I didn't buy primer with my paint and I didn't buy half of the paints I needed so I put the models together and just.. left them unpainted
This is how my marines are being painted currently
My Storm Guardians with flamers and fusion guns are also sans arms
They're loosely fitted here and unglued
you dont actually need primer
doesnt really do anything special
i feel like that's bait
All you need to do really. I’ve got 4 more marines to paint for the first squad so I’m currently waiting for a chance to spray them black and they’re just legs and torsos
nope, in the testing of over 1400 primers, they showed no major changes between having it and not
The few that did do something, were either not for consumers(IE Toom) or horribly gritty and caustic
There was also next to no change in the chemical structures of surface primer or acrylic paint
true primer tended to melt polystyrene plastics
Listen to Corpse Starch. He is the Paint Master
If the paint isnt adhereing to the plastic, its either mold release agents from you not washing them, the paint binder was destroyed by adding water, or its a very low quality paint
IE AK gen 3 failed the majority of tests
Its pigmentation and water content was too high for the binder to support it so it failed over 200 adherences tests
Golden is real good stuff
The best hobby paint tested was Ultracryl, but thats not for public sale just yet, The worst performers currently are Army painter Fanatic, AK Gen 3, Scale 75, and Ammo by mig iirc
I picked up my first bottle of it by happenstance
The best paint tested was Golden(unshockingly), followed by liquitex, holbein, turner, and two others I cant remember
Yes, GW actually did well in testing, but this like most of the ones that did well, are chemically identical to acrylic house paaint
doesnt however make it a good paint
it just barely got a passing grade
ehh, im an amateur, I just seem like an expert or a master compared to most people
My knowledge base is tiny compared to actual experts
You're certainly a godsend for all of us unknowledgeables
tthey have a youtube btw
Neat
they have tons of great things like this
Artist Esther recently asked if it's possible to rehydrate dried up paint. While there isn't a way to save acrylic paint that's totally dried out, you might be able to rescue paint before it's too far gone. Mike explains in this video.
Another option for artists painting in hot, dry conditions is to use a slow-drying acrylic like GOLDEN OPEN.
...
the way they do it is incredibly different compared to most hobbiests
most think adding medium can save the paint when it doesnt
it causes more problems
What do you use?
I use the same recipe as in that short
Someone pin this
pretty useful isnt it
@hasty sorrel Pin the paint video, please
i'll check with peeps before i do, unsure we can suggest the use of ammonia on a public discord
Ammonia is a completely legal substance and in the amounts being used, its not harmful. Spray primers are generally way more harmful due to the acetone in them and other chemicals
so it shouldnt be a problem
but discord is discord and you never know with them
Tamiya primer gets me high as fuck
wear a mask
Yo so theory crafting my ksons list for next game
Does anyone know if I can use Umbralific Crystal to take a sorcerer off the board + Rapid Ingress to redeploy it on my opponent's turn?
That's certifiably dope, been a cool process to see
So it seems like, that we have in EU/Germany some restrictions on ammonia(-nitrate) in case of climatic themed rules/laws as also in case of ammonium nitrate can be used for explosive stuff... So it seems to be that not every private person may use that stuff here..
I'm not 100% sure cuz i haven't digged deeper in search...
Probably not that high res, and the paint was still wet, but I’m getting started on my second plague marine set!
Also WAY too much nuln oil 💀
void dragon completed 30 mins before his game 😅
Well thats that all built now to prime them and then paint them
nice
ammonia nitrite is very different, household ammonia is ammonium hydroxide
Took a shot at a rubric marine. Not sure if the highlight blue is too bright.
Have fun with the sentinel they suck to paint
Yeah and still there it seems like EU/Germany has laws on who may uses it in case of enviornmental/climatic pollution... So as said, i'm not 100% sure but there were some governmental papers as pdf data that said something about it being somekind of restricted....
So i digged a bit deeper... ammonium hydroxide seems to be something we may own, but nearly any EU/German page suggests not to use it in closed/very good ventilated rooms... Seems like when it evaporates it could set free massive amounts of ammonia which are harmful to health...
So i wouldn't really use that stuff in a private cause without having the right setup tbh....
Sentinel was fine to paint tho? (for me at least)
hi guys i would like to ask that is every loyalist space marine what gw releasing have same size? (excluding primarchs)
Horus Heresy or 40K?
So in 40k there are firstborn and Primaris Marines... Since the Primaris are a new "breed" they are taller, stronger and better than the Firstborn...
Currently a Primaris Marine is taller than a Firstborn...
Bc the league devs would have 100000% tried to make this a fiddlesticks skin if the idea of GW's legal department didn't wake them up in a cold sweat
But all this could change somewhere if GW decides to re-release the Firstborn ones (what i don't think they will do)
Can never go too bright for ksons you can reasonably justify any part of them glowing like an RBG strip
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7D8I47GE7Mg
I think this could help out
I received my Imperial Fist Praetors and I can now say firsthand that the Marine scale for Firstborn is definitely changing, I can hardly see any height difference when it comes to them and Primaris Marines.
00:00 Intro
01:05 Old Marine Scale
02:20 Old Terminator Scale
04:38 Primaris Scale
Thank you for watching my video, glory to the Emperor ...
thanks gonna check it out
The answer is yes but there's two halves. Older marines (Grey knights and thousand sons I think are the only ones left over from this lot who don't have updated scuplts) are on a slightly smaller scale and looked sorta goofy in comparison to other things.
Any new marine sculpt released after like 2010 (I think that's around when they started doing primaris) will be on a bigger scale and they justify it in lore as them being better made space marines
So if you're buying older minis double check if that particular set is firstborn or primaris bc it can cause issues with having bits fit together when kitbashing
thanks
Current wip on rotary gun dwarf xD
@plush swift will I get a similar effect to the GW gemstone technical paints by just mixing other paints into a gloss medium?
probably, I dont know those paints well
the amount you need for it to be harmful is quiet a lot, its good to not breathe it in but urine tends to be about the same. You're not spilling gallons of it everywhere, you're using roughly a max of 10ml.
A lot of the EU stuff is weirdly worded and makes things sound worse than they are, keep in mind germany keeps trying to ban titanium white because you can get get cancer from it if youre stuck in an enclosed room with a high volume of it for over 8 hours
they fail each time because there isnt great data on it being super dangerous past the whole neurological damage thing which.... just wear a mask when air brushing it and it removes that risk
Yeah like Corpse said
Europeans are pansies
i know there somekind of clear material you can apply to minis after youve trimmed or shaved parts off of them to smoothen out the cuts and scrapes. but i cant think of what its called. anyone here know?
sure its not green stuff?
no i remember seeing it in a youtube video
its this clear liquidy material that got brushed over the scrapes
also anyone know what this model is called?
Beast Snagga Warboss or something.
Hey, so im using GW technical agrellan badland, can i use water to make it flow better into recesses or is that a big no no?
I think so but the cracks might not appear as well or at all to the thinned areas
Or was it the crackle paint or just a terrain paste sorta deal, can't remember from the name
If it's just the terrain texture without the crackle medium that is perfectly fine then
Yeah its not a crackle paint. Thanks!
One more thing, do you have an idea of how long it takes to dry? I know its a lot longer than paint but im still not 100%.
Agrellan badlands is a crackle
I usually wait for 2 to 4 hours or so if I do paint it during the same day I applied it
Usually I just apply it at the evening and paint it the next day
It’s a thicker chunky crackle, but it’s still a crackle
Right so thinning it with water might not work well if you want the crackles to appear but it won't ruin it or anything
Alright thanks everyone!
You say this, but Praetorian Fiddlesticks exists
When I first opened this chat I thought that was a cookie
The forbidden peanut butter cookie
Bretonnia boxset is here! Arrived during work
You mean nuln oil on rocks?
Jealous, was thinking of buying the bretonnian lord on pegassus just as a hobby project
hes not being sold alone yet
when I was like 7 my uncle gave me a black and white paper rulebook for bretonnia and I thought it was pretty cool
I didnt play warhammer for over 20 years but it definitely makes me have a softspot for bretonnians
Jokes on everyone though, gonna try and do an English Army. Alot of bows and little amount of Cav
Men at arms too, main focus on men at arms and bows
Ebay is your friend, kinda. Hunt for the keep boxes, found one got £26 and bid went to £150
Do it
Doo it
The emperor wills it
Bought some Perry miniature, English infantry. Amazing proxy for bretonnia!
Box of 40 models for like £22
Sounds about right, pain
You buy it then?? For the emperor?
For Celestine?
Some templar progress
Im gonna have some self control and not buy it. 🙂
Im also thinking of buying 100 bucks in paints too which I shouldnt either haha
I love the shoulder plate
the color transition from the edges is so good!
Thank you! It started out as me wanting to pin wash or recess shade and I made a mistake so I just smooshed the agrax around abit 😅
Looks fucking badass my guy!
You have betrayed us sister, repent -_-
I am always repentant, for evil still stirs in this galaxy. 🤡
Also they deleted the memes channel.
Honk.
They did??
Yea months ago lol
Ah
It got really really shitty
Skill issue?
lots of politics and nsfw made it a pain for mods.
Dark humour?
Ohhh
I know it's dark tide but let's not make the memes channel darker than the game
But you disappoint the emperor, sister
I must have self control. For ze lady.
it gives it almost a parchment paper vibe which looks really good honestly
it would destroy the rheology modifier in there so you cant build texture as easily or at all
Why thank you, I do hope I can replicate it on the rest 😄
Anyone have suggestions for paints or colors for this captain? IF, but I don’t know what to do for the sword, rope, or half-cape
It is no longer yellow.
A sudden hum in the distance occurs..
Pulling sick wheelies on loyalist nerds
we are taking tactical rock to a whole new level with this one 😄
archaon, black NMM, work in progress. I'm happy, just need to clean the shield up a bit.
spoodr
I may not be able to run ufthak but I can definitely use him as a warboss
Got me a Land Raider for my Black Dragons army
third party, salamander themed
pretty cheap, pretty nice
If only the third party redemptor from this artist looked half as good
Not mine but would be a PERFECT end game boss
absolutely! Can't go wrong with a big ol' tactical rock
this is why i would never use any spray can to prime the model. Absolute nightmare.
... the Nurgling, right?
This is pain.
Doesn't look shook
i prime with spray can buy i do a few things first because i was warned about this
i put my spray cans in very warm water for 5 minutes before i spray
then make sure they are throughly shaken
the varnish turned out terrible though added snow all over the model
luckily someone suggested to apply a gloss varnish over it and it made it look a lot better
or is this just because he sprayed way too much on lol
I thought that was a handful of spaghetti
xD I got little wooden dowels at home depot to put my models on for painting
What colour should I paint my tiny imperialis rhino
Imperial Fists/Iron Hands or Night Lords...
I use rubbing alcohol for about 2 days and it gets of most of the paint
Omg I painted that exact sister like a year ago and the cloak gave me trauma. This was the first time I tried to paint cloth and it did not go well.
I stripped her like 3 times. The only thing that i learned from that is do not use shades on cloth
I tried airbrushing today and it went HORRIBLE lol
idk if its going to work for me haha
it clogged a bunch of times, I couldnt get a good mixture of paint and water
I have an airbrush, i used it like onece and never touched it again.
gonna have to strip her and start over
Working on Dante 😄
For first models those look great! You must do art outside of miniature painting
holy shit trying to thin orruk skin while not basically being a wash is bascially making me insane
im grabbing my army painter
paint
citadel's flat colours aren't as good as other companies'. But generally their brighter and more pastel pigments are harder to control.
I switched to AK and army painter, and I'm waiting on the FLGS to order Pro Acryl.
no, haha. but i am good at watching guides on youtube.
I got a really good deal on the new fanatic range from army painter, the 50 paint range
im excited to try that, i watched a review of it
very high pigment, very opaque
it comes out some time in march
I got their black and white and they work well for what I want from them. I used those, a citadel blue, and two AK greys to paint Archaon.
I should paint today but my airbrush fiasco went so bad im kind of demoralized lmao
This is the way
This is completely user error lmfao
This is like not eating anymore because one time you took a massive bite and choked
that and GW sprays are garbage
Yeah that's not wrong
I have never had a problem with a spray that wasn't my fault
all mine have been temp based
I can conform this dude either 1. Didn't shake the can, used it in too hot or too cold weather or absolutely BLASTED that mini with primer
hell yeah
Awesome, that's almost a mini diorama. Love the casual double tap. Only improvement I can see would be to have a SM as a victim instead of a guardsman 😉
The base was too small for a sm haha! Thanks!
dont use water, try speed paint medium. alot easier to use
1 drop paint to 2 drops medium
or use flow improver
improver can be bought in bulk so abit cheaper
meduim comes in a small bottle but easier to control the amount added
I like spraying my 10 year old can of chaos black in freezing weather and it somehow still works fine

Golden's airbrush medium, its cheaper and superior quality. Keep in mind that if your paint needs a flow improver or anything other than just water to go into an airbrush, thats a sign its a very low quality paint or its a heavy bodied acrylic, which you should probably invest in something like createx instead at that point
what airbrush was it?
Good news: A buddy of mine helped me to fix my aztec airbrush pistols... so when i'm back out of my vacation and the weather is much better, i can start figuring out how those airbrushes work...
Would be fun when i can paint some vehicles with airbrush instead of rattlecans
I still have no idea how those work, they seem like witchcraft to me
Why that?
@plush swift So if i was to take a paint like agrellan badlands and add a bit of water to it, could i affectively use it as a sort of normal paint? (not to actually paint something but to just fill in gaps in a premoulded base)
HYLas rotary cannon gunner done...
I mean it sort of as a joke but that airbrush is still one of the most bizarre ones out there
Not exactly, it has agents in there that will cause problems with it, really crackle stuff should only ever be used straight out of the tub and not thinned
i actually already bought some!
i got vallejo brand, and amazon had next shipping for it
excited to try that and hopefully get better results
it wont give you massively better results tbh, just watch out though the vallejo stuff can make the surface incredibly tacky and if you use too much, the paint wont adhere
Need to touch up a couple details still
you know somehow i don't think that's correct corpse starch, but thanks for the advice
I have several bottles of it here, i used it for years
i know, i know. youre very knowledgeable. 🙂
I had tons of issues with it being tacky with a lot of different paints
I'm just letting you know to watch out
thank you, going to give a go.
Anything past a 1:1 ratio and you run into that issue, if its just the flow improver, dont use past 10%
10% can cause some weird glossy issues on rare occasions due to temperature, not a big deal just if you notice weird differences in sheen
its not a problem, it just dried weird
yea, the water was not working for me. the type of clogging i was having has been solved by many people using some form of thinner or airbrush medium.
as a beginner going for a battle ready paint job just getting the equipment working is a good first step
what air brush was ot?
if it was a masters aairbrush that was an issue with the actual airbrush and not the paint
just a cheap one, nothing to speak of
yeah even my custom made airbrush paint can clog those
Gaahleri is is a cheap brand and really good btw
the $30 I bought competes with $100 ones
also if you have issues with the leveling of the paint, slow down the drying time
seems I cant say what the material you need is
because the word has been banned from this server'
haha what?
ah... reta rdent. yea, part of the word is a slur
yea no biggie i know what you mean
I'll just start calling it reslurdent
which i had to at work anyways
I hate teaching...
art school is bad
you cant even tell people their work is bad anymore
you can legit only tell them how great they are doing
didn't you mention living in the south? just add the southern drawl, reterrdent
I cant do that, I already get told I talk like im black
anything more and I'd get called offensive
wtf lmao
I have issues pronouncing Th
its not in my native tongue
so it comes out as a D or a T a lot
that doesnt seem particularly sensitive of your accent...
Americans
I will say Im in NYC so everything is the opposite of that
my field is anthropology and most of my professors have been japanese
the language barrier is rough
T_T
I'm moving there next year actually
Its cheap for me
there are tons of rent controlled apartments for artists
and rent controlled art studios
afaik its a lottery system though
so not guaranteed
I know a few people with them
You can bypass some of that lottery for the studios
even more so if its a shared loft
good luck!
youll need it, NYC is in the middle of basically the worst housing crisis weve had in 40 years
But I'll be moving specifically to queens and I have a friend who owns a condo with an extra room there
decades of zoning mismanagement and real estate companies buying all the buildings to run air bnbs has crippled our renting system
so cheap rent
nice yes! I live in queens and I keep telling people this is where you should be living if rent is a problem
My grandmother is from queens
its 20 minutes by subway to manhatten but the rent is 1/2 of the expensive places in the city
i pay 1600 a month in forest hills for a studio which is pretty typical.
I pay more for a 300x300 room in this city
Any ideas on kitbashing this as a figure?
I LOVE this armor set
id go 3rd party too
It is triple that for an unlivable apartment in CA 😭
I know a 3rd part thing that does something similar
i have a little inquisition symbol from the rhino kit that I think will work as the necklace no problem
and I can green stuff the cloth hanging from the pauldrons
but the 3 material of breastplate, golden metal abdominal part and then cloth is kind of specific
im going through necromunda and guard models looking for something that will work as a base
I'll need to look but I think it was fallout style space marine
that has a similar torso
Crusader model
Hmm, with some scrapint you could use house orlock shoulder pads and slap it on the robe
Alternatively
Sisters of silence
could work. I was looking at some house orlock models
honestly
I feel like cadians would be a great base except
they have SO MANY BELTS
for no reason
flatten the upper part and paint red for the flak portion
gold for that middle portion
and sculpt the cloth bits
actually kinda perfect as a base, just needs some arms with gloves
scrape the top of the breastplate off and add some shoulderpads
you could also sculpt over it
I have a few extra imafigier heads
I think regular sisters heads will work better though, thats kind of hard style to match and I dont use the helm personally
it does look inquisition af to me though
I ordered a painted set of the old cadian shock troops squad
off ebay
I think its the best base honestly, the belts are and details are simpler so I can sculpt what I want on them
i have extra pistol hands from my inquisitorial henchman box that Ill use with the chainsword
then a battle sister head
kinda excited about the project, its gonna be the most sculpting ive done!
Is that famous society enjoyer the jester?
jomker
honk
honk
trans rights
based
is it a khornate?
My brother in Christ, you are playing khorne
It's a vampire lord
well now he's got a nice snack on his mace and shield
🤣
YES
They are so annoying to paint lol
Bubbles!
Can someone explain to me how shooting with flash gitz works? So ork shooting means If I get an unmodified 6 I get to roll again, well they have "sustained hits 1" in their weapon profile which states a critical hit gets an extra hit.
So let's say I roll 40 shots with the flash gitz, and end up getting 15 6's, does that mean I get to roll 15 more shots AND get 15 extra hits?
If you got 15 6’s, that means you would have to roll 15 wound rolls with those 15, and then add an additional 15 wound rolls. You get to add both to the wound. So like if a squad of Boyz had an ability that gave them Sustained hits, any 6’s they would roll to hit would be 1 wound from the actual dice roll, and then 1 additional hit that automatically goes to the wounds pile. Hope this made sense.
cannon so far
working on a bit of digital planning and kitbashing.........
How do you post images in here, it’s greyed out.
I think you have to be here and be active for a while before you get the role which allows you to post pictures
Gotcha
Little pink Rhino
Very early WIP on possessed for my Night Lords army. Idea is captured space marines forced to be possessed.
that's a clean face right there
So I have some of those tamiya weathering pallets and I want to use it on the custom base I'm making for ufthak but how do I keep the pigment powder from rubbing off? Can I just spray it with matte topcoat?
Is it fine to wash out brush soap into your water then continue to use the water?
Ive heard that but I have no experience myself
gonna be stripping models for the first time this month
Ive got a gallon jug of isopropyl alcohol, Im just gonna fill a plasticware tub with it and use it as my stripping bath
I use biostrip20 and it does its job very well. It does loosen plastic glue sometimes though. After around 1 and a half hours the models look like they were just built. But then again i have not used anything else.
ill take it as a rec then if the isopropyl isnt fast enough for my taste
Do you pour out the alcohol afterwards or do you just reuse it?
So close to finishing my tau army...
Another dreddy in the works
I think the only official GW set I'll be buying after ufthak is the kill team box, because that's just good value lol
Woahhhh- is that the Space Wolf one???
What's that arm???
No this is the one from the black reach set. Modified a little to suit my vision. And it came with a chain fist
Or frag canon depending on which arm you were referring to
Absolutely based
Thxs he shall be a son of Dorn under the Crimson Fists chapter
anyone here ever experimented with home-made wet palettes?
i have a bunch of "parchment paper", but its for calligraphy not the cooking kind people normally talk about. reckon itll work?
parchment is generally only for baking purposes, are you talking about tracing paper?
no, i have that too
if you look up wet pallette tutorials online they all suggest "baking parchment" for the paper
animal skin paper?
as tracing paper is waterproof so wont work
my concern is that the callig parchment will break down or pill in some way and get in the paint
What brand?
Parchment is a very specific kind of paper, its actually similar to tracing paper
Anyone know where you can get those pyramid paint storage things?
Which stack them on a stair case
Kitbashed a mek gun out of spare parts
Proper use of Lego in 40k 😄
Tough life for a medic in 40k
Board project planning and gluing stage
is that the kill team walkway terrain
i just ordered a box of that a few days ago
the pieces arent the same, I like the look of it tho
No it's the old mechanicus terrain didn't get the new box
This is just the 1st out of 3 boards I'm working on for 1k-3k games
better void dragon pics 😄
WIP Storm Guardians
How's my first dark angel coming along?
I love that Aquila big dog
@usedcarjockey
Ah shit sry about tag was accidental
Finally redid the display at my new place
Crazy how quick the collecting spirals out of control lmao
This is just my ksons stuff there's like 3 other shelves of kill teams and like 1500pts of tyrranids I'm painting for a friend not pictured
Also still not sure what to do with the Kairics Acolytes I ended up with
Torn between making them into "restored" Rubricae, cultists (which is the obvious but boring option) or just buying a box of exalted Sorcerors and ending up with like 15 instead of 3 and being able to run dumb lists with too many Sorcerors
So I'm really new to painting minis but I started painting my mechanicus army. Thought Thunderhawk blue would look cool instead of red
also I assembled my datasmith wrong lol
you say built wrong I say kitbashed
Don't worry. I glued the flamer fuel tank upside down on my guardsmen, back when I was starting out
Didn't notice until the glue had finally hardened
One great unclean one ready to play
put a krak grenade in that
One? A dozen would be better... And don't forget to bring the heavy flamers...
Just another half finished cultist
very nice!
i believe there’s two more eyes on either side of those
lovely work on the tongue btw
I am now... Think black necrons with grey drybrush and call it a day could be a good choice of opponents lol
love the colour choice. Try to thin your paints a bit more, and i think giving the whole thing a quick shade with some nuln oil would really make em pop
Tounge was the bit I’m the most disappointed in 😂
Progress on the toeless crusader
Why is he toeless
What happened
What foul creature ate bros toes
nah you're talking about the dread, Ketz is talking about the BT dude just above the dread
i was talking about the dread
i think kerts was too because i said its behind the bushes and he said
ohh ok
that makes more sense tho haha
because Caine literally said it was a "toeless crusader"
xD

Could any one help me with the dimensions of a baneblade chasis?
I'm attempting to build a storm lord with plasticard, sprues, and extra bits from a guy.
I had a hard time getting to the tabbard and removed most of him from the base lol
I misread this and thought you said I bet he brushes between thr toes 😂
Yusssss
First dark angel almost done
hey folks been painting some tau farsight (still in progress) and might pick up the tau codex when it releases was wondering if people have any recommendations on what to get next when im done painting. i got pathfinders and xv25 stealth battlesuits
One set of complete Storm Guardians
What's the preferred weapon for mek guns? Smasha gun or kustom mega cannon? The kannon does D6 shots instead of D3 and also has blast, a toughness of 12 and a D6 damage roll BUT it also has hazardous, and a weapon is no good if it blows up the unit
Sounds very orky to me that shit blows up. All part of the game.
Waiting on maintenance bits for my printer but when it's up and running I finally got me a file for the Corsair Prince himself
Another one ready
Oh hai. I saw this on Reddit.
stunning paintjob. Not sure i can bring myself to like the cartoony DG models themselves though
I prefer it more darker than the cartoonie to be fair
Yea partially, took about 1 hour. Contrast aggaros dunes on the whole model, then drybrush ushabti bone, then contrast militarum green for the camo lines- baal red contrast in the lens with ardcoat over it. For the gun glow, vallejo white ink, then vallejo fluo blue ink over it.
Thank you for the answer. I have to keep that in mind for my Skitarii rangers and Salamanders
Ardcoat over lenses is such a good idea, I've got to try that
ooooo, Vindicator
I like it, then again, I added gold parts to my ulthwe eldar, so maybe I am biased towards gold details on black and white minis
Nice crimson fist dreadnought
Thankya, dude tears stuff up on the table top
Good to hear.
Look at kyle
Don't mind him he's just prospectin'
Bout time I got a banner bearer
very pretty
u make me wanna paint crimsons lol
I need some guide to the solar auxilia for Horus heresy army
Dem some propa flashgitz.
are they already completely glued?
My knights have spent too long on naked laser cut wooden bases, finally giving them a muddy makeover
yeah!!
Royal Warden wip
Finally got some motivation to continue some of the army projects I've got going on
His base arrived today
The base rim came out really ugly. Do you think it was caused by me not waiting long enough between layers? (I've scraped it off and redid it and it looks a lot nicer now.)
Fuck the base rim. The rest of the model is to damn hot to not stare at.
The base looks great to me
I love ogryn but holy the non-bullgryn sculpts are absolutely hideous in the face lmao
I feel like Darktide ogryns have ruined them for me because i think i much more prefer when they lean into the threatening more than the goofy. I think darktied walks that line very well.
Sadly I didn't take any other pics but you can still see the rim is very chunky looking. I am still unsure why but the only conclusion i came to is i didnt wait long between layers.
This is an ogre face, I cut the mustache off.
Thoughts on progress on this character so far?
Baller terrain
"I made me rokkit Blue and purple so it hits me mark and the 'umies won't hear it comin"
I swear one day I will get around to actually painting this thing
Until then it's just slowly adding tiny kitbashes and mods
Finished my first tank tonight
Love that camo pattern
Thank you!
I was working on a chimera at the same time but decided to finish this first. Saw a couple leman Russ painting videos that inspired me to finish this one first instead lol
So i have a situation, I have a mini but no base. Help.
Buy a spare base then?
I think GW sells their bases
ebay and amazon also sells bases in like gallon bags
If you have a local GW I would be very surprised if they won't just give you a base. The few I have local to me have a metric ton of spare bases just gathering dust
I got the base for my imperialis mini of the month
Or even email there customer support it’s surprisingly really good
(If it’s GW) or like my local game store has wooden disk in the come sizes for super cheap
You can buy cheap standardized bases on Amazon
Beautiful work on that tank
Lovely camo and impressive work on the mud and rust effects
Thank you! I am really happy with how those effects came out. Was my first time doing the mud splatter effects with a piece of foam so I’m glad it turned out well
It also was really fun just plopping on the mud all over so had to stop myself from getting too carried away lol
Did you buy it new? if your have the recipe you can contact GW and they'll send you one
Nah, i bought it off ebay. I don't think ive ever bought a mini off of gw directly.
doesnt have to be from them directly, it can be from a game store
ebay does count
Your local hobby shop may have bases or something that can be used as a base
If you wanna practice a new technique but you don't want to mess up a good model or base what would you guys do?
paint sprues
strip the model
or I use a canvas
the techniques are the exact same and translate over
Has anybody played a game of legion imperialis?
...play?
game?
you dont play GW games
you buy them and get 80% of the way through painting them
Does it have to be canvas or could I just use this acrylic paper that goes into the wet palette?
Okay so through some stroke of luck I found a canvas, now I can just use my regular old citadel and vallejo and practice wet blending or glazing on this?
I've been playing regular 40k. Legion Imperialis looks cool but the prospect of painting those tiny miniatures doesn't appeal
I'm burning the candle at both ends to get an Aeldari army ready for a match next Saturday
Which might not happen because I ordered two boxes of minis I need two days ago on Amazon and they still haven't shipped
Whereas the box I ordered from GW got to me within 24 hours
Had I known that, I would have gladly paid the extra 20 bucks on GW
To order the other two boxes
Not unheard of. Usually you're able to sort it out W customer support
So explain to me, if im rolling to hit and roll a 6 what happens?
And alternatively if I roll to wound and get a 6 what happens?
Usually nothing special, it’s just a success
Unless the weapons have any special keywords
Like lethal hits, sustained hits or devastating wounds
In which case they can trigger effects
So a 6 is a critical success, like a critical hit or a critical wound.
And sometimes a thing triggers on a critical.
And somethings increase your critical range to 5-6 instead of just 6.
(All it means is that it automatically hits or wounds)
So a critical hit doesn't mean anything unless it has a keyword like sustained hits or lethal hits
Pretty much
Also when it comes to what I can use in combat, I can shoot every range weapon I have but only use one melee weapon unless I have the extra attacks keyword?
So I couldn't hit with my Big choppa and powe klaw in the same turn
Not unheard of. Usually you're able to sort it out W customer support
Anyone got recs for good sprue clippers?
I'm getting sick of my cheap ones
Correct
Unless it says extra attacks, then its one or the other
But every model in the unit can attack with their melee weapon
Repainted my gladius
God hand
A little pricey at $50 or so
But I've used the same pair for almost 10 years and the cut is still so clean and smooth I rarely have to do cleanups
Specifically this one
I'll have to give them a look bc i completely ruined my GW ones from the starter set trying to use them to clip down on metal and resin and now they're like duck-billed at the ends
And my other cheap ones just suck to use
gw makes some of the worst clippers ive ever used
swear to god, first time you use these, ytheyll blow your mind how good they cut
but on that note,
ONLY.USE.THESE.ON.PLASTIC
I cannot stress this enough
resin is a maybe
but the blade is so fragile itll shatter on anything harder than normal plastic
you can use that yeah
yes, now keep in mind glazing is something those paints cant do by actual definition of glazing. the chalk makes glazing very difficult with them
higher opacity base means you dont actually glaze with it
resin is a no with these
tested it, they snapped
tamiya clippers are actually good
yes, im saying a hobby product is good
I use godhands and tamiya clippers mostly for plastic and resin, for metal I use lindstrom
i use random ones i got a local hardware store when i was replacing a wall outlet in my apartment
Do you guys have any methods to cut up thick plastic such as this?
Never thought I'd see the day
If a product is good and I cant find a cheaper soluation, I will say its good. A lot of tamiya tools are also made by olfa too
Iybraesil Autarch

is this a proxy? Looks very nice
I wouldn't recommend doing what your username implies. The first thing that comes to mind is a hobby saw
i WILL chow them down to size like a beaver
Insane. Out of curiosity, how long does something like that take to paint?
Also my local store was out of 40mm bases 😦
razor saw
Thanks! Been a long standing project over the past few years, so hard so say. But 30 hours perhaps? maybe more, maybe less.
I do wonder what ya'll workstation looks like. This is mine.
not seen in the picture is the multiple shelves filled with painting supplies
I think we are actually hitting close to 30k paints in the closet alone now
keeping a mouse and keyboard near paint and possibly extremely hard to clean products
I applaud the boldness
thats a cutting mat
My workstation is a low wooden side table I made in highschool over a decade ago with a cutting mat
I sit on a pillow
I've been thinking about getting a cushion
I keep all my supplies in a small plastic three drawer organizer
An absolute mess 🤣
When I move into a bigger place, I intend to get an actual desk
A comfortable place to sit and a good light is basically all you need, but whatever works for you is most important 🙂
Sitting on the floor makes my knees hurt
And my legs go numb sometimes
I deal with it right now because I don't have a choice but I'd like to improve it in the future
godamn, and all i have is a small corner of a table lol
you should get the chair I have, its very comfortable
Just got a little red on my sulfur pups
Same, i just move my keyboard forwards a bit lol.
im rethinking the blue color scheme on my ruststalker leader
i use thunderhawk blue for tech priest robes with this scheme and macragge blue for the darker metal but idk man
i need thinner brushes or smth
I like all the colors on the one with the combo weapon, my lore for him is that he's trying to work up to being a flash git
Nob squad #2 coming along nicely
You might try playing around with lights, eyes and swords instead. Change the red to something a bit brighter, vibrant and/or warmer like orange or magenta. Just to break the coldness of the blue.
The scheme is based off a dnd-like game I played with some friends wherein the admech are blue with orange eyes and I actually do prefer the orange details but the paint set i have didnt include orange lol
this was my character (thinking of painting a tech priest dominus to be his proxy in my army lol)
Thats cool 🙂 I went the easy route and paint mine in (more or less) classic red, with green necron-ish lights.
Now dats a proppa ork from a proppa clan
Just don't overdo it. Too small will hold less paint and dry faster.
As my late wife used to say: "Its not the size that matters. Its the tip" (Ive never gotten close to speaking with a woman.)
A fun little 2v2 game from a WH club I run at my school. There had been a cadian castelan in the middle guardsman squad, I shall let you all guess what happened to him. not a hint but there are actually a squad of infiltrators and an LT in the top right building too, just hidden we got custodies and guard vs Raven guard and ultramarines
The chads and the bananas vs the blueberries and birds
One of these is super cheap at my LGS rn: y'all reckon it would work as a necron deathmark if i headswap it
NGL the first thing i thought of was him yeeting that knife in the sheathe at an enemy
Ah yes, the great and noble warrior for the Greater Good - Shas'o Tra'zin
The feet are a glaring flaw
But go for it
Yeah that was my main thought as well but I think they'll probably not look super noticeable if I paint them like they're metal
I'll probably clip the back toe off too
I had an idea, that I may or may not keep for the future
Basically, an alternate 40k, where knight houses fight in a gladatorial sport, and just like race cars they would have eye-catching colors, as well as sponsor logos everywhere
with little guardsmen/support personel in those same colors scurrying around
time for the Mountain Dew knight to come to the arena
Distant sounds from a certain segment of Lyran Commonwealth space getting ready to get litigious intensifies
Didn't think about Battletech, but it's pretty close isn't it
Indeed it is
Also to be fair I've been playing BTA3062 recently
I had a good Company of 'mechs
Then Ghost Bear took away my stolen Warhawk and my Stormcrow by blowing the crap out of them
And wounded the Kodiak I also stole so severely that it was better off just getting sold as salvage
Buuuut I've bounced back a little. Still want my Warhawk back
Actually
An Atlas mech painted in knight house livery
I like the King Crab more, but I feel like it's not humanoid-looking enough for imperial 40k
an Urbanmech as an armored sentinel?
or more of a Flea mech, urban is too thick for a sentinel I think
Wonderful to see more dark angels
Feels like admech is a bit underrepresented, so here is some of mine
Dude nice! I especially love the bases! How come everyone else is cranking out these sick looking bases and i struggle doing like the most simple stuff. 😦
Cheers man 🙂 I liked yours (one where you redid the rim) from couple days back more. Mine are just some texture paint, two browns and a wash 😉
And I hope to finish theese bad boys this weekend. Princeps is still only primed tho..
I remember my ruststalkers took ages to paint up. Still got the rims to do but knowing me I'll prob never get around to doing it.
Mountain Dew-m
Jesus man, I am lightyears away from this level of painting and precision. I could not do such grey on black highlights if my life depended on it.
TBH with a bit of conscious practice you can get there within half a year
Best way to succed is to fail a 1000 times
Yeah, like Average said, you can definitely do it within less time then you think. I've only been painting for a year and a half. But procrastinating for half the time.
This was my first mini lol. He's precious and i like him. 🙂
I started around June last year, but having a full time job does not allow much time. What you see on the photos are models 4-7 (sicarians), 8 (princeps) and 9-12 (infiltrators). Hopefully will get there someday after a hundred more or so 😉
Left to right - first, second and third model ever. Fully varnished and never to be repainted. Although the varnish frosted on me a bit 😦
admech are cool but expensive
i kindo want to get the horsey-dogo robo boys with cowboy rifles just to paint them :>
Finished the Royal Warden, didn't find my gamer's grass plants but will be adding one of those when I do and then a satin varnish
A friend painted a squad of marines into my homebrew colors!
Not finished, decals and all, but general colors are done.
That’s a nice looking Homebrew!
I love seeing homebrew chapters. Same with really obscure existing ones.
Yas! Sons of Dorn with more of religious approach to life and war, like Templars... but with nigh Salamanders-grade regard for mortals.
White Knights, they're called!
Your first mini is always a sacred mini. I tell people to never touch up, redo, or fix their first, because you will want that reference in the years to come
Yeah, 100%
Can't wait to paint one of ones I assembled today.
Was assembling for 5h, made 5 scouts and terminator chaplain.
Would it be a good idea to paint my Fists red and then paint over it with yellow? Not entirely sure about some of the results I’ve had so far, so was curious
Finished my fourth unit (right pic) of the first Tactical squad. It doesn't have to be that perfect yet make it really good in tabletop paint style. WIP - my ultramarine (left). Painting spares does build up my skills and sharing it into my gallery.
Already pre-ordered a few kits.
The temptation is real
Man I wish it was easier to get this sort of nice glowy contrast paint effect in other colours
I've been dying for a cyan version of tesseract glow
That's actually a mix of tesseract glow and Vallejo fluorescent yellow with a lot more of the yellow instead of the green tesseract glow. Think they've got other colours as well
You can get a nice cyan glow with contrast paints by using Frostheart
Frostheart is my workhorse paint normally
Do you need to thin it down? or is it just the sort of effect thats too hard to with no airbrush
Has a guide for doing it
You basically just paint it on and then use a seperate brush with contrast medium on it to clean off parts of the painted area and leave the white parts
Yo that's smart asf
I need to get better with working reductively tbh I tend to use slightly too many layers
Nob squad 2, base coated and partly washed
I started using contrast medium+contrast paint to make it act more like a tint than a paint and I really how it looks
Final product with additional basing and runes
I did some base work with a couple others as well
Saw a video today about transferring gw paint to dropper bottles, I hate pots so I wanted to give it a go. The video said to add 8-15 drops of airbrush thinner to get all the paint out of the pot, but won't adding thinner to the paint in the pot make it less usable/last not as long?
Don't think so, you need to thin them down while painting anyway. I transferred mine with thinner addition and they still work well.
Some paints might just require a little more than 8-15 drops.
And don't forget to add mixing balls 😉
Never do lol
So I want to try to make some chipping on my nobz, I've never attempted it before, would It look good to stipple on gunmetal on the edges of the armor then make a mixture of black, burnt umber and orange to make a rust paint then go back to where the gunmetal stuck to the armor and paint that on to simulate rust?
The armor is averland sunset with a badmoons yellow glaze over top if it matters
My approach for chipping rust is normally a base of burgundy+brown mixed, then half mixing a gunmetal and bronze together and kinda stippling with that and than drybrushing with Vallejo rust afterwards
I also tend to kinda pin shade with nihilak oxide also
But that's more BC I can't handle things not having at least a little colour
That's a nice colour scheme
I kinda wanna do my next batch of marines as Helldivers
i heard GW has low quality paints. where would one starting out in the hobby get better ones?
Vallejo game colour, army painter, two thin coats range
those are the ones that come to mind
GW aren't inherently bad in quality but they aren't cheap for the amount you get
man chaos knights are so tempting but i'm not sure i'm willing to spend 3x the money for my first model
yes
there's no waay this is $600
Yes there is
absolutely 0 way
that makes the full piece's $325 price kind of reasonable
to a certain degree
but double that for just the torso?
How about the hierophant bio-titan
correct, and she's the big one. The largest imperial knight model
for the titan and the bio-titan i'd understand the price
not a double for just a torso but i'd more than get it if they were like $400
but $600 for just the torso is outrageous
i'm looking at these sets for my start. i like all of them and all of the factions about as much
https://www.warhammer.com/en-EU/shop/kill-team-necron-hierotek-circle-2023
https://www.warhammer.com/en-EU/shop/kill-team-hand-of-the-archon-2023
https://www.warhammer.com/en-EU/shop/aeldari-rangers-2022
https://www.warhammer.com/en-EU/shop/kill-team-blooded-2022
any suggestions from more expert builders/painters on which i shouldn't do?
A kill team is a great start for painting, and for playing if you intend to play
it's essentially a boxed, playable team in one go,
Hierotek circle is a scam
You're always going to be short several immortals or deathmarks
Blooded too from what I've heard you pretty much have to buy two boxes to actually play the team properly
You could probably get away with building all deathmarks and proxying royal wardens as immortals bc they're pretty cheap and plentiful
i live in a backwater town in a backwater country. i'm not playing the game for years to come. playing a set is not my focus
That's what I did, but yeah the box itself is designed to not build everything you wanna have
then honestly, pick what stands out to you the most
Necrons are the easiest to paint imo
Blooded are probably the hardest, unless you want to get good with skin
Also y'all with flying bases, are you meant to just treat the model as if it doesn't have a base?
Never had to deal w them before
at some point i'd like to make repentias which i want to abstain from rn since faces and skin so maybe blooded are the way
while painting?
Nah in game they have weird clear bases
couldn't tell you if i tried in this case
And I'm reasonably sure I'm meant to treat the mini as if its floating in place and not using the base
3D printing has entered the chat
Anyone else that takes ages painting a single model, do you have a thing where you start off loving it and having a great time and the longer you take to paint the model the less you want to continue or is it just me?
it's a good idea to change up the areas which you are focusing on to keep it fresh
like finish one leg fully, change to torso or something
you'll see more results when you work through it and it doesn't turn into a chore
finished overlord and technomancer
Ooo, the new phase shift overlord? That's an awesome model. Love the red/orange energy

oh yeah
Man i really want them to do more upgrade kits. I would love to see one for just space marines in general, not any specific chapter. Would love to get some primarisifed retro helmets and armour parts.
Like imagine hetting a Mk5 like this in an upgrade kit. I would love to see it.
KILL SLAUGHTER DESTROY (legally distinct to kill maim burn)
Made these out of an old jeep kit what could I proxy them as?
ORKSORKSORKSORKSORKS WAAAAAAAAGH!
orks using ww2 tech is extremelyf itting actually, probaly any of the hjunk yard cars
Can someone tell me what base size the buggies use? Is it 150mm or 170mm?
Which ones?
The Rukkatruck Squigbuggy?
If so it's 150 x 95mm Oval
If it's the Warbuggies they don't use a base
Alright, what about the shockjump dragsta and boomdakka snazzwagon?
Both 150 x 95mm Oval
My plan for both of these is to "ork" them up a bit, I'm getting some 3d prints soon and will have extra wheel and tracks and spiky bits to make them look proper looted
I want to make one of them into a rukkatrukk squigbuggy, but seeing as I can't fit a cannon onto the jeep I'm going to have some bombsquogs 3d printed and have them running alongside the car
Because 150mm is ALOT bigger than I thought
These look great. Did you prime them in grey?
start black prime
That's what I love about them, every kit is an ork kit
that's like saying "every machine can be a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough".. which to be fair both are entirely true
✅
Would 3:1 contrast medium:contrast paint make it behave more like a wash?
no
you need to thin it, not extend it
So just regular ol distilled water?
I can turn that into a Baneblade
did you airbursh for the glow effect?
Been really struggling to get the red glow right on my cron kill team
nope all dry brushing!
i just dry brush from the source away from it
so from one of the overlord's back orbs
put the brush there then pull away from it
Hmm I'll have to retry bc mine didn't seem like it worked
Actually tbf I've also tried to make them as rusty as possible so I may have to tint the glow slightly to make it work
I'll have to look up pictures of how the light changes when the metal is rusted
fair enough
for dry brushing in general just check to see h ow much paint is still left in ur brush before you go at it
I have a feeling I might need to make the glow read a bit more orange for it to make sense as OSL
Oh yeah drybrushing is like my favourite technique I do it wayyy too often
Sprues work great for kitbash reinforcement >.> Just sayin'
Me with two full boxes of sprues waiting for the perfect project
I should make some sproot
They needed more spiky bits
Meet my boomdakka snazzwagon and rukkatrukk squigjeep, complete with passenger seat squig!
all my crons re dry brushed
its great when you dont do your entire army in 3 days

remember sprue necrons are legal
Oh yeah, 1000%
Well, 8 years and over 300 model kits, my God hand finally gave up the ghost
Rest in peace sweet soldier
Oh I like that grass. What did you use?
Does anyone know of any instances where someone has successfully used spru-crons or Sproot in an official tourney?
Trying to find on google but getting basically nothing for results
I don't think so. They have rules with "all miniatures in your collection must be fully assembled" meaning even space marines without shoulderpads aren't qualified
Their rules say they should look like the unit, have the correct loadout and each component present and kitbashes will be checked by organizers
I can see so many ways they can reject
Still debating on my color scheme. I like the grey armor and red highlights on the panels but I don’t know if I want red or blue lenses. I’m also wondering if my edges are too bright. Any thoughts?
I agree that the edges are a bit bright. You could maybe also add some chipping to the armor. Bringing in another color via the lenses would be a good thing, so my vote is blue 🙂
So like a slightly darker grey on the edges? And then dab at model with either brown/light grey?
I mean, I'm just a random dude on discord, right? But, yes, I would tone down the edge highlights and reserve white to only the most exposed points.
For chipping it depends on your taste. Brown to me means dirt. If you want to show that paint has come off, it could be grey or metallic underneath.
GW calls their "new" guardsman models "cadian". Isn't that basically the same as if you were to take a space marine box and call it ultramarine although its not specifically ultramarine? Idk why this bothers me lol. Surely it should just be called something like Guardsman shock troop instead of being called Cadian shock troop.
Also very random but i was watching an unboxing video and the transfer sheet had raptor insignia? Why? I just thought that was so strange.
I just got a new box and went to check and mine has them as well.
Not really, since the models are based around the Cadian design
I think GW is pushing them more due to there more modern military paint scheme
These raptors
You can paint them however you want, but the design is still inherently Cadian
But if you were to take a random ass regiment of the guard, they would most likely look like cadians but also have nothing to do with them. Right? So why is it labelled as cadian?
You could alter their lore to say they’re Cadian inspired
I need more chainswords in space marine kits
especially the fancier fellows
Had to convert my bladeguard into chainsword users
Terminators can technically have chain swords
GW are apparently pushing Raptors pretty hard lately they must be a super popular chapter or smth
I think the lore explanation is that basically cadians are so renowned to be the first defenders against the eye of terror that a lot of regiments copy their gear and tactics
its there paint scheme its very simple and modern military looking may just be trying to tap the milsim and tacticool guys a bit more
not the worst move and they do look good
The bird head is also a very common symbol for Chapters, so although they're specifically for the Raptors you could use them for White Consuls or Astral Hawks or Black Consuls or Emperor's Storm or Iron Hawks or Liberators and people probably wouldn't notice the difference on the models.
Nice
So it's not necessarily the case that GW are promoting the Raptors, it could just that it's a very generic symbol that can be applied to a lot of different Chapters.
they also put out a speed painting video on th raptors sp may be both
