I cant share my canvas work
mini painting work sure
as thats all hobby stuff
That’s what I mean yeah
this was a quick 3 hour job including assembly
its not very good
but I didnt want to spend much time on it
It looks impressive
its not
To me it is
i can show you how I did it
its quick
its taking a technique from the 1500s that a streamer claims they invented and using it correctly
using basic color theory including the kubelka munk calculation
into effect for it
which basically translates into "I didnt base with black or grey"
base with brown and yellows instead
orks are best faction
I hate painting orks
why?
I perfer armor over flesh
you can paint flesh like armor
Hate moght not be the right word
That is true but i mean more thematically than just painting
dkok is also good
2h weapons are always a pain to paint under the weapon.
You did a great job.
I wanna get some auxillary but i also want some drop troops, with the jump packs or whatever they are
He a big boi
daradeo?
Leviathan
ah
The chonkiest dreadnought
What color is this beast of untold proportion gonna be?
The same as his little brother
Damn that’s sexy
Woah what silver paint do you use
Iron warriors with an Agrax wash
Wow i would never bet money on that being citadel
I’ve always used citadel paints
I like citadel paints but I don't really like their metallics. I'm gonna try iron warriors though
Leadbelcher looks like tinfoil to me
Retributor armor also is a fantastic color
If memory serves me right that’s brass scorpion
Retributor gold is also very good and goes nicely with various washes
Holy shit that looks amazing
I can’t wait to do my preator with axe
I’m working on this fuck as of yesterday
Just a heads up take extra care with the cape that things is awfully complicated
Hated putting the cape together
Still got him to do at some point
Miserable time
I think the axe praetor had a worse cape
Yeah
Those three small weird ass pieces
Shoutout Horus Heresy still
Love those guys
But if you can bare with it the result is amazing
Yeah im starting to realize that I just don't know how to use metallic paint lmfao
I’ll have to take a pic of the back of my dude
A base coat helps loads
It’s nothing special but I like how the cape turned out
I undercoated my praetor in chaos black and was sure to keep a decent thinned metal
Thank you
Yur
I'll try that for sure
Often I was doing about 2ish sometimes 3 coats of metal
Still a WIP but lemme take a looksie
Definitely looks unthinned to me lol
Just throwing in the best of the bunch, I don’t really have much more as I really got to sit down and crack on with them
Will go back and do the bases on the older minis but they can wait for now
God i love 30k
30k looks so good, but no xenos
Good shit
These are my terminators next to shit ass
The left one I tried highlights but it turned out horribly
So I have to go over again with the base colors
Cataphractii have a lot to them
Yeah believe it or not I ducked the shoulders up
That’s why they are so low
Hopefully my other terminators aren’t as ass
Don’t worry that’s a very common thing I see done
I want to get myself a Tartaros assault squad of all lighting claws
I’m painting my traitor guard to look like the moebian sixth
Flamer captain
Nice eyes
Ah don't be too hard on yourself, certainly isn't bad
IMO looks quite good infact
Especially from
Model viewing distance
Woah thats sick
Wish there was a proper Lost and the Damned faction in 40k
Managed a pretty cool looking repose for my Commander Farsight. I wanted his blade upright, but the ribbons on the hilt would have been pointing up so I carefully cut the ring off the end and flipped it around. Not a huge amount of work for an awesome result!
You can see what I mean about the ribbons looking at the default pose
Wow very clean fix!
Love the eye on the staff!
Yeah it is, thanks
Looks great
Any time someone makes a CSM with Slaves to Darkness bits it activates the neuroms in my brain
Easily a top 5 faction for me
I'm with you on that 💯
That sorta happened purely by accident
Guys I once again need advice
Which one should I use as a daemon prince for my thousand sons
They're both roughly the right size just not sure which vibe I'm after
This one feels more thousand sons-y
It looks fine, although try and remove the spots where you cut the parts off the sprue
I'm of no help as I'm mainly a chaos undivided guy
Yeah I feel like the wise lil guy feels more on brand
Other guy could be neat if you wanna kitbash your Thousand Sons
The ogroid looks more like what you'd typically expect from a daemon prince tho so was weighing options
Give them more of StD type vibe
Uh that means Slaves to Darkness by the way
Just to clairfy
I do have a lot of extra bird and daemon heads on my dudes in my army
I went really hard on the "flesh changed" vibe
Like imagine giving your guys more bones
And fur pelts
Then that second one would be a great daemon prince
Yeah I might consider that one for my CSM daemon prince when I branch out even
Nah input is needed tbh I get decision paralysis a lot
Fair enough don't blame ya
Building up the bravery to tackle be'lakor...
There's nothing scarier than the first bit of paint touching your big models lol
The holy Grail of minis
Or atleast I think so
Kinda like a milestone thing to paint a Bel'akor
My lord of change has been sitting primed on my shelf for at least 6 months
Yeah or any similar greater daemon/dragon mini
Painting like Magnus or Angron hits a similar spot, tho belakor is absolutely massive isn't he?
Like I know he kinda makes angron looks like a manlet
He's about the same size
Might be wingspan that makes him bigger even then
But I think its the wings that make him look so much bigger
Bc now I'm looking at him those wings take up some space
You magnetize the wings?
Bc transporting him might be a struggle otherwise
Nah I wish I did but I got him for Christmas and excitedly put him together...
I'd almost wanna have him on magnets to the rock and have magnetized wings too so you can carry in 3 parts
Nah totally understand my lord of change has his own special box bc I did the same thing
Wings on big minis are a learning experience lol
YOOO
Yeah definitely finding that out
THAT'S WHERE THAT DEAD MARINE COMES FROM
I've had it sitting in my bits box forever with no idea which kit he comes from lmao
🤣
At the game shop and I need advice boys, I'm torn between a box of blade guard vets, jump pack intercessors, sanguinary guard or a furioso dreadnought. I can only choose 1
I'd always go with what looks coolest
rule of cool dude
if it doesn’t make sense for the rest of your models but looks badass pick it anyways
this was me w/ the lion
(I have yet to play an actual game of Warhammer and do not know how point system works)
whoops ping
Alternatively: hop on the app and see which one gives you the most points in minis
That's how I decide my tiebreakers more often than I care to admit
Bought the dreadnought
Because he looks the coolest
I was gonna go sanguinary guard but they look....old
Yeah I would not be surprised if BA becomes the dark angels of next ed and gets all of their stuff refreshed
They're starting to show their age for sure
Yeah our playgroup recently got given a bunch of blood angels that belonged to a friend of ours who died when we were in highschool
And someone remembers him complaining that his Dante looked old and goofy back in like 2013-2014
Ahh dude that's a bummer
Lol yeah. He really doesn't look very much like "one of the most powerful space marines to have ever lived"
But he certainly do look like the oldest
Yeah it's a bit of a weird experience for me BC I got introduced to that group after he'd passed (partially BC he was gonna be the bass player in a band I ended up filling out that spot) so I never really met the guy, but you can tell it affected everyone else quite a bit
Also dude was a really good painter too most people's Dantes look a lot more scuffed than this one
GK save me….. save me GK
Still fairly new to 40K and just now getting into listbuilding, and someone pointed out I had no “battle line” units in my 1k points dark angels army. They were suggesting I include some as that would supposedly let me capture and objective and then move off of it while still retaining control of it. Upon looking though, it looks like only the basic space marine “intercessor squad” unit gets that “objective secured” ability.
All of that leads me to ask, as a dark angels player currently running the unforgiven task force detachment, are intercessors the only way I can access “sticky objectives” as people refer to it? Or is there something I’m missing here?
Stripy gunboat WIP #2
I'm not sure about that specific detachment, but it's pretty important to have those battle line units
If you want melee focus you can take assault intercessors
You can take the first born Tactical Squads, or the heavier Heavy Intercessors
They may seem pretty plain, but they aren't weak by any means
I can definitely see the value in having some battle line units after looking at them, but am I correct in thinking only the basic intercessor squad can do the sticky objective thing via their “objective secured” ability? The way I was told by someone, they were making it sound like all battleline units could do that, but from datasheets it doesn’t look that way
I keep forgetting how much changed in 10th edition
Objective Secured is pretty different from what I remembered
It looks like yeah, only regular Intercessors have that rule in the Battleline units
Though you should still look at and consider what would work best for your particular list, and what you like the most
Don't build purely for tournaments, the meta changes frequently and these models aren't cheap
My red corsairs project begins soon
What's the best loadout for the furioso dreadnought? Is the librarian version better?
If it matters my primaris redemptor dreadnought has a plasma cannon and the arm mounted chaingun
Shoota boy shoota boy, ye that's him
Looks like he's saying "I have Tachyon arrow or glaive. Choose your death, mortal."
2nd painted model ever but huge improvement over my first
idle thought question - do warhammer tank models have working treads?
I dunno about others, but my Sororitas Rhino doesn't
Ive seen people put rubber treads in a Baneblade and Land raider and control them via RC
Yea, pretty sure you can get DIY kits to give them working treads
@coarse badger
Fancy
Looks super fun, very deathwing heavy.
Lol
oh that is very nice
My first ever sentinel is painted better than all of my space marines
Just doing his textured base now
thats a sign to join the guard
:DDDD
Plus 2 boxes of rough riders a castellan and a singular leman Russ on the way
where commissar
Thats alot
chirstmas consumingspree?
Yeahhhh
Spent money on payday then got an obscene amount of Christmas money that I wasn’t expecting
Means I got a nice starter army for 9th and 10th
thats a nut right there, kitbashed mine from a kriegsman mask, officio pefectus commissar hat and the special limited time commissar body
Oh god yeah
I’ve had my eye on those death korps commissars for years
So this is a long time project I’ve wanted to do
did consider it myself too
The leman Russ is just for the other commissar model to make a tank commander lol
Basically my January and febuary will be busy
Nice! What regiment!
A regiment of my own design though they have krieg stuff, they’re supposed to be guardsman of house Terryn, to support imperial knights
thats a nice kitbash
same treatment for every to be model too?
Yeah pretty much
Martian bases for all
That painted sergeant is actually for a imperial navy breachers kill team but they’re basically gonna be engineers
But I’m really enjoying the build and the painting so far
yeah
actually never gonna play
but the building and painting
AAAh
40k is a drug
😂 well we’ve got the playing covered by indoctrinating friends brother and friend into playing so we have more people to play with
:DDD
Gonna do some small combat patrol sized games when I actually have all of my army at least built
But I got til next week to paint what I have before I can build the rest
My entire army lol
Well i kinda got one friend to tabletop, i just had to make him an army for Turnip28
Just a general Q what size base comes with the Venerable Dreadnought?
Ooo nice
just got scions so i could go kill team with some of my friends
I think it’s 60 or 80mm
That’s why my first unit was a kill team too lol
Many thanks
yeah, ive mostly got veteran guard/cadian
cadians will be my own silly little regiment
and krieg is krieg
silly little collection
Indeedly
very hungry for heretics
A silly little big collection
Ooo nice
Cummissur
Huh, I wonder what regiment he's in
the over memed one
Ah, a cadian

Fantasy is back and big 40k MTO
The base boi
Looks good Iron Warriors?
yep
Ha i knew i remembered the iron look
😄
I really wanna get the Loken and Abaddon mini series thing
I love Loken
The homie
Do yall ever paint minis seperate from bases, islf so. How
Nah I just prime it on the base sloppily base coat the legs then use my texture paint on the base
Thats usually what i do but im trying some fancier tactics with these bases
These guys are gonna be from a highly unstable volcanic world, and so ive got volcanic rock and lava im doing on the base iland i dont wanna fuck it up with paint and primer
If I'm gonna highlight black what's a good color to use? I have night lords blue, dark reaper, stormvermin fur, thunderhawk blue, fenrisian gray, adminisratum gray and in vallejo I have stonewall gray, basalt gray, German gray
I'm painting flesh tearers so I have a lot of black highlighting to do
Dark reaper would probably be a good highlight
The blue tint contrasting the red
Unless that’s dumb
i resin 3d printed and painted this a while back, still one of my favorite statues i made
yep, I need to find this file
Next month i will get my BT badge from starforged... so i can add it on my jacket XD
Holy shit, that's superb looking! I take it some of the texture on the cloak is printed or is it all painted on? 🤯
the texture is printed in
but i did the shading and wear
https://wes_pontes.artstation.com/projects/klOzml
thanks fellas
Awesome work Braz
thank you sah
i also made a life sized power sword and plasma gun
i got a laspistol in the works
and a bolter after
the sword was one of my first props so it doesnt look that great honestly
thanks
Npnp
My last mini of the year done
First and last miniatures of 2023
Poor ultra marine
My friend has ultramarines for Horus heresy so it made sense
Any I technically have ultramarines so it’s fine im allowed to maim them
Oh okay
In particular a first company army
Bird
Is the word?????
I’m not a big fan of Tyranids but damn that actually looks fire
Well the freehand checkers need work
Flesh capes are the ultimate piece of clothing’s
Real
Flesh cape is so good
Scary
yi bud
Damn those look good
Thank you. I spent a lot of time on them, and I'm pretty proud of how they turned out. They're gonna get based tomorrow.
They are already based
Jokes aside do ping me when they are finished
I’m invested
Finally finished my Astra Militarum Field Ordinance Battery today, learned a lot making it.
Decided to be brave...
Damn that’s looking good so far
Question or debate rather is it better to fully build mini's or to leave their arms, weapons and heads off and paint that way? I'm worried about the hard to reach areas (cadians) so any tips would be appreciated
I paint the body and head together, while the arms are painted separately
It makes it easier to paint the areas that face towards the body
Current WIP. I'm liking how its coming along
I've only just recently entered into the hobby, but I've already taken to doing at least heads separately. Mainly because getting eyes on helmets or faces to look good, can be really difficult and require many tries, sometimes even fully base coating over failed attempts to start again. This way if the worst happens and I need to strip because too many layers of paint have been applied, I'm only stripping and repainting a head, instead of the head and the whole model it's already been glued to.
WIP Azrael beside my finished terminator captain (except for his base.) Part of me still feels like I’m breaking rules by not painting dark angels with box art color schemes I know they would be in the lore. But I really like this color scheme better so oh well
funny enough, GW rules actually prefer custom schemes
and tell you to do custom over box art
terminator models seem very fun to paint, id get them if i collected space marines
Almost done
damn that looks cool! Also RIP that poor space marine 😭
Depends on the finish you're after, I tend to lean towards blue horror or something a little more blue or pink tinted BC it tends to support the kind of stuff I paint
what paint did you use for the metal parts
Vellejo Gun metal base coat, wash with Drakenholf Nighshade, dry Brush Gunmetal, drybrush Vellejo Silver.
happy chim year
is mine up to the standard?... gonna be trying to add some kitbashing stuff to cover up the imperfections on the knight gallant which was the first mini i ever painted
Don't compare yourself to me. I have been in this hobby for nearly 20 years. I by no means a Golden Daemon painter, but I have a shit load of experience.
TBH I like what I see, Do some basing work and you've got a competent table ready army
funny thing is.. i considered not putting bases on at all, just so it owuld blend better with any boards i play on in the future
that alot of knights
And i’ve got another waiting to be painted
I'm looking forward to continuing my knights soon
Good morning gamers
Wip (left) next to first terminator painted (right) deff some improvements imo
Glad I finally got a brighter purple to work out as well, fits the mini so much more
Little baby dreadnought
Idk if it’s just me but I don’t like the design of 40k dreadnoughts
The primaris is cool but I really am a fan of old dreads
Knife ear
Real
I agree the Primaris is nice, I’m not hating on them but I just like the more massive suit of armor as apposed to a box
Maybe I’m just weird
Just customizing my tau a little
Now that I need
Is he offering you a cigar
Idk what it is but it was the only arm that worked
Ima say its some sort of drone control thingy
I had to swap barrels to make this arm work since i want the long rifles
Dawg.
Gross
What is that
Tomb kings sphinx
Also new ethereal sculpt
You can also make it this
Dudes take a look on this:
https://www.fauxhammer.com/news/warhammer-40000-combat-patrol-announcement/
Would be just awesome when they do this.
@hearty bear any new blood angels stuff
Announced?
Ye
Lemme check
Nope to both
I'm currently waiting on further details on Horus Heresy Apothecarii...
Want 1-2 for 40k legends Apothecarii
What color you painting them?
Real
Can’t wait to get them
Back armor, brown cloth, and orange trim/ highlights with some grey accents
They just lookin' good and i need some non primaris apothecarii for my firstborn marines
I gotta wait for my airbrush to show up, then i gotta learn how to use it
Real shit
I respect that
I wanna get some mark 3 Tech Marines but they are sold out still
Doubt it’ll ever come back but oh well
One can hope
I currently work a bit on "trolling" a buddy of mine with firstborn BT marines XD
Nice lmao
ye. 1x Devastor squad with 2x lascannon & 2x Missle launcher. And then 3 Crusader Squads (5 minis/squad) with 1x lascannon & 1x flamer/plasmarifle per squad
then some apothecarii added = infinite lascannon spam on Imperial Guard 🤣
The sculpt for them is nice, but since they're pretty old the head on that model barely reaches the shoulders of the new "truescale"
Sadge
I can let some of the height differences pass, but it's just too much on this one
Couldn’t you just improve it yourself though?
I was very disaponted myself
Add some putty under it or something
Personally I think it looks fine
I'm gonne get a primaris marine, and then use the MK 3 Techmarine bits on it
Real
Shoutout Preator
The tech marine armor gives me like massive Shogun armor vibes
I love it so much
I always forget tech marines exist but their one of my favorite looking space marine models
I was also planning on getting a whole MK3 box purely for the purpose of converting to characters and such
Nice dude
Techmarines are my favourite
Agreed
The first HQ I got when I started the hobby
I love the Admech in 40k, I’m trying to learn about 30k Admech from the Horus Rising audiobook rn and a Tech Priest was finally brought up lmao
the old resin 40k one with the four servitors
Every Tech Marine I’ve seen look so fucking cool
THe Admech are also really cool, but you can't use any of the 30k models in 40k. Pretty much the reason I chose SM over them
I don’t play 40k
I want Cybernetica list so bad for 30k
I wanna get some Titanicus shit
The spinoff game, or the actual titans?
I know there’s a starter box set that comes with like 6 knights which is badass
Both
I only wanna get one or two knights for Heresy (outside of the spin-off game)
But I haven't won the lottery so...
Real
Too much money : (
I just recently got the Age of Darkness box so that’s been keeping my occupied these past weeks
Something about the robo arms and slatted armor just does it for me
Agreed
I remember Forgeworld had a "deal" a while ago, where you could get a Warlord Titan, two Reaver Titans' and Two Warhound Titans for $7000
I only paid $6000 for my car
It was also technically a huge discount though
Fair
No biggie just mortgage your house
That in all seriousness are some of the worst units you can field in a game
The only knight that interests me right now is the Achreon or Questoris
Aren’t knights so high in points they are borderline unusable
🤔 a local store of mine still hase one MK3 Tech marine in stock... and they have an online shop...
The Porphyrion looks cool, but you might as well get a Warhound Titan
slip a brother that link, you feel me?
Shall i send in DM?
Humor me
I still have an unopened first gen MK3 Squad
First gen plastic I mean
My lgs has this drukhari squad in finecast still, no ones ever bought it
Idk what squad they have skull looking helmets
I think its finecast, but idk. Its just old
weren't a lot of the eldar and dark eldar super old finecast models
Idk my old warhammer models
There was at least one unit that was twenty years old
Those are Maugan Ra's Aspect Warriors
Maugan Ra aka Eldar Doom Guy
His design is damn cool
Dark Reapers are heavy weapons specialists iirc
sang guard so far
theyd look fine def
I’ll have an experiment, I’ve only had practice with mud bases but wanted to have something different for them without getting a custom base
I’ll have a go once I’ve got my leviathan done
Speaking of which, just got the legs done now
What weapons is it gonna have?
get that Dreadnough beer and car keys
Twin storm cannons
Finally started painting again... some wip on recently stripped old scout models (bought back in 2010)...
Boutta go acquire the proteus protocol
blooded kill team chieftain inspired by the moebian sixth
One War Dog in the same way I paint my Slaves to Darkness.
Should have done an Emperors children instead of a ultramarine they’d like to be stepped on
It has begun, I will paint word bearers AND I SHALL BECOME POWERFUL, THE DARK GODS SHALL EMPOWER ME AND GIVE ME UNLIMITED FETNYAL AND HORSE TRANQILIZER
Man games workshop really let us go crazy thinking we'd get emps children or skaven or Seraphon and we get fucking.....solar auxilia
Screaming and crying rn
Burna boyo
Turns out I misplaced 20 whole unbuilt MK6 marines when I moved lol
I just found them with a bunch of spare sprues
Does anyone know if the 3rd party Kromlech panels are the same size as the exorcist?
Wanna convert one to a chaos rhino but I would rather not have to scrape absolutely everything off of them
Not the whole mini but just the helmet
Made my final primaris Sergent, I like this head from the old BA upgrade sprue so I think I'm gonna paint it like a sanguinary guard
It'll still be a flesh tearer but instead of the helmet being black it'll be Gold.
I'll think of a lore reason for it later
Christened by a sanguinary guard or something
Very keen to get this, gonna be calling my local GW store to find out when their anniversary will be
Ogryn Bone 'ead of the 110th Cadian Shadow Corp
The pose of that third guy with the power fist really looks odd to me.
Huh, I wonder what army this guy's collecting
Must be like, tau or something.
The boys are ready to waaaagh
yall chaos and iron warriors players. What should i kitbash into an Exalted Champion?
First pass on another ksons cultist
Does anyone know if there's an app where you can drag/drop 3d models of units and test how paint schemes might look?
i was thinking the pose was him about to shoot something then punch it
Impcat might work for you, it even has a subreddit to help you get started
Looks perfect! Thanks!
What a profile
NOO NOTHING BUT TAU
Schmol
How do you even paint those
Was worried the overly colourful designs weren't gonna fit together properly but I think it works
So when edge highlighting space marines do you do both sides of the trim on the shoulder? Like GW box art? Or just the ones facing the light
Like how they edge highlight every edge of the pauldron
Also what's a good color to highlight khorne red? I know that for blood angels you go mephiston red>evil sun scarlet>wild rider red but I feel like that may be a bit too strong of a color and would brighten up the dark red too much
The Eavy metal team likes to highlight the highlights so to speak, they fucking love edge highlighting EVERYTHING
For highlighting khorne red I just add a bit of white to khorne red and highlight it
I moved away from GW reds when I could
Like I was taught that edge highlighting is for mostly places the light will catch, tops of the head, shoulders, gun barrel etc
This was only my 2nd attempt highlighting but I didn't highlight anywhere the light wouldn't hit
I still need to highlight the helmet, gun and leather
sheesh how much was that boy
A lot cheaper than what Amazon showed for a bit tbh
120
I need the two other varrients now
oh my gosh you did so good
i stalk this chat often and ive seen you post your progress and its actually great to see how fast you’re improving

Lol thanks but next time I'll try to glaze between them to make the highlights more subtle
And I'm improving so fast because of everyone here who answers my 8 million questions lol
Especially corpse starch telling me constantly "it's good but you can do better" lol
Like this was my first attempt
yellow, not white
More correctly, just saying "you can do better"
or "improvement"
A harsh teacher, but a fair one lol
if its an improvement, then I'll tell you
Which this new one is an improvement @mint dove
And next one I'll try glazing between the highlights to make them more uniform
this is what I call good
Thats...paint?
Christ almighty
Yeah I don't think I'll ever be to that level
But if someone looks at My stuff and says "That looks like the box art" good enough for me
i mean you're talking about hundreds of hours for these things
thats a good goal to set
Speaking of highlighting I had a question
Let me grab the reference real quick
So on the furioso those curved panels on the arms, would I highlight the center of those panels?
And the flat panels on top. Would I just paint them almost entirely my highlight color?
you'd highlight the top and work out a gradient down to about half way and then you'd do the same for shading
look at how a car reflects the sun
I see, so I'd keep my edges dark but as I get closer to the center go lighter and lighter
Then glaze it all together?
pretty much yeah
it would be reflecting the sun a little
Gotcha, my dreadnoughts are my favorite units so I really want to get em right
I usually just do straight down so I can keep all my units uniform
So I don't finish 10 units only to find I did the light from the wrong angle and have to redo him
i typically do it from an angle from the rear so I can get optimal shadows
but thats an instagram thing
Or have to explain "yeah that's Terry, he faces backwards don't worry about it"
I did buy some random orks and skaven for practice
I'll try different angles on those, see what I can accomplish
yey!! :3
that'#s just one coat of blue,l it's patchy
Decided I might go for this shade of blue
I've come to a great conclusion 'buying minis from ebay is cheap as hell'
Another few touch-ups and he's done 🙂
Peter Turbo!
Has to be the coolest base
Current wip on repainting scouts....
ordered my first plague marines
will (eventually) post when they're put together and painted
My go-to for red armour is Gal Vorbak, then Khorne Red, then Evil Suns Scarlet if I want the whole thing to read as pure red
For this pic it seems like they used Jokaero or Troll Slayer orange for this highlight
Pro tip I found for highlights: just mix like 20-50% off-white into whatever your base colour is and you'll end up with a good highlight colour that transitions naturally
We love Petulant Manchild in this house
When you say off-white you mean like vallejo bonewhite or citadel screaming skull/Ushabti bone?
2 out of the box advices: red highlights on black look like a pretty cool red armor. Orange and light skin color highlights on red works great
Closer to like Celestra/ulthuan grey you want it to kinda soften the colour more than outright tint it with white
I don't like mixing color for edge highlights and I don't like not mixing it for volumetric highlights
Edges may look uneven with mixed colors but transitions just look smoother with volumes
I kinda play it by ear tbh
I kinda avoid volumetric highlight and try to use contrasting colours for highlights instead lately I way prefer how it turns out
Cyan/pink highlighting each other is a tried and true formula for me lol
did u just sacrifice an entire cerastus for that
thats both absolutely incredible and horrifying
It’s part of the base for him, the knight comes looking like that
Dunno if I wanna work on my third leman Russ or my second chimera today…
I've started doing my gold in more layers, retributor, fleshshade, auric armour and then sigmarite and then the absolute lightest silver drybrush,
it makes it look ridiculously polished and shiny
Rip it didn't tag the message properly
From my experience/reaserch I usually mix colors for flesh bits but just do edge highlighting with other colors for metal bits
Like for ork flesh I use waaagh flesh as the base then add 1:1 base tone and Elysian green then for the top most highlight I put the same amount of ogryn camo in the mix
Anybody got any recommendations for vallejo alternatives to leadbelcher and retributor armor? It's getting super obnoxious not having a dropper bottle
Game color gold and gunmetal?
I have never seen or used a vallejo product before so anything you recommend to me I will just buy today at the store
They also have army painter if anybody thinks their metallics are better
I tend to like Vallejo model air chrome for my gunmetal but to each their own
Vallejo makes great stuff for cheap
I avoid AP paints typically
That bad?
I haven't had the best experiences with them either
They're rattle cans nearly ruined my IG infantry
AP has has been one of the worst hobby brands, but they're redoing their paints and haven't tried the new ones. I've heard that they're pretty good
I've heard really good things about their speedpaints
yeah they seem decent but pretty prone to reactivation
AP makes great tools, basing materials and brushes- their paints are pretty bad.
I also don’t know why someone would buy speed paints over contrast or vallejo xpress
well great is a stretch ngl, decent starter gear that will last long sure
I don't mind citadel's metallics I jsut cannot deal with the process of transferring it over to a pallete anymore
Base/layer paints are fine because its easy to put them on a wet pallete
the citadel metallics with the white caps are great, those usually cost a bit more as well
I've been thinking about trying to transfer my metallics to dropper bottles but that seems so mind numbing
but Vallejo Metal Air range are pretty much the best metallics, especially for steel and iron tones
Stupid question, but air range isn't for airbrushes right
well it is mainly for airbrushes but nothing is stopping you from using them with a normal brush
The color metallics that army painter have work pretty nicely, Azure Magic, Gemstone, Night Scales and the like.
None
besides my experience with them from fine art and them lying constantly about pigments, their quality is laughable at best
i think ill live if my 3 dollar thing of paint is consumer grade quality paint
im glad they found a niche where they can sell paint, but their hobby paints are lower quality than the fine art paints they make, and those are a massive joke within that community
well there are consumer grade paints that are actually quiet good
weirdly enough some craft paints are actually stupidly good
like jo sonja punches way above its weight class
i dont doubt it but im going to my local game store
I dont know what game stores carry to be fair
Does anyone have or know about the Betrayal at Calth Heresy box?
hobby brand paint, usually just vallejo AP and citadel
I've got most of it
You think it’s worth?
I only paid like 50€ for most of the minis in it to a friend whom had it lying around
I see it comes with a Contemptor, a preator in Tartarus armor and a Chaplin
oof, that sucks. im still trying out hobby brands to fine one I dont feel like im being a massive snob about, I have found 1 brand so far, but no others
but nowadays you have newer MKIII marines so I'd probably go for those if I were you
the contemptor is the old very stiff kit with little to no posing
Cool box, but the models are a bit outdated
I kind of wanna get it purely for collection reason box wise as I am an avid heresy enjoyer
I see, thank you all for the advice
It’s very helpful
The new heresy boxes are pretty dope
You're looking at it from a different lens to be fair. A hobbyist has different needs and wants than somebody who actually knows how paint operates.
Especially the new MK 3
You can get the two characters from Betrayal at Calth by themselves off GW's store
It's like the difference between a microphone meant for gaming and a studio microphone. It doesn't make the gaming mic dogshit, it's just accessibility and common product at a lower price. Sometimes.
I'm actually not looking at it from that much of a different lens, my issue is that most of these companies use dyes and not pigments
which is a really bad thing
That literally is a different lens because hobbyists dont care or know to care
they do care when the paints fade, its a chronic complaint
they just dont understand why they fade
It would probably be better to get one of the new Age of darkness boxes by now
I literally haven't seen or heard any complaints about it so it must not be a massive hobbyist grief
The old plastic contemptor was kinda bad
Yea most peeps just use Vallejo and citadel and a varnish and go on with their day
weird, I hear endless complaints in large discords and reddit, also in person
Already got it
because again its a different lenss you see things from. I'm not saying its a bad thing I'm saying you have higher standards and expectations of products.
Calth or one of the new boxes?
I've been painting for almost 20 years and I've not really suffered from any fading
Like I said before, I just kind of wanna dip into the old stuff for Heresy just to collect and see how they are
The average hobbyist probably eats red 40 by the pound
Age of darkness
Got it like a week or two ago
Same
you also dont use fluos often and you tend to keep things in the dark iirc
well fluos are a separate thing entirely, but I do have my things on a lit up cabinet
The old Mk3 and Mk4 models aren't really bad, they just aren't "truescale" so they may look a bit awkward now. The two characters you can get by themselves, and the new Contemptor kit is so much better. The old one only had two weapons, and was monopose
some hobby brands also have been using high loads of methyl violet recently, which is not something you want in this hobby
I have two of the new Contemptors, I really wanna get the Dredero and the Leviathan
thats where I have a different lens as thats a health and safety concern
The dredero is prolly my favorite of the three if I’m being honest
I do wanna get some of the mk3 marines as well for my Homebrew Chapter
get the new Mk3 Battlegroup box then, it's a pretty good deal
How much is it
If you also want the MK3 marines
Which ones? Not to doubt you but to avoid them myself too
a lot of companies use fluos in the mix as a easy way to brighten up colors, like tesseract glow is a fluo mixture funny enough
I thought it was common knowledge that the effect paints by citadel and other similar brands were fluos
a few scale 75 ones, daler rowney, a few obscure europe only brands
170 usd, or cheaper at a third party store
not at all
Daler rowney is a highly popular ink in the mini painting community
Sorry, it's 210 usd, my bad
lower tier but yeah close enough
Liquitex is a decent enough ink
I got one at a third party store, and it was 15% off
I've only seen Liquitex around here
long story short, scale 75 and my company almost signed a contract for us to produce them but I cancelled it because of the blends they wanted being mutagenic carcinogens and them refusing to change them because of cost
amazing
So I have a lot of gripes about them
its mostly using dyes and things like methyl violet
one of their colors we could have literally made for about 0.02 more if we swapped to dioxazine, but nope
I didnt sign an nda
I was planning on getting that
Just waiting till I finish my age of darkness box
I would have taken the cost to the company, because dont care that much about a few bucks a year, they dont sell that much paint
i also tried playing gsc against my mate who was running csm
the brood brothers baneblade was what carried if im honest
managed a very close loss against the abbadon death squad
not bad for a second game
I stand by vallejo game gunmetal
Also quick question how do I use layer paints effectively because I've only really used then to base coat and it didn't go well
My first game I ever played I threw my ragtag Salamanders up against a dudes tournement level Crimson Fist gunline
have you tried the gunmetal from their metal color line?
It did not go well
my first game was plague marines against csm
by putting it on top of another
same guy
i have to ask
what is this cardboard thing
its not a base
its not the first one of these i've seen
Wood
and im soon to paint my first army
I have not. Is good?
Dear god
its something to hold the parts
its useable
good is stretching it
but useable from me is high praise
these are so fucking good, literally the only steel tones I use. Everything else is just awful compared to them
anyway hitting my mates chaos spidertank whatever with a stolen baneblade from across the map was quite enjoyable
Yeah I just superglue parts to wood for painting In subassembaly then snap em off
I still prefer my pompous brand, lascaux, but I have used these more than 4 times
(he then brutally murdered me)
Especially when I've heard you describe paint as "Glorified house paint"
fucking corax white
but it is
its literally chemically identical to house paint
i developed a dislike of plasma weapons, because anytime I tried using them, I would roll nothing but ones
Never once had a good white paint from GW
i complained that he did many unmentionable acts to tzeentch because he kept rolling so good
i also didn't know that vehicles could shoot into melee
White, yellows, and oranges are the only times I will be adamant about using a professional brand
and thus my ridgerunners (which have mining lasers) used their wheels on the rubricae
alas
Luckily I play Iron Hands now, nothing complicated needed
not brownish like most oranges
I usually jsut mix my oranges myself cause they're always too yellow
My go to is vallejo white. Had the same dropper for 2 years and it's never once let me down
Yknow i don't think I'll ever collect sigmar, but alot of their models go hard
i have an idea for when i'm getting more plague marines
i'm gonna take some sororitas and put them on the 32mm base
and make sisters of rot
golden high flow white, it'll change your life
like literally
even liquitex white ink
You should try Warcry
They don't sell in small pots afaik, can't be asked to put 30€ to a bottle that I will probably only use a fifth of in my life
fifth is pretty generous as well
30ml is pretty small
They really do go hard
I've only seen the 118ml ones
Jesus how much a bottle?
That’s like 35-45 USD
$11 for a 118ml in the US
I keep forgetting what country you're from, norway, right?
found an eu store that sells 30ml titanium white but that too is 6,17€ + VAT which is still pretty much
ouch
im still looking for good local brands in europe
but its rough
things were so much simpler before brexit for this stuff too
its really caused me a ton of issues for work
lascaux is Switzerland and makes acrylic gouaches
and acrylic gouaches are really good
its basically what hobbiests dream of
super opaque, comes in a ton of convenience colors, easily thinned
If there was a high quality green that looked identical to castellen green i'd probably buy it but i hardly ever paint white
thats just black and yellow iirc
but I dont remember off hand
maybe a little white
its like an olive drab color if I recall
Sounds about right
I've enjoyed Vallejo's Moon Yellow and Sun Yellow
Paint all my hazard stripes with those
bismuth vanadate, it can one coat black. expensive but its stupidly bright
Ouh
What would you recommend for purples? I wanna paint my knights a nice deep purple as a base. I hvae Pheonician Purple, but I haven't tried it yeat
violet or purple? violet is blue leaning, purple is red leaning. In any case, the base for both is dioxazine violet
which is... VERY deep violet
very transparent but incredibly good
Probably more violet
Would it work through an airbrush though? Cause I'd probably have to thin it a bunch
yes
its a very high tint stregnth pigment so a little goes a long way
Any brands in particular you'd recommend for it?
GW's might be fine, but I'm trying to get away from them
I personally use holbein and golden the most, but liquitex is fine too
keep in mind, the ones I use are not matte
I prefer satin to matte
I see golden all the time at Michaels, so I'll try that
Yeah I prefer satin too
I don't like matte very much, or glossy
Tryna find a blue that matches this knight, I don’t thing t-boy blue will cut it
but not all for me
Tsons**** oml
want to say thats vallejo magic blue
ive seen it before
its basically just white and phthalo blue greenshade
Working on my custom cam apothecary, feel bad for the guys head
Also corpse didn't mention it but he's recommended some SoFlat paints to me

could always color your bases
