#40k-minis-and-armies

i tried mixing ultramarine blue with white
to get like a sky blue
but its just gray
:<
My fellow Darktide Gamers.
Say hello to my new Terminators.
Hello Terminators
The brush you're most comfortable with
i ended up using a round 2
I use flats personally
Inb4 they release Kroot as standalone Xenos and piss off all us T'au players by taking away one of our few auxiliary model lines.
My uncle bought T'au how do I disown him?
T'au cool
Hello terminators
oh wow that's a really pretty scheme
There's a combination of household materials (CA glue, PVA glue, baking soda or alcohol) that causes the resultant goop to bubble and form these nurgle-esque shapes. I can picture it in my head, but I forgot what materials react like this. Anyone know what I am talking about?
Also i’ve been unsure for a while my my marines are accustomed scheme sort of meant to be like crimson fist but the terminators are different because I didn’t just want to paint blue the whole time but instead of silver, would something like a red look better?
I know I need to redo the power fist and have like the top cover be blue
For reference the rest of the Marines look like this although these guys might also need a little bit of redoing
Found it, it's a PVA layer with CA/super glue drops, which forms these patterns.
Not mine, just a reference picture if other people want to make tyranid/nurgle effects
That looks fucking disgusting
Awesome
how do i easily fix my paint being too runny?
since i started painting my minis again my retributor gold has been too watery
I HAVE
its just reverse drying
like suddenly it stopped drying
and i dunno absorbed all water in the atmosphere or so
do you have a dehydrator in your house
pfff do i look rich
my country doesnt use air conditioners
your houses are also made of paper <-<
mine is brick AND concrete
Nah give me this
when you look the ogryn in the eyes
just rain down missiles on a horde
and then impale a chaos spawn on a custodian spear
Why does that look like some of the missiles would just hit her hood and explode her head if they were fired?
Mostly the left pod
nah
Maybe just the angle though
that is so well made I thought it was a dollar store pizza
Just kitbashed a custom techmarine!! He's so cool, probably one of the coolest models I've ever built
Finished Dreg Rager conversion
Hell yeah
Rough finish
Good job man
I've been struggling to find a guard fatigue recipe that I like, honest criticism on this rough draft of the shading? It hasn't been cleaned up yet but the idea is there.
My plan is to lightly streaking grime the clothing afterwards
Going to nuln oil recess shade the armor and do light sponge weathering on it
Playing a combat patrol tourney in half an hour wish me luck fuckers
what dont you like about the recipes out there?
Oh it's nothing that I dislike, I just like finding my own method
I've only painted a couple miniatures and all the stuff i read is so intimidating
Good luck!
Current wip on gladiator lancer..
Just needs his shading
Hate to say this but painting tau is so much than sisters
What color do you use for the fatigue
well good. I'm going to avoid giving you feedback though as you're new and most of what I have to say will get fixed as you paint more and gain muscle memory
so they are non-issues
Remember to highlight the black
Pilots for a Valkyrie?
Gunners
nice
It's a very cool model, even though I won't put in on tabletop
Fellow valkyrie interior painter
Three more to be built tommorow, then its priming time.
Some work done on the Power Fist, testing a prototype shoulder pad, and WIP Big Bolter
Yeah i know my painting is all over the place. It makes me sad but I'll always take any advice
hey, its a learning process, you can always fix mistakes. Dont feel bad about them
mistakes and imperfections are where the art is
So far this is the best model I've painted
perfection is devoid of personality
Actual badass quote
i preach what i teach
Within art theory, good is just an opinion and so there is no factual good
so if you think its good, then it is good
paint for yourself and not for others
I think some of my work is at least average and that's more than fine by me
No matter what I pull up to my local game store with, they always cheer my stuff on
Watching youtube channels of people painting and visting the 40k subreddit has definitely given me unrealistic standards. I assumed a lot of people in the hobby paint to that meticulous detailed level but its far from that
Not like in a negative way, they still paint really cool stuff
'There are more armies of grey models than there are fully painted models' - Sun Tzu
Also a decent job I like to think
I really thought everybody had fully painted armies 💀
Indeed.
I mean, sure, I can try and make something look absolutely flawless, with no scuffs or anything whatsoever.
or, simply because I lost the base he was supposed to have, I can turn a Necromunda Enforcer into a god damn badass who went through hell and came back alive.
Sergeant Farley had fucks to give.
Had.
The trick is to watch people paint in full, if you want you can watch me paint something, I tend to be much faster than the average painter because I have decades of fine art training, what helps is also I'm very quick to think of what I need and I know how to mix it all out of the most bizarre things.
For instance my grays do not contain black at all.
I just use cobalt teal, ultramarine, bismuth yellow, cadmium lemon, pyrrole red, quin magenta, burnt umber and titanium white
Sometimes I switch up the pyrrole red for cadmium red... And if I'm feeling really crazy I use raw umber
I have hundreds of paints but I only use 8
It's something that gets lost on people in this hobby all the time
It's why this is not truly a full art form yet, It doesn't have the artist's perspective as of yet
It tends to fight it as well
do people paint before they put the mini together or after?
Or do people do both?
Depends on the mini. I used to assemble them fully, to have them ready to play, but now I only fully assemble minis if that doesn't create awkward gaps that make the model harder to paint.
You understimate the size of the various piles of shame aroun the world
Personally I don't have a pile but that's just because I don't have much money to spare, but if I had it I would absolutely have one
the number of times I went into a shop to buy two boxes or more because I had a kitbash idea, then left after seeing the prices...
aaand I left my minis on the train
Tried my absolute best to have a good day today but a bad day was trying to have me apparently
I'M SO SORRY
🫂
you had a nice box too
ahh that's so sad I'm sorry
any hope of recovery??
Personally, I paint first then assemble
Sometimes with really finnicky bits with fuck-all points of contact it does lead to glue smearing and paint getting rubbed off, but that's an acceptable loss imo.
The alternative is trying to paint with the damn thing assembled
I mean
Have a look at any ad-mech unit and tell me that shit is easy to paint post-assembly
Look at those coat insides. I could not for the life of me get both the coat AND the legs looking that good if this shit was pre-built THEN painted
I'd have lost my fucking mind around the fifth paint-over attempt

I wouldn’t paint the pieces individually for the most part but yeah you just can’t be basing/painting Skitarii without subassemblies
admec newest invention
...I like those plasma guns
Also I am still buying one of the leggy lads the moment they come out
I like painting "important" bits like heads and capes and backpacks in subassembly but I don't really mind hard to reach parts. "If I can't reach it, they won't see it"
some people like to paint inside their tanks, some people just slap contrast over zenithal and call it a day
it depends on how much effort you're willing to spend
I'm going through that current dilemma rn
I really want my soon to be purchased baneblade built as soon as possible but idk if I'll regret it
damn i was able to clean up and fix a lot
but the helmet is borked
I'll just look at her from behind lol
Lil salemander finished up
thats why i paint each piece before i put it all together
like i assemble the legs then i paint the legs
i assemble the upper body, paint it and when all is done i put it all together
did some photography practice with older models and it's starting to look pretty good, just need to get better lightning instead of the single desktop lamp I've got
oh damn, thats like an actual work of art. the glow on Horus's head is amazing, all of them are amazing even.
in contrast to the previous pics, mine are not as good, but i just finished this knight and kinda want to share
photography isn't my strong suit either
"the best paint palette is your cutting mat" gang 🤝
i am just very messy, i actually have a wet palette (and that one you see in the image too)
What in the fuck
Thank you
WIP Loyalist Khârn
great idea but please clean your mold lines and sprue bits
Archeotech spotted
That is why it's a WIP, please don't be snarky
it was a direct advice, I don't get how did you find me snarky.
@rare hornet opinion required
I wanna do the core/reactor piece in bronze, but do I do the shroud pieces also in bronze? Or just the exhaust bits and the shrouds in silver?
leave the shrouds as the armour colour, do the exhaust tips silver and the reactor bronze
sound
I managed to get 100 32mm base pieces for $35 from Amazon instead of getting from GW for like $60 CAD. It's just ridiculous. I still got my Tactical space marines on 25 mm base, which I'll convert all of them.
I do both, it depends on what is getting painted
thats why i always put my contact information in my bag
you'd be shocked at how often I get my items returned
What in the god fresh hell Emperor am I looking at?
The Future
Has someone experience with diy washes and can tell me, if I really need to buy inks for them or if it's ok to use normal paint to make my own wash too? And maybe has a recipe, as I somehow find only ink recipes
vrrrrrr, woooooosh, brrrrrr
Nyoom noises
He do be going
Looks fucking gorgeous, but yeah needs a clean
Oooh I love it
this helmet is coming out SO much better than my palantine
What’s up with the grainy texture on the armor
Yeah I probably would've but it was the first time I'd ever taken the case out so it wasn't really prepped properlu
yeah it sucks when it happens
there is a chance someone might have turned it into lost and found
Chonky suit done
How do you paint large areas without leaving brush marks
Thin coats
Thin your paints
In this video Duncan goes into detail about how to thin your paint and the reason for doing so.
Iconic video
Yeah I live in a reasonably low income high theft area so I'm not exactly gonna get my hopes up, but I'm about to ring the metro company to see if there's anything in lost and found
At first glance I was wondering why his sword had a looted sign on top, which struck me as oddly orky
That usually happens when you spray paint primer at a bad angle, the paint comes out with less bonding agent and looks more like a powder.
i spray painted from like a 45 degree angle
its zenithal highlighting
you get an even black coat then you do just like one spray from the top and it shades everything
What’s the best way to prevent burnout
i think i need to get a new red paint. i know red is usually not very opaque but i worked up from brown and it took me like 10 layers to get it actually red lol
vallejo bloody red
it was very very thin out of the bottle.
i tried mixing it with brown to thicken it and it didn't work very well
then i thickened it with black and it was perfect but i didn't realize until like 5 minutes before i had to stop
idk i have the opposite problem
i want to paint but i have homework
Just telling of my experience
Holding the spray can straight gives me much smoother results (and shaking the can ofc)
Crimson Fist Captain Alejandro Guerrero's elite squad, Primaris Aggressors, assembled.
Especially when you take into account that the comissar is probably like 7ft tall
It's such an awesome model but the idea of magenztizing some of it is so stressful
what variant are you going to build
I'm gonna do a pentablade
thats going to be sick
i love how i look for a gif with "eat paint" and one of the first gifs is charlie and matt
Chonky boi
Why are warhammer minis so expensive 😭
because it's GW, baby
joins us in Poorhammer
Revel in Etsy proxies
Master the ways of the 3d printers
Joins us in the purity of the blessed machine, for your wallet weakens and decays
The Brit’s love stealing money
I audibly laughed when i found out the size scale
Ill stick my mini in because i wanted to. Anyone knows where the tabard and the helmet for the black templar variant is from?
warhammer 🗿
Helmet is a MKV but it could be from myriad of sources, but probably 3D printed
Tabard could be from Black Templar specific units or Bladeguard Veterans or Vanguard Veterans or a captain etc
Never seen anyone paint lenses on the helmet studs though
I watched Eons of Battle's recent vid on magnetising all variants, it seemed pretty involved
Yeah its all a bit much. I just decided on slotting my 3 favorite variants in, no magentizing
Honestly perfect acceptable
I'm really not a fan of the transport versions anyways
Best guess is that looks like a standard Mark V helmet, the tabard though is hard to tell and quite possibly from any old kit, although maybe some Phobos character if I had to guess?
Maybe give the librarian a look? He might have a tabard but that’s purely a guess
Big gun
That's kinda cute
here's a question. say if I wanted to paint up the Kasrkyn kill team but didn't want to paint them as Kasrkyn, what else could I paint them as?
just want some ideas rlly.
blows my mind MK V is not in any of GW models
ok FW supposedly have them, for a premium 💀
Anyone with experience gluing the cockpit glass on the Valkyrie? Or the metal struts onto the glass for that matter? I know that plastic glue and superglue will fog so I wanna know what’s my alternative? PVA?
What about using wood glue to put the glass itself on valkyrie?
@midnight locust checked some tutorials at YT and all of them using PVA/wood glue for cockpit glass/canopy
I wish i knew about fogging before i glued mine
So sad still
Pva/wood glue. Alright cool
But be careful with that stuff,, not too much not too little
Yeah it’s a very delicate process
yup... most of the guys use toothpicks to put it on surface
That seems like a good way to go about it. I’ll remember that
Mk V is heresy pattern?
It's the nickname for it yes
Mk 3 is Iron, Mk 4 is.... hmmm. Mk 5 is heresy, Mk 6 is corvus, Mk 7 is aquilla, Mk 8...? There is no Mk 9 and Mk 10 has a lot of variants
mk10?
I never knew Mk 8 existed XD
my favourite is Mk 3 Iron Armour and Cataphractii Terminator Armour though
mk4 armor with mk7 helmet, that's the classic look to me
Mk10 is primaris and it's variants
I meant mk4 helmet looks like mk10
Ah, true
Now I just need a manticore and a chimera, then I got all my favorite vehicles
Sponson time
I knew I wasn't the only one who thought like that
Just to polish up the gaps with greenstuff and pin them and i can get them primed ready to start painting tommorow. Yipee
Current wip on Gladiator Lancer...
nice
im gonna base coat a rhino in black soon
hope I can get a nice finish like that
Just white scar rattlecan and some Black Templar contrast paint ^^
shade/weathering and stuff is still missing...
What's a good trim color for nightlords? I'm undecided on either sliver, gold, or bronze.
why not all 🧠
Can't wait to get into smallhammer
If you want to go the easy route, you can pick silver, so you spray the model with leadbelcher, then paint the panels with leviadon blue contrast paint.
Still need to redo half of the top shelf, edge highlights, bases etc.
But this is my entire collection thus far
Redo the ballistus to bring him in line with the redemptor
Grav tracks in Leadbelcher
Etc.
The lancer is fucking lethal btw
If it survives
Its awfully frail
It reaped an entire "large monster" army in a 40k doubles tournament
My Death Guard partner sat still and watched the fireworks
Explaining people that I paint Minis is really awkward
Welcome to the club my guy
"Some people paint pictures, I paint army men then I play board games with them"
I had to explain what 40k is to a old lady
Most people i tell this are paying much respect to me cuz' of the patience i put in this hobby
i showed a coworker cause i said i was really nerdy
and he was like what do you do that's nerdy
and i showed him this picture
and he was like OH YOU DO ART THATS NOT NERDY
lmao 🤓
Wip tau
Lmao
just do it like a real artist, say you figure paint
or say you paint miniature canvases
nice tau are cool
i would probably collect tau if they had more allied races
i kind of want an army thats like 1/3 humans but they dont have rules for gue'vasa
I like tau for the mechs
i want a mix. the tau have gundams and they have allied races and i like both those things
i dont want an army of JUST mechs and fire warriors cause i feel like it doesnt really capture whats cool about them
they could be like the border princes from warhammer fantasy with a bunch of allied races working together
in theory orks could even join the tau haha
there are tau eldar too
Get a hammer head
Is it the giant mech thing
Mantas are sick
giant armored aircraft carrier that can fight titans and are hybrid space/atmosphere
thats so coooooool
imagine a rogue trader got one that would be so cool
I want really want to make my own tau faction
if I did tau I think I would do a conversion and make some of the fire warriors have human heads and tau heads
Samurai style tau would be nuts
they have no melee though!!
maybe something like this
but make it like a stealth suit
with the laquered armor sheets
I can Home brew my own lore and shit
Might steal my friends resins printer and print some bits
Chaos tau😈
I have so many idea for custom tau army’s but i don’t have the skill or resources to do them
i have i really cool idea for imagifier kitbash
gonna replace the state of a martyr with a shield attached to a warhammer as a pole
and the inquisition seal on the shield
my sister's army will be inquisition themed
ordo hereticus, let's fight some daemons
i got 3 knock off imagifiers coming cause I'm not paying 100 dollars for 3 models lmao
then i get 2 boxes of battle sisters
Medic!
each unit of battle sisters will have an imagifier
Kharn happened
You don't wanna hunt down these old beauties?
ahahaha i love those eyes
Tis a legendary sculpt
Gladiator Lancer 90% done.. some flaws need to be corrected, inscripts, decals and inscripts still missing....
I'm not visiting family for thanksgiving this year so I'll be building a combat patrol 😄
Which one you will build?
sororitas 😄
Aah SoB... Good choice
Looks good!
I stick to my BT minis for the next while.. still got some BT Char Units to do as also a bit Báttleline
these are my first two minis ever
ah BT, we can team up to kill daemons 😄
i need a higher pigment blue paint
Yup ^^
i believe that
it looks so vibrant irl
My 3 fav Minis are Grimaldus and my 2 Chaplains in Terminator armor
grimaldus is cool. one of the first 40k books i read was helsreach
i got it in an airport and all the books at the airport were bad
i ended up getting into 40k lol
Ever seen the Helsreach Fanmade Film on YT?
clips but it looked really scuffed
i saw the part where the land train kills the gargant
I would recommend you to take time to spend 2,5 hours lookin' the helsreach film.. It is worth it, and there are some Soroitas in it ^^
I'll peep it 🙂
just look for Helsreach from the rostam 40k archive
i spilt earth shade on my mini
dinnae fash its "weathering"
Did you drink the rest of it?
YEAH
cut the stick part and let your SoB grab it
REPENT!!! REPENT!!! REPENT!!!
It is, from the Slaves to Darkness box.
I want to have it as a centrepiece to a Death Guard Army
Trying out some basing techniques with faux grass on a termie swarm.
My eventual 2k list has a ten brick of terminators led by a terminator chaplain
Chaplain is in the mail, termies will have to wait
That's a funky looking plasma, nice
Hellflamers or Plasmus marines
Dang, the new night lords kill team looks nice.
It does indeed
wip
Should I snag some Necromunda, ship deck-esque basing for the Imperial Navy breachers since they're space hulk based.
@plush swift
This is my lancer currently... Inscriptions, weathering and Shades are missing
I'm currently thinking about adding some additional gear to the tank...
Already used all that stuff 🤣
me too
quick question
is there no unit for primaris that uses special heavy weapons like grav cannon or las cannon?
I mean, it seems that they are replacing all firstborn with primaris
so why not
well, I personally just want a Devastator squad's new kit tbh
Desolation Squad's rocket launcher design looks even worse than Nurgle's worst pest
Currently we have only Plasma, Multi Melta, Flamer, HBolter & Rocket Launcher squads on Primaris level
And i'm not sure if they will bring Primaris Devastors...
Cuz' firstborn Devastors still kicking asses
we can maybe get a new kit
the sternguard and terminator treatment
I don't know what others may say but firstborn marines looks a bit... short for me
so when I once start actually collecting, I think I'll focus on primaris
Then we have to wait for further reveals... But the last reveals were DA focused... so reveals are going with 10th Ed roadmap
I do like firstborn comp tho
Without firstborn there would be no primaris
yeah
But as said, i think GW will stick strictly to 10th Ed roadmap.. so they will release the next things like shown before
my custom chapter will be forgotten after HH and somehow withstand for 10k years while being beaten up like a pulp
they will end up with like less than 100 battle brothers, and then the primaris will come in so they are like: Well we have no choice
thats the shortened lore I came up with
So next reveals should be Custodes, T'au and Chaos
Yup
IG will come relatively late for what I guess
weren't they like the last codex in 9th ed
Summer/Autumn 2024
I will wait for 2nd part of roadmap in spring 2024
hmmmm, IG is coming pretty early
and after that i will see how long the wait is 😄
I may not be a Catachan player but I do hope for a new Catachan model
they are too old XD
Only things i like in IG are Kriegsmen and Kasrkins
Once I start collecting I think I'll collect Krieg and Astartes
aaaaaaaand maybe one more type of Xeno to set up the cinematics
tbh, I'll go bankrupt within hours once I actually start collecting XD
I'm like, OHHHHH 30K SALAMANDERS
OHHHHHH ASTARTES
That's why i save up money before spending....
and my money will melt faster than the termagents in front of Heavy Flamer
A buddy of mine just has 9 factions and nearly for every faction 1.5k battle ready minis
why do I think that redacted have a high chance of being Emperor's Children 40k release
I just... feel like it
you can take a picture of this
I'm something of a psyker afterall
it is time to release EC cuz' many want to play them
nearly any buddy of mine that plays chaos wants to field EC
Would make at least one of my buddies happy 😄
Leaks from GW a while ago suggested there would be two new factions in 10th, a Chaos faction and a Xenos faction. So it'll probably be either of them
the worst situation possible?
and EC is likely
another Primaris Lieutenant
or PRIMARIS LEGIONNAIRE
...just shoot me if that happens
Hmm another Xenos Faction? Ynnari?
okay, so Emperor's Children would be fixed in that case
and Xeno?
I can only think of Aeldari new kits or something else
they deserve it
if it is an entire new Xeno faction, I don't know what it'd be
don't know much about lore yet
maybe Scaven Space version? XD
Could be Kroot, coz a lot of Krooty stuff in Rumour Engines lately, but I really hope they don't take them away from T'au
This would have some meme vibes as also some warhammer old world fantasy vibes... and last thing would be problematic
"The Kroot Civil Wars" 😄
Some people have suggested Exodites, Primal Eldar who ride dinosaurs.
Sounds dope
Warhammer 40k ???????th edition: We now have Emperor of Mankind that we can use for 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 points
This won't happen... Big E might be healing but according to the newest books i'm afraid he could get the worst enemy of the imperium
hmmm, interesting
I don't think there will ever be a Warhammer 40k End Time equivalent
at least for now
it is sci-fi so you can extend the stuff infinitely unlike fantasy
you can get primaris primaris marine
Newest books are talking about the yellow king and the black king... i won't spoiler any details... but if you are interested look this up...
you can spoil it
all my sources are rather... untrustable
but do it on DM though
don't wanna ruin it for the others
no i can't in respect of the others here that eventually want to read the books.
Some people say it already started with G man coming back lol
As somebody who just got into the hobby early this year I'm gonna be so mad if they turn 40k into an end times event
My quest for a fully operable Devilfish with all hatches continues
Pretty much ready to spray prime everything then paint interiors before final assembly
Got some painting done at work last night
strangely realistic humanoid pose
Cerastus Knights are the most human proportioned knights
The carapace will add some hunch tho
I love cerastus knights
There’s a castigator in a local store but I want an Acheron
I might get turnip 28 bits
This Knight is gonna be a Castigacheron, magnetized arms and printed both weapons
Still need shades but i'm pretty happy how it turned out...
I finished my first Dark Angel today, was testing out some new techniques I have not tried yet, and wanted to up my base game.
EDIT: added the company marking, had forgotten about that
Well I successfully dragged someone else into the pit that is warhammer today
Where do you get those?
Is there an official catalog?
...what in the world is turnip 28?
its another miniature war game thats based around modifying other figures in specific ways
like you put slaaneshy parts and medieval bits onto Napoleonic soldiers type thing.
Warhammer fantasy but cool
Napoleonic wars fought by mushrooms
And turnips
I touched up my first mini and added a new base
Added dirt
so many sales right now for 3D printers
i shouldnt right? I shouldnt haha. I dont know anything about it haha... unless?
do it
Do it
why shouldnt you?
Save $20 by getting the Mars 3 4k instead of the Mars 3 Pro 4k
print some
Welcome to the hobby, @silver thorn !
Remember you need a curing station, all it is a box to blast intense UV at printed parts, I got mine off Amazon for 30 bucks
Message me if you need any technical help or suggestions
thanks! i appreciate that
tbh I'm really interested in kitbashing
and bits get EXPENSIVE
Printed bits don't
Check out Solutionlesn on Cults3d I know they've got a free pack of imperial bits. Kinda stuff you'd tie off on a tank or find in a trench
not darktide but mr titus look awesome here
I expect nothing less from Weta, nor do I expect less cost for that fucking statue
We stating to get there
eats the resin
Been standing guard on Terra so long his sword has a patina
uhu glue and red ink for blood 👌 acrylic just don't look right imo
i actually looked at that one myself although rather the mars 4 max and it was double price for me :(
looking at this one atm since it has a bigger space to print with
since i have no clue about 3dprinters i dunno which ones are good
i watched a few videos i saw really good results with the one i got
i think once you put paint on it it doesn't really matter tbh
you arent seeing these deals right now?
i saw this sale from a UK youtube so...
it should be international
mars 4 max 6k is down to 205 USD with free shipping which is 50 more than the model I purchased
duno what store thats from
manufacturer store
black friday sale
if its UK i will pay alot extra
TBH, I think the Mars 4 is overkill, especially for a first resin printer
thats the vibe I got
mars 3 seems to produce really good results for minis
the higher resolution is better if you are printing like
ACTION FIGURE type stuff
cause the extra quality goes a long way
UK orders are handled as "Global" with USD
i saw 2 videos where like... the extra resolution didnt look any better and sometimes worse than the lower resoltion models

I will say I can See faint layer lines after priming, but not after painting
Speaking of, got more painting done
.
proud of my Acheron flame cannon
LOL
custom miniatures (cursed i know)
Not as cursed as the five nights at Freddy's Knight army I just saw on reddit
The sniper is cute as hell
Kasrkin playing in the mud
The marine looks ready to stomp them. As he should.
Mean like "five (k)nights at Freddy's"?
I assume that was the motivation
Pretty sure it was a 1k 4 Armiger 1 knight list
I didn't think the new terminator box had plasma cannons, are they from an older kit?
Yeah kitbashed from the current deathwing box, since it was one of the view spares I had from it
Means I don’t have to buy a third box of them before the new knights kit comes out
Nice, it looks awesome
using the wrong acrylic paint then
tons of acrylic paints work perfect for blood, you just dont find them in hobby paints because if the poorly conceived notion that opacity=quality
problem isn't the quality or wrong color matching for me. it's texture and color variation for blood
I just can't convince myself painting blood splatter and seeing it as just red acrylic. that transparent shiny glue and uneven ink color seem to work for me way better
Use the red gemstone paint when it dries it looks like fresh blood
thanks. I'll try it
Practice of doing my custom chapter symbol. I tried to dry it quickly but held it too close to the flame coz im super smart.
Finished it put it up for contest
It’s honestly my favorite thing I did
Blood ravens dreadnought is fierce competition
once again, using the wrong paint, look outside of hobby paint
I use a lot of pr264 and pr177 for blood, and they are lightfast unlike the majority of red paints out there
I sincerely wonder when I implied I was using hobby paint 🤔
(still new to figure painting) arnt you supposed to use hobby paint? sense its a hobby?
why not use a blood technical
You can use what ever paint you want to use, professional grade stuff however is generally of a vastly higher quality and there are a lot more styles that can be tailored to what ever purpose you need without too much hassle
hobby paint has TONS of myths surrounding it.
99% of those are false.
what paint are you using then?
vallejo thick blood, bloody red, beastly brown
well, actually, now I'm using liquitex red ink and uhu
thats hobby paint
and thats a lower end professional ink, which is a VERY different thing
low end professional doesnt mean bad
there are just a lot of professional grade products that are better(also more expensive)
❤️ holbein inks
(but god damn is this shit expensive)
sorry but honestly this feels more like paint snobbing than an alternative suggestion
I can come off like that sometimes, i make paint actually
yeah, not interested. sorry.
Well I did actually suggest what to look for
and liquitex does in fact sell it
PR264 and PR177
look for those
hobby paints tend to be thicker than professional paints too
they are more akin to soft bodied paints
fluid acrylics are thinner than soft bodied but thicker than ink
the only difference between ink and a heavy bodied btw is a chemical thickener
literally thats it
short answer to what hobby paints are:
They are student grade paints that use a large amount of chalk in them to provide opacity as most pigments are transparent.
They do not have a different grind size compared to craft paint at all(I can provide proof of this).
They are an ecosystem designed around convenience colors, making it harder to mix your own but easier for those who dont want to mix colors
this doesnt mean they are bad, this just means they have a lot of marketing on them to make them seem like they are better than they actaully are. Being real about paints doesnt make me a paint snob
I'm just someone who's spent the past decade as a lead formulator at a paint company
the older lines of GW paints (talking like.. late 80's/90's) were made by a .. airplane paint manufacturer .. i think? its so much less of an issue now but holy shit they were light years beyond anything at that time
at least here in the states
Wish Citadel used dropper bottles
ESM, which they actually still use
They switched to winsor and newton for a few years then swapped back
nice! that's good to hear. i still have a few of my 3e paints sitting around needing to be 're-energized' but my last remaining chestnut ink still puts work in
You want to replace that chestnut ink?
mostly on acrylic stuff now since i just paint terrain/minis for d&d. yeah if you've got recommendations? flesh wash was pretty goat too if you thinned it a bit
there used to be a jerry's across town. a road trip might be in order next day off
Another fellow person in NC I see
not far. in Nashville. there was one on the south side but i haven't been there in like 8 or 10 years so it might be gone
yep! good ol' East Nasty
I have been to that store a few times for supplies for work
its nicer than main stores in NC
might have to paint up some old stuff when i get in the mood for it. i've got a lot of 2e/3e stuff that i haven't touched since high school. so many hormagaunts
what old paints do you have?
I'm actually looking for pictures/swatches for a project im doing which is converting all of their old colors to pigments so i can give people accurate matches
I have about 30 done
Turns out the majority of the old paints contained chromium oxide, which explained why they were good
it just isnt an air brush friendly pigment
sadly not much. last time i moved a lot of them had completely dried up beyond saving. i'll check and see what i've got
ANything helps
also the original ultramarine blue wasnt cobalt
thats phthalo blue green shade and titanium white
Rowboat Gorillaman lied to us
also, it looks like i might just have the flesh wash and chestnut. either got rid of a lot of them during the move or i gave a few out to my old ttrpg buddies
goblin green - a base's best friend
I dont have flesh wash actually
its the 3e era one in the shorter bottles. i know some of the paints b/w then got changed up some so i dunno if the washes are different
flesh tone for changed several times during 3e
hobby paints as a whole will change pigments based off fluctuations in the price of them just randomly
You can see this all the time with vallejo, hell I have 8 unopened bottles of agrax earth shade and 4 bottles of nuln oil, all are different hues
ever so slightly different in some cases
but modern nuln oil aand agrax are.... bad
they lowered the pigmentation again
oof. i'm used to fluctuating washes since i usually make my own. try to buy them for minis so they're a least a little more consistent.
I have a wash recipe thats super easy to follow and reproduce
only issue is the agrax one is... a bit pricey and requires you to go into a different line that isnt technically an ink but is
Feels a shame to glue these Sororitas Rhino doors in... covers up some nice detail.
if your wondering how to get that coat you put contrast arthermatic blue over lacquer pure gold airprush paint
which laquer?
Gpaint studio its expensive production has been put on hold too until next year so alot of the choices will be sold out but i got 2 boxes of them
I'm shocked you got those, my company ordered enough for a store and we never saw them. But keep an eye on those as we had some reports they were oil based as acrylics kept turninng into goop on them but gstudio refused to say anything about the binder and then has been dark since his company was found out for violating import laws by declaring everything for personal use and not business, and then failing to list that his paints were hazardous materials(which require special clearance)
lacquer based doesnt actually mean much as you have oil lacquers and acrylic lacquers
IE most automotive laquers are oil based
Shark Squig is getting sharky
Magnets then!!
Dropped a leg while assembling, meaning I had to crawl around on the floor for half an hour with a torch
dont fuck it up then
if you dont fuck it up, then you wont fuck it up
xD
i dropped a 2mm in length inquisitorial rosette
and just said fuck it and used a book instead cause i didnt want to find it
haha
Fuck it you ball
My American ass misunderstood “torch” so I literally thought you were searching for it with a stick on fire
Flashlight
You were using a flashlight
I’m actually a 12th century peasant, so I was indeed using a flaming torch to search for the leg.
i got them a year ago but yeah good product tho
A 12th century peasant would use an oil lamp like this. Imposter!
womp womp
Anybody got a magnetized leman russ? Shits so hard for me to do for some reason
I just friction fit the sponsons, and use blu-tack for the turret gun
The back cloth piece of one of my warsuits has gone missing
I have no idea how it went missing
So now one of my warsuits will have an exposed butt unless I find some idea to handle this
green stuff or milliput??
my understanding is green stuff capes is the easiest thing to do learn
Haven't even considered blue tack
Gonna have to try it, thanks
He looks like a Greg
Bro thinks I can afford oil
A torch with tallow will suffice
IT HAS ARRIVED
Hype
Now which 3 heavy weapons do I build
So in total I have:
1 Shadowsword Titanicus (Baneblade Box)
1 Squad of Guardsmen Box
1 Squad of Bullgryns Box
1 Chimera Box
1 Sentinel Box
1 Heavy Weapons Team Box
1 Start Collecting Box
(I think 10 Guardsmen ,1 Heavy Weapon Team , 1 Commissar and 1 Leman Russ?)
(All Pre 9th Ed)
Question is what to throw together to play my first match, hobby kinda started out as just collecting neat warhammer figurines but now with more free time I actually wanna play a small scale skirmish or maybe killteam.
Guardsmen players I ask for your aid!
kill team is pretty easy, I never played it but its a small model count game so Im sure you can make a kill team out of all that stuff you have.
check all the kill teams available because I think there are like 3 guardsman ones.
i have a kill team box coming because I need it for kitbash parts :3
Kriegers (which I dont like) Kasrkin and Catachans.
So most likely Kasrkin. Unless I can use any of my current models for Killteam games.
that would probably be your best bet, but if you are just playing with your frens or at a store you can probably use the guardsmen models you have as proxies
kill team usually has every character have a special weapon essentially
dont know the specifics of those guardsmen kits but here is an example kasrkin kill team
you can kinda see how they have every guards special weapon pretty much haha
I think I have uh...
8 Lasguns a plasma and a GL?
In my Infantry squad?
Id have to check later.
Pre 8th Ed Guardsman dont exist anymore
That was a gift from a friend
its a big kit haha, im building a rhino today myself
I just need to figure out where I left out on my Shadowsword
in terms of points though, I dont think its very many
My chimera and sentinel are built and primed but just need paint now.
not counting the baneblade which is like 700 or something right? haha
I still dont know what pattern to give my vehicles.
here I go reinstalling Dawn of War II and DOW 1 to check the cadian 110th Pallette ingame
So I looked it up
in new recruit
(free online army builder thats pretty good)
all the stuff you have is 1180 points
half of which is the baneblade
so you can pretty much play a 500 or 1000 point game
i cant promise your team will be competitive cause i know nothing about your army but you DO have the points between everything you have
Guessed as much.
honestly its not the worst team at 500 points. you have a mix of a little bit of everyting which is probably what other people at 500 points are gonna have
having the tanks could make it hard if you play other new players and they have ZERO anti tank units
which as a newb has never played a game, I hear is a problem for newbies
one just has tanks and the other doesnt so one side just face rolls because tanks are REALLY strong in 10th edition
😄
Lance of desolation ready for duty...
This one is beautiful! By Dorn the emperor will be pleased ^^
Thanks for your kind words brother, first attempt at nmm, it was pretty hard but i'm happy with the result
Keep up the good work battlebrother! For the crusade!
i love seeing so many people building those titan kits now. we had a guy back in high school that played at our lfgs that custom built a lot of them. the only options then were very limited from forge world, and even then it was only like 2 or 3 variants
size difference b/w any of them and regular troop choices is still cool to see
yep, 3d printing has been great for the titan scene
totally. its such a boon for the entire mini hobby. its nuts
where?
I do like some of the 3d printed titans but I had to get the forge world one, I wanted one since I was 12
100% feel that. last time i played in 6e i built up a tyranid army full of the 2e hormagaunts that look like xenomorphs. and the cooler tyranid warriors. used to love all the old nid models
yeah guy I knew was a nut for nids back in the 6e era, he had the biotitan as well... thing was op af back then
always wanted a full metal cadian army though. only have a few models. the flak armored ones are cool but damn. those floppy shoulderpads
won't say things were better back then but damn there's something charming about the hand sculpted stuff
bit of red there
its just lighting.. nothing to see here
With the xenomorph on the knee this feels like a big art board you’d find on the side of a van at a carnival or fair
That’s awesome though
dont dis the waltzers like that
I'll accept that as a valid excuse
I’m not :D
After restoring a Caravaggio I became very jaded with everything, his work is just so... advanced for the time.
we didnt see anything even remotely close in style and technique for about a hundred years after he died...
OFF TO THE MINES FOR YOU
Gonna do all ultramarine named captain
i do have some green stuff but its the butt cover thing thats missing which is rather big and somewhat detailed
i dunno yet how to make it work
i am also thinking about making maybe a broken down warsuit
like ripped off legs or an arm or so
depends what you want them for
mortars with leontus or creed for fields of fire imo is best
lascannons in regular infantry squads or by themselves
I actually don't know as I never played and I put a list of what I own below.
I'm playing Cadians most likely Mechanized/Armored Doctrine wise as I'm imitating the 110th Cadian.
i kinda wish sororitas would have lascannons for the warsuits or so
would be kinda funny to have
Huh????
My daughter painted her first nids
Yooo those look amazing.
Fucken 10/10
Holy shit those look good
When we were in Montreal last year near Xmas, and visited their Warhammer store in one of the malls. She (she is 11) learned how to dry brush from one of their expert painters who was teaching someone else at the time. It was an awesome way to wait for my wife when she was shopping 😛
She is also the reason I am going to be playing nids as she picked the faction I play with. She said they looked cooler than the other factions and looked harder to paint than Space Marines
Hell yeah. Absolutely wholesome and fucking adorable. Hope you enjoy playing the nids and maybe her more in the future as well if she paints/plays more
Happy thanksgiving y’all
So her and my wife will be doing the painting and I am to do the "playing". I have issues with my nerves so mini painting isn't something that is easy for me.
Fair enough. Sounds like great family bonding
Sounds very fun. A guard and lamenter player though I may be. I hope you eat many a marine, man and Xenos with your army
She says that "they will rip and tear till they are gone"
Damm. Now we know who REALLY almost killed the lamenters
If we went with Space marines, she wanted to paint them as Salamanders...
She has fucken amazing choice of factions. Be proud of her. “VULKAN LIVES”
My wife wants me to get at least a combat patrol of Battle Sisters so who knows where I'll end up with.
Can never really go wrong with some variety. Sister can be fun. I got some who are black and yellow
I think I posted this already but this really helped me learn 10th ed
However I'm very open to other resources and guides out there, not new to wargaming in general but the last edition of 40k I played (on sand using rocks and a White Drawf mag) was like 2nd or 3rd.
It’s long video but midwinter minis has a good video explaining everything you need to know quite well
I envy you
I'm not gonna let losing my combat patrol break me goddamnit
Getting shit ready to recast 20 new tzaangors
I'll need to get new SoTs and an infernal master but fuck it we ball
Nothing turned up btw people in my city are total lowlives I never had any hope
My only solace is the chance they might try to resell them and I get to physically take my minis back
I don’t envy myself, but I thank you for the compliment lol
I struggle with my Cadian vehicles
Airbrush or stippling with a makeup brush works wonders
Well im stuck to normal painting.
I just dont have any idea what sort of camo to give me 110th Boys
Also the Transfer sheet has not 110th Cadian Decal I realized
I'm sad...
might have to splice 2 decals together
Hey, sorry if I am butting into an active conversation, but I'm a person new to the tabletop and what have and got to ask. Why do so many people on the tabletop seem to dislike/hate it when other players use Blood Ravens?
I have no idea..
I just hate the blood ravens cause of the dawn of War games
where they actively kill guardsmen cause "Haha funny human lives don't matter to us"
Oh also they killed one of my favourite imperial Generals so I guess I'm just petty
lol
Oh! Well, thank you for giving me an answer mate! Also which general are you talking about?
Lukas Alexander.
He only appeared in Dawn of War Dark Crusade
but his voice acting was top notch and also...
The speech is from the game Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade.
Music in this video
Song: Rome Is Falling
Artist: Civil War
Remember that's my reason why I just despise that specific chapter.
I actually don't know why people apperently hate on them in tabletop.
Wait it just clicked... is there an Imperial General Mini?
i think that they are fairly popular. they don't have rules on the tabletop though
you have to make a regular Space Marines army and just say they are blood ravens
I think that may have been some sort of serious lesson from the universe bc I literally closed tab from typing this, opened facebook on my phone and I saw my minis getting resold, decent chance I actually get everything back
Not even bullshitting maybe the emperor does protect
I wouldn't even pay for em.
And just say hey those are mine and they went missing.
Then again I am quite draconian >~>
Oh I don't intend to lmao
I have more than enough documentation to get police involved, dude flogged them from a public train too so there's guaranteed footage of it too
And made no effort to return them before selling which falls firmly into the legality of stealing
Where I'm from anyways
Go get em lad! Knock his block off!
Quick question
I heard that one can take only up to 3 of the same unit on the battle field
but I want to have a mass guardsmen spam army
if thats the case, then I can take DKOK, Infantry Squad and Heavy Weapon Team individually right
since they are all different units
Good i hope everything goes your way
I would rather my wallet get stolen than my minis it HAS to be a cardinal sin
You can take up to 6 battleline, which infantry squad and DKOK are. Heavy squad is not a battleline though
But you can put heavy weapon squads into infantry squads. So i personally have 6 cadian shock troop squads, and an infantry squad blob with 2 heavy weapons in it.
ohhhh thats nice
what would you say will be good for infantry spam IG army
DKOK with Take Cover Order, DKOK Marshal and Psyker attached to them can get up to 3+/4++/6+ FNP so I'd love to mass spam them XD
In my opinion, 60 is bare minimum for any army. 80 is what I prefer. For spam I'm not entirely sure sadly. I haven't played a full 40k game yet, just combat patrol and mini sized games so just take my words with a grain of salt
ah so 3 full squad of guardsmen is mandatory
thanks, new to this and I'd love to know as much as I can before collecting
DKOK and Infantry are battleline so you can take 6 of each, and 3 HWT
You can also fit 2 heavy weapons in an infantry squad so that means even more big guns in the horde
but commissar and psyker is a character so I can only bring 3?
of each yes
bit of advice from a vet Guard player
Once you have squads put together get:
A) movement trays for them
and
B) paint the rims of the bases different colors to denote each squad
Like I have guard with green, yellow, red, and blue rims so I can tell them all apart
ah
thanks a lot
and for leman russes and armoured units
how good are they
I asked it to another person and they answered that taking less than 3 leman russ is heresy
lemans are a key part of Guard and always will be, but times change so loadouts change too
it depends
running no Dorns? yeah bring 3 lemans
Running a Dorn? Realistically you only need 2
from what I heard, 3 Leman Russ with plasma cannon works 99% of the time
