There are a few ways, but its going to be easier with single pigment paints, so you'll be forced to use fluos if you want to use hobby paints, and those fade very quickly

So if you're painting with contrast paint and you get a base paint on a spot you painted with contrast how can you clean it up? Because it's not thick enough like a coat of base paint

People definitely exaggerate and a lot of the more active people in here are all long time hobbyist and you tend to get a little snobby after a while (justifiably most hobby paint is actually sold at scam pricing and quality relative to other industries)

Citadel paints are useable for sure, most hobby paint is perfectly fine to use. But the difference in quality between corax and a truly nice paint is night and day

It's like playing a shitty guitar: once you get a nice one you can't go back to the shitty one even if you sounded fine playing it

Chalk can do a lot of really good things to a paint

The difference is is that when people talk about it they don't call it chalk

They call it calcium carbonate or marble dust

Kaolin is literal satan

Anyone who says kaolin is a good pigment needs to be locked in a mental facility

I absolutely despise it

Not only is it gritty and awful even when you grind it down to one micron

It forms aggregates all over the paint because it dries the paint from the inside out

The only reason why you would ever use it is if you're trying to make a primer

Because yes a primer is actually in reality very gritty

You're trying to build up as much texture as possible so you get more adhesion, flat primers don't exist, That's just a marketing trick

You need more surface area so that the paint can get into those grooves and that requires having something like kaolin so you have a very sandy chalky surface in reality

Now there are gessos that exist that don't have it, which yes is a type of primer, but those are to prevent absorption from porous substances

I can make a really huge rant about kaolin if you can't tell

The list comes out at exactly 1k points. I'm well aware it's top heavy, but I'm finding I really don't like fielding a huge army of a bunch of high model count, weak units that lose half their models after one shooting phase from my opponent, much less fight phase. My idea is to have the Lion and the Landspeeder stick together and charge ahead, since the Landspeeder can easily keep up with Lion and stay near to ensure he always has Lone Operative. Azrael, along with the apothecary, lead the hellblasters for some serious plasma firepower, always overcharging because they might get to shoot again if they die, and the apothecary can return one model per round anyway. The intercessors touch objectives and follow in the wake of Lion + Landspeeder charge to nab objectives without me having to actively camp them. And lastly, the Vindicare Assassin hangs out somewhere backfield and pecks enemy characters the whole game if they give him line of sight.

I'm still fairly new and this might be a very half-assed list that won't play anything like I'm dreaming up, but asking here for thoughts and feedback. Thanks!

People who play Admech and Votann almost always leave the edges of their base clean and only base the top and people who play chaos factions may as well dip the whole base in their basing paste lol

As I am fairly new at painting (on my 10th model) what paints would you recommend going forward? I have been using GW paint since that's what the paint guids tell me to use.

So I am 100% biased, i am not new to painting and not one of those "ive been painting for X years types" as I have taught at accredited art academies before.

It is entirely based off what YOU are looking for in a paint? Do you want pure opacity for nothing but layering technniques and a bad kind of glaze which doesnt function as a glaze all that well but good enough?
Or are you looking for utility and high quality? Do you want to mix your own colors or buy 40+ of the same color type?

Personally I tend to suggest things like acrylic gouache and golden, but proacrylic fits the needs of some people because they like layering a lot, which I dont, I prefer glaze techniques because I do a lot of sfumato

If you used super glue you can try and freeze the model and the glue ought to give out pretty easily

I dont include those ever as their surface tension prevents them from making good glazes due to most of them having flow improvers in them

a glaze needs to be two things, not have a flow improver, dry much slower than normal paint

normal paint can have a flow improver in it, just not recommended as it can cause build ups around the edges

hence why 2 thin coats is sort of mediocre

Obsidian rose drukhari are part of my hobby pipeline, so I'm trying to figure out how to paint them. The citadel painting guide basically says "highlight the edges 2 times", so it doesn't tell me what to do with round shapes (female kabalites) and large panels (vehicles), as well as how freehand art would interact with panel edges.

For night lords, painting them clean is simple, but if I want to add gore, mud, freehand or chipping on their armour, I'm stuck with a similar question.

Every traitor legion has at least one loyalist successor chapter that either splintered from the main legion pre, mid or post-heresy or was created from geneseed that was preserved from the traitor primarchs so you could plausibly have your chapter be death guard successors (or ex heresy death guard) who splintered away from the main force really early, maybe the heresy tech element could be part of the lore.

Mortarion and his legion liked using the bulkier mk 2(I might have the number wrong) armour and generally refused to integrate new technology into the legion unless it was things like adding thicker armour plating so you could have your lore be that your guys decided Mortarion was a shit leader and defected to the iron hands before becoming their own chapter

I'm trying to break my bad habits like testing consistency on my thumb and trying keep the brush away from my mouth. Keeping my brushes clean made them last long enough for me. when they eventually split I just buy a new one and use the old one for basing and stuff

They look a little more natural as rocks than the measured sheets (those are better for building like rocky terrain and "landscaping" stuff if that makes sense)
