadel sculpting tools (obviously not correctly) but I'm glad i was on the right track
Looking to build a removable roof for my modular third party gothic buildings, do you guys think cardstock would support the weight of miniatures?
If not, any suggestions?
@plush swift apologies for ping, but is there a way to remove very old and cured green stuff from model?
nail file?
it doesnt adhere very well so you can technically just peal it up
yes, it can. But plasticaard would be better
PLASTICARD is what i meant to say instead of carstock lolll
Thats funny thanks
But yeah these dont read how i thought they would
Sniper is supposed to have a poncho the spotter is supposed to have heavy parka hood and mittens
Does this read better as cammo
Death guard bloat drone
Your patches are too large but it’s getting there!!
Looks like you’re doing British standard camo right?
Here’s one painted the other day for my eliminators. My recommendation is to start with the light colour and move down but whatever works for you
Actually i suppose vehicles will have larger patches hm
Thank you!! Yours is always amazing too!
Realised a little too late that making the dead marine for my friends tfex base into a blood angel would kinda cover up the gore element but oh well
It's meant to be like a tribute for a friend of ours who passed when we were in highschool who collected BA
Incredibly grim, but we both appreciate it lol
Got some new blue highlight paints and feeling nice about em
No, the red throws it off
I want to paint an order of lazarus-themed army, which were a crusader order of knights of healers and later warriors. Since it's a whf army, I want to replace the green cross with a green symbol of shallya (a dove with a key in the beak). However, I can't freehand for shit, what else could I use (that's simple shapes, easier to freehand) to replace the dove? Or how could I represent that dove and key more easily?
also comes in white
Stencils and an airbrush could also work, but tranfers for the dove are probably easier
I've been looking at different ways to seal cardboard, I've seen wood glue and mod podge, does anyone have anything else or a preference?
I would eat eat tbh
Those two will be the easiest and cheapest options to use, the best is a conservation material but its expensive and unless you know what you're doing, you'll probably poison yourself with it. You also have a few other things but they tend to make the cardboard hydrophoic so painting them wouldnt work well
If you wanted to airbrush something, I would thin down PVAc glue(wood glue) with distilled/deionized water, not tap water because there are no fugicides or biocides in that glue so it will mold over if you use tap water
"primers",gessos, acrylic paints, etc would all seal it too technically but its always good to put a different layer down first
I went with mod podge because I had it on hand and it feels decently solid
230 skulls for the skull throne
Been doing a single color a painting session to stretch these fun fellows out. Really happy with Lumberghast and absolutely hate how vulgar and fleshscreamer are coming. Hoping once I do the metals they’ll get better.
My completely lore inaccurate Emperor's Champion
Ohhh I just realized the additions you made
Tbh I have been incredibly tempted to do this but stop around the 50-60 coat mark so it looks like a T1000 from terminator
What you use for that yellow?
that yellow is gorgeous HOUH
Deathwing Knight stripped of DA Heraldry for my carcharodon army
that is some sick ass weathering on the shield omg,,,
Homeboy’s been in some heavy scrapes
Averland Sunset (base) - Cassandra Yellow (shade) - Yriel Yellow (highlight) - Flashgitz Yellow (edge highlight)
How'd you get your averland so smooth?
Mine has been a distint pain
Wraithbone primer
I'll have to give it a try
It's the one thing putting me off painting Craftworld Iyanden
Yeah since that Primer came out it's been much easier for me to have a consistent yellow
Yeah I def want to paint some Iyanden
I'll have to grab some and give it a go, I'll need to get some new Averland, mine is royally buggered
Also look up Cult of Paint's Iyanden video. Has a nice grimdark to 'Eavy Metal feel
I've had my Averland for years and it's clumps after not using for a while but I use a vortex mixer to smooth it out
If it's clumping up like that you really need to get some wetting agent, That's an agglomerate caused by improper dispersant.
Thanks for the tip! Honestly I just use the vortex mixer and it comes out smooth again. But something I'll look into
You can put a single drop of something like a flow improver that contains an alcohol ethoxylate, most common is windsor and newton.
Dont use vallejo, they use 2butoxyethanol which isnt a flow improver, all it does is make paint dry out.
Get that shaken for like 5 minutes straight lol
Im starting to hate my Rakarth personally
||or get a good yellow from a professional brand and never have to deal with all that bullshit again||
True!
Made my lieutenant better. (After is first 4 and before is last 4
Russ in progress
Finally picked up some pro acryl stuff
Got their ivory to replace ushabti bone and bold titanium white for my clones
I think ive mentioned this before to you but their bold titanium white cracks like a mother fucker all the time for me and never adheres. It dries way too fast
For optimal acrylic stability you want a minimum of a little over a minute for drying time per layer, that stuff was like 15 seconds
and in my climate, that means it will fail regularly
From what I can tell is they put a chemical in there thats used as a wetting aid in there but isnt which also causes it to dry much faster, but I havent done much testing
two thin coats has it too
Vallejo sells it as flow improver, which its not and confuses just about every paint chemist out there
as to why vallejo does that
Russ is always relevant. A valk is a really cool desk model that'll never see tabletop play but damn does it look cool
Raptors are cool and shit, but a big titty Kriegette GF into a mini? Sign me the fuck up!
(my 12th mini this far, am kinda proud of myself ngl)
I would be okay with GW retconning these in
Me too brother, me too...
im p sure unlike fem custodes this wouldnt actually make sense bc of cloning tech
although either way it does not matter tbh 🤷♀️
Tried the new army painter fanatic daemonic yellow
This is one coat
I'm very impressed
banna man
Any citadel paint recommendations for nightlords?
black?
1000 sons blue maybe
Does the emperor have his own model
I think they literally have a color called "Night lords blue"
I think I have it actually hold on
dont put it in sunlight, they use dyes according to several of the people they sponsor who claim they talk chemistry with the company all the time
yea i like it
i was using it too
don't tell corpsey he will get angy though xD
How much did this cost
good amount probably

it was like 130 including shipping for me, I just saw it as a good deal
but corpse knows that all mini paints are a scam
i will say that i have enjoyed them though they are easier to work with for my noob self
then the vallejo stuff i have

many paint xD
Yeah it's a lot but I could never go through that much paint before it debonded
The amount of money youd need to spend/random ass projects you'd need to do to use that much paint as well as the diverse colors in that pack is insane
I’d say a good half would probably never get cracked open. How many different reds and greens does an ultramarine player need?
@plush swift For paints that contain dyes and degrading in sunlight, light from a light bulb isnt going to degrade it correct?
Incorrect, it will just at a slower rate
and its mostly just greens, leave to mix and you dont need 99% of that set since its just mostly them adding white to colors or in the case of green, yellow and/or white
Yeah the only nice part about that is having a "start point" but if you are diligent in your note taking for color mixes its nbd
dont even need to do that as most canvas artists have them up for free, tons of cheap beginner books do too.
Hell you can calculate what the color will be using a kubelka-munk wheel over a cielab wheel
thats both
Painted the warboss, I absolutely love the color
Ended up needing about 3 coats to fully cover however
I'm too dumb to use something like this, I prefer the mad scientist approach with an understanding of color theory
Freehanding is a pain but satisfying when you get a result you like
SO those dots are pigments, each pigment has different charateristics when it comes light absorbtion, how it interacts with light particles, etc
If you ever wondered why when you mix a purple and you get a brownish color
thats why, using the wrong pigments
Using two very common pigments in hobby paint
because most reds you use border on orange and not actually red
the red like deminstraits where it will shift
but using the correct ones will shift it more towards what you want
because some pigments interact differently, the green and the magenta will create a violet, a blue, and a purple
because the magenta defuses green light and yellow light
I understand all of this in theory, but when you apply it with your own paints I could see how this maybe gives you an idea of a starting point but I feel like there are alot of variables that this chart might not cover
it covers everything an artist needs to know
it doesnt cover everything I as a paint manufacturer and conservator need to know
I have to work on the physics level
of course im not explaining all of thise 100% accurate, im making it easier to understand which this is close enough for most people
understanding things like blue has a warm and a cool town, same with red, yellow, and magenta
are important
Yeah I understand stuff like that already, I have a pretty good idea what I am going to get when I mix two paints, and if I don't get what I want I know how to salvage it usually
a warm tone blue will mix a muddy green while a cool tone will mix a bright one
Thats a much higher comprehension than most
it does make you think more when you look at it on the chart though
because I come from a predominately like online color picker background for illustrator stuff, and I was taught color theory at a younger age and had it reinforced through schooling
See thats a huge thing
I have to tutor doctoral students a lot and the ones with direct family with background like that tend to always be more respective and get these obscure concepts quicker
Something I've always appreciated from my schooling was to be taught to figure out why not necessarily what
I wish I had the same, my family is all politicans, military and journalists
so i hate the news and politics
but art was a family passtime and always highly encouraged
its definitely something I am going to instill in my kid(s)
however me taking a career in it instead of politics or military was... not the choice they wanted
that being said, I was able to get 50k more on my last salary than they listed because I know how to debate
its important for society honestly
If you got the tools, use'm to best fit your own design. At the end of the day you have a better chance of making an impact of "note" as an artist than you do a career military person/politician. Sure you might effect people's lives in a less tangible way but how many politicians do people remember outside of presidents and maybe their senate rep if they do something bad
@silver thorn @mint dove @short pawn @vernal mesa here is some more advanced color theory
exactly. I much prefer to help shape and mold others to attempting to fix problems but being held up by others. I'm patient but vindictive
I find it funny that I have over 100 dollars of unpainted plastic and I have instead decided to work on this project which has less than a dollars worth of material (obviously the plastic for minis is cheap as well but it's not like you can easily make a mini out of raw plastic)
tbh this is more entertaaining for me
This is my first larger scale “mini” any recommendations for filling the back and mechanical sections so it’s not so boring??
The occasional small pipe in brass works well, kinda like this
For the most part it’s going to be silver, due to the monolithic scale of the model
Im doing two terrain projects while also painting a kill team. It's fun to hop around and focus on what draws your interest at the time. As long as you go back to the plastic eventually it's all good.
Woohoo, pretty wheel with actual color names I can easily reference! || (Was mixing a dried blood last night and had to get the s.o.'s eyes to tell me I hadn't made a red with brown, but just brown.)||
transparent iron oxide is your best friend here
Really happy with how the shield turned out
ok ty ty i like the idea of the red pipe you have on there too
Thank you, it’s all just electrical and hydraulic cabling at the back
Another good thing is to do the plates on the back the same colour as your main armour, (you can see it with my blue)
i had all mine in black but i like the idea of different color and ok ill try paining the back part of the plates
Tried painting my clones today. I give up
It's so difficult to paint black details on white armor and clean it up seamlessly
It made me so frustrated it made me want to drop painting altogether for a second
!
I paint like 1 model every month and you paint squads on squads on squads haha
no way youd give it up
These are awful
Lots of black recessed detail and the paint just runs everywhere
Base paint, contrast paint, black panel liner. Doesn't matter. It gets all over and cleaning it up looks terrible
Some things just shouldn't be miniatures
See you made a major mistake here, a massive one
dont use black to give white panel details
its too dark and will always look bad
I mean more of the undersuit areas and helmet visor which are stark black
And it's less what color it Is and more cleaning it up always looks like shit
oh then krill tissue
yeaah thats fair, but you can take steps to help
Trying to get my dark angels together but keep procrastinating
After letting my sentinel roam free for a few weeks finally got around to basing it
Also made this little lad last month for my local wh store’s st paddy’s day themed contest with the mini of the month
THATS HOW YOU PAINT THE NOB AT THE BACK????
i mean you can paint it however you want, there is no wrong there
Ik
Just didn’t know what the nob thing was
It’s great, I even did the same for my tiny knights
Made my primaris ATV
The Mario kart double dash marines, fuckin love it
My favorite primaris vehicle by far
Tbh I feel sorry for the driver
"What did yo- BRRRTTTT"
Alright chat I need opinions
I've bought inner circle companions and I'm using them for my carc army, stripped the DA heraldry off of them etc. etc.
but what colour should the cloaks be
@rare hornet ideas?

This is depressing.
I got so excited, thinking we are getting some darktide models 😦
No. Unless the zealot one is new
idk though
This is so damn disappointing.
I mean It's an easier way to get Vorne
as he's a hard one to get a hold of
and they ARE cosmetics in-game
Man, i wish we got the cover 4 from darktide as models.
When seeing that vid in my feed and watching it made me go through a rollercoaster of emotions only to end up in a hole 😦
Upon my mentioning of the casual "oh yeah we're updating the emperor's children rules, pay no attention to this haha :)" post by GW to a friend who works at my local warhammer store, he pulled a bit of a face and said something along the lines of "well while nothing's confirmed and sometimes we do just do stuff like that......... you might wanna save up some money"
The store managers are in the dark a lot of the time about what happens in nottingham
