I wish I had a better camera to take proper mini photos
this is nmm without correct lighting or a good backdrop
and this is a canvas with fairly good nmm techique
I'm trying to upgrade my painting because I'm caught inbetween a few different styles right now
yeah I have a mirrorless and a cellphone
dm me, I can help you find your own if you want
I'm off this entire month due to medical leave so i dont have much to do past some basic academic papers I need to finish
Let me know if you need some paper editing help lol
if you understand microscopy data, then maybe
Hell no
LMFAO
like this was a decent tabletop mini I did recently- but a lot of it is cheap tricks done with pre shading, contrast, and drybrushing
Anyone interested in a Warhound titan? Send me a message.
I'm trying to consider ways to take the next step with my minis
I've been painting for YEARS but the allure of contrasts have slowed me down
and I have a bad habit of being content
contrasts are useful because you can get way more utility out of a transparent paint than an opaque one
I am quite fond of them
I’m very interested
I've recently fallen in love with Kimeras paints
mans about to get FLEECED
I just don't want to build it. And honestly i dont think it's actually forge world.
I've bought so many FW recasts on ebay recently
it's hilarious cause they're normally better quality than FW
The FW ones are lower quality
Was going to list it on ebay as a recast for like 250-300
I want to get FW sets but there so expensive
Yeah thats a good way to get sued
like GW will actively go after people for even saying proxy
There's so many recasters on ebay that have been on there since like 2006 on the same account and are fine tbh
they just don't admit it's a recast ofc
Now obviously it's illegal and piracy etc
Piracy is the least serious crime
There's a guy I buy from all the time on ebay, he just primes them shittily and lists them all as used. He's been recasting for YEARS on there.
That sounds like good money
Yea, dude makes a killing-illegal as shit though
Well then ill just throw it out then. Thanks.
I wouldnt recommend that
You can just sell it lol
Someone will 100 percent buy it
just put it up for 200 and say you got it at a yard sale
literally ^
That's what all the recaster sellers do
"this is used"
"i do not knowingly sell recasts"
etc etc
Could be worst
What’s a good resin printer
best red ive dealt with so far
mars 4 is pretty good unless you want a larger one, elegoo is just... hit or miss with their printers
whats funny is kimera paints are super low quality too, so imagine some of the reds that exist out there
I just want something where I can print custom parts for minis
mars 4 is pretty good for that, and reletively inexpensive
damn really? I have a hard time even finding Kimera's red around me cause it sells so fast
its like 300 but competes with dlps in terms of resolution
I just love the bright red pigmentation
rate that red
above
its also an ink
very bright
I like to paint bright bold red and drybrush black onto it, works for my red corsairs
Chaos space marine pirates, bright red armor with black details
These guys?
Pmuch
that is fucking bomb
Started work with Vassal, sadly I don't have the finances to spend on Minis
Current concept and wip on terminator chaplain...
What're you using for primer?
Mechanicus Standard Grey and Black Templar Contrast
Ok. That chest piece looked like raw plastic in the picture. Didn't see the mechanicus grey.
Ye it's sometimes hard to see ^^
I meant they produce very harsh areas of colour, like an old Technicolor movie. I have never found the mysticism in painting minis in all the years I've been doing it.!!
some people do, its weird
Lower part of mini and base nearly done.
b e a utiful work
lovely boy
Thank you
. Dont honestly think its some of my best work tho
Me and the bois heading to the lego store
@floral wind still having my old lego star wars kits boxed up in the attic ^^

Mad jealous rn
I miss my old lego star wars kits
what would you say if I told you I stripped them because they werent good enough?
XD oldest i have is the separatist battle tank from episode 1 xD
I'd be sad, but I would also get it because I know you strive to be as good as you can get
Pog. I remember owning the og Grievous and Anaking fighters but alas they are lost to time
yeah, plus those 3 peices only took me about 15 minutes total, I was just testing out some ideas
damn you paint FAST
Ehh, not really
just faster than mini painters because most of them arent trained as artists
most of the time painting takes is thinking, and I'm just processing that information much faster
most of my time is spent hyping myself up before i make a move that potentially botches the idea
lmao
Pance
Lesgoo
I don't usually like that variant of Librarian but this kinda changed my mind
I'll keep ya posted as it goes! Gonna try to do some cool stuff on the cloak
One of my friends I found out plays warhammer 40k and has invited me to join him next time they get together
I'm so excited
Fantastic work! I'm working on Venomthropes with that scheme and added some purple glaze to the tentacle parts
nice
I don't know how it is overthere, but where I live now is called the tomb of the Sci-Fi
so finding someone who knows 40k is harder than finding a blue user who does not abuse counter spells
Yeah I had the same thought of like "Bro you spent wayy too much time on that bottom half to just cover it up when you've gotta prime the top" lmao
Also can someone explain to me why the official GW chaos spawn kit looks like freesculpted amorphous clay when these kits exist?
Spawn and horrors have the most insane ludo-narrative dissonance when it comes to them actually fulfilling their proposed design
because they were, its a super old kit
Its so disappointing man, their lore is super cool and they insist on recycling the same models over and over for the games and the TT
GW is cheap
they could refresh and make a lot of new models
but they dont
why? because it costs money
Time for a power warp! This just arrived in the mail!
I mean, I don't know a lot about warhammer 40k
but doesn't chaos spawn lack a fixed form?
Like, technically you can get yourself a pile of clay, make it look like some sort of a nuclear-polluted-abomination-spider and smack that on a base
colour the thing up, add some details according to the god's "blessing" it got and call it chaos spawn?
How much that cost ya?
It was part of a trade.
A friend of mine was cleaning out their garage, found it and ton of old Ork models. Traded them a brand new Warhammer Age of Sigmar set for that, Ghaz, some Nobz from 1996, 2 sets of burna boyz, 6 meganobz, a set of flash gitz, and a newer set of nobz.
Hell yea
What color did you use on the "scales"?
2nd killteam member done
This gives me some "Astartes" vibes... Like a mix of Xeno Psyker and Space Marine ^^
I like the combination. Just keep up the work^^
Aye thanks dog
Averland sunset over a chaos black > wraithbone primer
Then seraphim sepia shade, and white scar drybrush highlight
with that rag thing in the background it looks like you used your actual blood to paint the red, which would be thematically fitting
Da blood makez uz even fasta!
Nah, I am using a new acrylic ink, and was testing it
holy throne
My toilet is holy, yes.
is the boltgun from the old marines
4 more to paint then ima start learnin kill team 🔥
🔥
cause I don't remember boltguns looking like them
Naw, a bolt carbine from a reiver kit that I chopped the foregrip off of
ah
My inability to finish projects and some half baked red boys on my desk
also a lot of dust
Progress update
Big bonk stick
the black reach warboss is undeniably the best sculpt
Rogal Dorn battle tank is almost finished.
Your half baked looks better than my finished
thanks, it's been so long they have been sitting there and I don't feel like painting. it's not a competition I'm sure yours look just as good or better
Wip experimenting with cork for the first time
Thanks! I got it as a trade..
It’s time to paint
I am very curious about those paints
Got a question for people that collect Nids / Brood Brothers
Anyone think the Brood Brothers could be used as old Cadians?
Minus the heads ofcourse.
probably
they dont seem all that different
Red, Black and Brown are so inconsistent because brush was a little watery
I might pick some up for a review now that my new hegman gauge is in
Also do not use the ultramarine violet paint, if its accurate and they are using PV3, then thats actually incredibly toxic
thats Triphenylmethane Phosphotungstomolybdic acid salt
its basically a shitty dye called Methyl violet
Man these look amazing.
IM honestly way too anxious rn to paint my 8th Edition Cadians.
I dont wanna ruin the last ones I have before im forced to buy 9th Ed.
Thanks ^^
Further steps done but still wip...
Squig king
How would you balance him.
Anyone got ideas or suggestions?
So I have 3 Squads of 8th Ed Guardsmen, trying to source more but if I end up having to buy 9th ed.. I wanna make the 8th ed Look more so like "Veterans" any ideas how I could reflect that via painting?
Some clean up and weathering still to be done.. but 95% ready.
The bug is more yellow
What are you using for the metal paint? Asking for my Imperial Knights
I'd make him 1000 pts with 50 splittable ranged attacks 20 wounds, and he resets wounds to full on melee kills.
I'd pair him with a similar 1000 points Shas'o Kais (Firewarrior FPS) and propose they have some specific anti chaos bonuses as a 2 unit army
Traitor guard?
I like that but instead of that I would give him an Army of one or last man standing bonus to attack and defense rolls if hse is enough tiles distance away from allies or if he is the last survivor of your squad.
How do you calculate points for a army
No
using the munitorum field manuals. They give you the up to date points for each unit, just add it out and do the math from those
Thanks
Would’ve fooled me lmao
This final game in this campaign was such a dramatic one. Monstrous Tyranids vs Imperial Knights. It was a Knock-out, drag-out, monster mash of steel and chitin, gore and hydraulic fluid littered the field. Big damage, heartpounding endurance. And it ended in the most appropriate way, with a final blow from the monstrous tyranids, detonating the last Paladin who stood bravely.
So many swings back and forth, and a lot of good plays.
thats a lot of knights
They died for their house, and for the Imperium
"Whoah there you brought six models, is that a horde army?"
(Competitive 2k lists are running 6 armigers and 1 questoris and 1 assassin lmao)
Lmao
Basically done. Little touches later. For Nid-vember!!!
Meanwhile my 2k list has 2 Cerastus, 5 Armigers, and 2 assassins
Another one down, tried out AK snow terrain and it's a much better deal than the citadel technical snow
When I have the time and money recreating nurgles garden would be sick
I'm using baking soda mixed with pva glue for snow. Looks fine and costs next to nothing
Looking good I like the helmet what about the ... what are they called again... satchels? On his chest
Anime guy I got gifted and didn't like so I painted over and added snow terrain base
Satchels, tactical pouches. Whatever, gives em that look of a solider ye?
Thanks yo
My dumb head couldn't think of the word pouches.
Aye we all be slow in the brain from time to time lol
I bought a cheap Matt brown from a local store for my sister's gun belts and pouches
Fits really well too
Also works on wood decently
Brown is a color I can trust with hobby paints. Never buy cheap red and blue tho, I still have nightmares
Golden sisters look sick
brown is an easy color, but a lot of browns contain lead. Reds... Red is a "buy professional or dont use red" type thing.Same with white and yellow. Hobby companies really try super hard to force opacity over everything and they do it with the cheapest pigments out there
and that just doesnt work with Mono azos as the opacifiers fuck with the pH balance too much and create an unstable paint
Isn’t there a brown made of dead people
Yes, mummy brown
but good luck getting that
Nah i don’t want to get haunted by paint
dont worry, even the tubes that exist are in musuems or private collections
Feels like a random ass hobby store might have it
Maybe, you never know
paint does contain human skin sometimes
Yummy
that wood look turned out nicely
Terminator Chaplain Cunradt ready to crush some skulls...
If you've worked in a lab with spectroscopy, then you'll find that there's more or less a constant cloud of keratin anywhere humans are
All that's left is five chosen, and I'll have everything ready for Atlanta
Yeah I wasnt including that, paint machines are nasty and really tear out flesh easily.
I'd buy that ngl
thank you
isnt them containing lead illegal nowadays or am i getting something mixed up
thank you too
all my sisters are basically based off of celestine as their own order
Nope. Lead based house paint was made illegal, but the pigments containing lead not so much, really the only thing for house paint in terms of pigments that was banned is lead white
Wanna go over that red 1 or 2 more times, can still see the black through. Other than that fucking love it
Actually, disregard that. Noticed it was the nuln oil xD
How tf do you do skin!!
Trying to find proxies is so frustrating, there's always something just off about them
Like I finally found a good Aeldari proxy set..... but then this is their Dark Reapers
Yeah I've yet to see a single actually good looking proxy. I don't think most of the proxy modellers get the GW design formula
proprotions or in general?
lot of youtube channels are promoting Ravaged Star right now, cause it was made by another Youtube channel, but they're fucking hideous
over busy minis
That is the most obvious fault in most
And yeah the ravaged star is a bit eh over all, very busy design as you said
I will say this Aeldari set I found has some nice stuff, it's one of the best proxy sets I've seen for 40k
Which is again a very common fault in 3rd party minis
They're nice but don't really look 28mm/heroic scale
they 100% are the files rendered nicely
I really like the Mezgike deathguard models he makes, but they're more so reimagined models rather that just proxies or copies of existing models
It's an under water dredge theme instead of the usual zombies and disease
Meant more the proportions and such, very action figure like instead of tabletop models if you know what I mean 😄
ah, gotcha
But they're nice indeed, clean design and not too busy
......... This might be the coolest Imp Knight Proxy I've ever seen
I don't like the head but the building on top is fun
This is like when mecha pilots open up their cockpits and expose themselves to gunfire just to shit talk / monologue
"I prefer to spit down on them before curshing them under hoof"
non-cone head Custodes
oh, and I guess the pulpit isn't the control throne, the head is just recessed Cherno Alpha style
For a second i thought they had clown noses
Sounds like something a Solitaire would 100% do
For purple skin it's just druchii violet over wraithbone spray.
White scars be getting a power ranger
Pity it's forgeworld.
There is no more forgeworld
Ok, pity it's resin/finecast/not plastic.
I thought all new models were gonna be plastic
Though I don't exactly buy the official stuff so I don't pay it much mind
Why would Deamon fulgrim be resin, and this guy plastic?
No idea, size differences?
Not saying you're wrong, looks like lots of HH stuff is Resin
I don't even understand why HH is a separate game though so I'm not exactly knowledgeable
all HH character models are resin
and it's because it allows for more intricate detail compared to plastic molds
then why do people seem to hate it?
the more a mould used for resin kits is used the more it gets worn down so if you get unlucky and get a kit made with a mould at the end of it's life cycle you might get more deviations like warping or bubbles. FW has decent quality control so it's pretty rare nowadays plus the new kits are CRISP as fuck but it used to be a pretty big problem. You'd always get a new kit as compensation if you'd get a faulty one too. There is also the fact that resin bends more easily so large rigid pieces that you'd want to be straight would some times come out a bit twisted or bent, you can heat the resin and bend it to it's original shape but it is again some extra work
and people in general don't like working with resin compared to plastic
and it's more expensive
Thanks for the explanation!
I just watched a vid of someone assembling a Reaver Titan and he had to soak some pieces in hot water to bend that back to fit.
Wish that worked for resin prints. Lol
I don’t play so maybe I’m mixed up
But isn’t there also a general worry that GW can just pull a bunch of these models from the 40k data sheets
what do you mean
Well sorta yeah, they merged the stores
the models are still there listed as expert kits or something
they did start the merge a few months back already when they moved all the primarchs to the GW store
And knights, it's weird to see Cerastus and Acastus alongside the vanilla Knights
Also, hot take: carpet bombing areas that are meant to be glowy with technical paint doesn't look good
Like this, it quickly goes from "glowing blue bit" to "I squirted some baby blue paint on the gun arms"
i like the look of these better than GWs repentia
i know they have armor on but they look cool
Omg, a proxy that's less horny?!
yea
Finally I started painting again... but instead of focusing on finishing 1 csm legionary at a time I decided to batch base paint 5 of them. Which I will later batch trim
I say it's the better approach
Less burnout
That's what I do for squads
rather than glossing over and spending too much time in one model and get burned again
batch paint for warmup
I think Anvil Industry proxies are pretty good
plus you can mix and match the parts however you want
Painting trim is pain
You say that but I enjoy painting every individual round in the reaper chaincannon belt
So satisfying
Thing that fucks me up the most is painting hazard stripes though... I hate those things... and I paint iron warriors
Do you do the watercolor trick?
Hate this too
I actually love painting hazard stripes...
I just watched a great tutorial on using some white watercolor paint to safely put down the lines of. Design before freehanding in the deets.
Watercolor comes of with a bit of water so it's easy to correct the lines and then remove them after
Gaming
Sounds like I need to pick up some of those watercolor brushes that hold water.
I sketch on the black using grey
Same
I love hazard stripes but I just mess them up... look at that ugly leg stripe
round parts are more difficult to get straight anyways, but practice will make it perfect
Yeah but I want to be good at it now
Hmm I can't seem to find them in that picture
i hear that every time
Those are some wild hazard stripes
Cheers!
Just did some right now, first model i tried doing hazard stripe pattern
Hell yeah
Two months of waiting, it’s time to get painting.
Fuckin clean
I wouldn’t recommend these, I ordered a squad of these from Etsy and when they arrived they were terrible quality and incredibly flimsy. I wasn’t even able to work with them, half broke while cleaning them.
that's just down to the printer
/seller
I have some stuff I found from one seller to be shite and from another to be really great
yea multiple people have the STL
First pass on the trims
bad resin, bad printer, someone who is thinking they can make easy quick money
wish more models had the bigass chain swords
Quality control on the 3d-printed models market is wildly unpredictable. Find reputable sellers, or local folks to build a relationship with.
don't be shocked if rando69 on Etsy sells you some brittle water-washable chunks.
It’s entirely done
Time to bring it to a tabletop match
that blue is STUNNING
Buggé
Buggé
@rare hornet
Hive Gorgon?
Jormangundr
Oh okay! Looks nice... Something like this i want to do as "leftovers" on the Space Marine minis from leviathan box that have some tyranid leftovers on their base ^^
Yeah that’s always a nice looking idea
Honestly I thought the emissary would be bigger
She looks so good!!!
Thanks
I need ideas
I'm concepting ideas for my Knight Lancer, and I've decided I want to do an anti-aeldari theme to it
call it Elf-Bane, make the tilt shield crest a shattered Asuryani symbol, and have some cracked Wraithknight spirit stones displayed as trophies
but how should I do said trophies
I don't wanna put them right on the tilt shield, but they should still be displayed prominently
Have them chained to the shoulder armor? Or the shin armor? To show they are not even worthy to be on the same level as the Knight
Hang them from the waist like a tabard
After like a three month hiatus, I’m finally able to start painting again so here is the main things I did
I don’t really post here but there if anyone would like this stuff it would be the people here
Thanks!
that blue IS indeed stunning
I'd even say its dazzling
also, is that from legiones titanicus?
The idea is that they're the main foe of this knightly order, and there'd be equal parts respect and hate
I like the chained or tabbard idea but not sure how to make it look good
They're not something you could just hang on cloth since they're big half orbs they'd likely pull the fabric taut and look unseemly, maybe a metal plate on chains but would need to find some good orintable chains
Speaking of print, these stones will look gorgeous cause I'm gonna print them in a rich transparent red resin I have, score them with a crack, then hit them with a glossy lacquer that makes that resin look like fucking cherry jolly rancher
Thanks again, yeah it's for titanicus
Fair! A better idea then;
If you got some chains that are normally used for jewelry, could have them hanging off weapons.
I'm getting some good metallic paints and have a resin printer so just gonna use printed chains but that's a good idea
I might also just get a full bodied kite shield instead of the wire frame ion kite shield for the lancer in which case I think the stones should go right on it, especially if some of them are intact, using your knife eared buddy's eternal soul as a shield
Gonna build a traitor guard army, i want them to have the shiny plates like mobian 6th. What colors/techniques do I want for that dark chrome look
What even is that it looks dope
This reminds me of Dawn of War I: Tartarus PDF pattern ^^
Reaver Battle Titan, Adeptus Titanicus scale
I'd say black Chrome paint with lots of weathering highlights, so air brush chrome to base it then dry brush it up with a silver or something which will make the edges pop out, and then add grime
Old model Nobz, new in the army
love em
Freehanding is fun! And totally painless. /s
My first skaven are done only 93 more to go
I wish GW would bring back BFG
wowow! very very nice!
practicing some digital freehand with the new MS paint
The beginnings of my new Guard army, theyre very loyal soldiers to the carrion lord
Has anybody played Blackstone Fortress? Need some rule clarification
needs an alternate flag, but looking good
The plan's to paint it up in cadian or whatever colours and then to do heretic graffiti and damage to it, make it look like a trophy taken from a battle
I love the cultist sergeant
Have you seen tabletop times chaos guard
They are amazing

God I love guardsmen
oooo I'm so looking at this now thank you
thank you so much too
Some of my deathguard stuff
Leadbelcher, the nuln oil, then a gloss varnish would get you pretty close I think. That said, I think they're more black than chrome on a lot of their gear, so you'll prob want to prime with chaos black.
dont even look at hobby paints unless you're going enamels, look for lascaux studio bronze
its expensive
You want alluminum, you can do a lot with it and its one of the few paints that use actual metal and not just a metalized pigment or mica
honestly i'd say instead of nuln, if you want a dark dark metal, use ratling grime contrast
my personal mix for dark chrome is mars black mixed into alluminum paint, then if I need darker I use more mars black over it
i also mix some gloss into it
@plush swift can you post some of your work? I've not actually seen any outside of those knight plates you posted recently
plus I'm going off of those that may only have access to or own citadel paints
I dont really have much 40k related stuff and a lot of the other things I have done as of late are abysmally low end to the point that people have actively judged my skills because "you talk a big game but paint like shit"
so I avoid posting them
I get ya
I paint like shit
dont got much time between the wife and school
So it cant be that bad
🙂
least not as bad as mine
aye but the issue is I have a doctorate in art and I am a full time artist who lives alone in a major city, so naturally one would assume I have some measure of skill, which people tend to over estimate
Meh, dont let idioti ruin the hobby you enjoy
Its not just one person, its been over entire subreddits, discord communities, streamers, youtubers, etc
What a bunch of idioti
its a community issue, they do this with all insider artists
Amico just ignore those haters
have fun with the hobby, you paint it for YOUR enjoyment, irrelivant of others
like I have literally had streamers get their fans to harass me because I use professional grade paints and not hobby paints
Thats horrible
Im so sorry that you experienced that
Those guys are jerks and the scrunge of this community
meh, not the worst thing to happen with the mini painting community and me
The emperor would not be pleased in their behavior
I've been assaultes 9 times, had people show up to my house, and people try and get me fired
why have people assaulted you over minis?
the people showing up to my house literally was because I corrected someone about what a varnish was
Its a plastic toy that we all over paid for
trained artist, I supposedly am not allowed to be in this hobby because I will ruin it for others
idk why people take it so seriouslu
Those people are idioti
Who cares
My friends a professional artist
I love his minis
its that simple
because they think they can make a living off commission work
and when people like me come in, they'll be out of a job
Commission painting ain’t the way to go if you want to make rent XD
It’ll cover some hobby expense, sure
But you’ve gotta be top-tier to make it full-time
Miniature commission?
hell no
my last one was 1200 for mini painting
and that was a titan, I made nothing on that commission, I think it averaged at 20/h
sounds like a lot, until you find out thats below living wage where I am
Yeah, that’s a fairly standard rate for the average commission painter
I normally charge a base of 30/h
People underestimate expenses too, for self employment
Not to mention the SS and Medicare tax liability
exactly
Technically all hobby purchases can be a tax expense if you’re making enough to cover it at that point. The IRS will get sus if you’re regularly taking a loss
its not uncommon for artists to take losses until tax breaks happen
Yeah, for sure. This advice is moreso for the average side-gig hobbyist who goes into commission painting
Small income and large losses on otherwise luxury goods can be seen as evasion
A studio or full-timer making a more substantial income per year but taking a net loss is going to be seen as more understandable
I dont understand taxes, I just avoid them using legal loopholes when I can
Ah, lol
I have a background in accounting and tax work, and took a law degree after
i just have a lot of family who are lobbiests
Laughing at everyone mixing krieg and steel Legion whilst Im doing the same but also with cadians
That’s one thing I like about guard a lot is you can mix and match and do wild stuff with
I mean, of course, there’s space marine flavor under the sun, but guard feels different in this way and I’m not fully sure why
I love the feeling when new paint come in the male
phrasing
I’m to tired to worry about that shit
Well my Leman Russ TC managed to kill farsight and three crisis suits by itself. I want to give it a commendation paint job or detail. Any suggestions?
Guys I think I found the sexiest pattern for my future krieg army
paint kill markers on its barrel?
whÆre did you FIND THIS
good old pv19 quinacridone violet
Might freehand “Didn’t see that coming” on the Tank
Lmao
have fun
My enginseer for my inquisitorial guard army
hes so chubby
What does this do
Lets you thin paints into washes without ruining the consistency and basically turning it watery
Mix a paint into it at like 2:1 ratio of medium to paint and you can get a really light wash/glaze into any colour you'd like essentially,
also citadel shades and constrast paints are more or less the same thing with different amounts of pigment so you can use medium to make a contrast behave a bit more like a shade
So you thin out the pigment but the paint still feels slightly thick and wont just exclusively fall into the crevices like a shade tends to
it doesnt do that
its too thick
its a glaze medium
Huh
basically it slows the paint drying a bit
so you can glaze something and blend it
What’s the point in that
Oh
Extra working time
instead of you know, 10 seconds to maybe 2 minutes, you have around 10 minutes or so
basically any of those GW mediums, dont but, you can get the same medium from a professional brand for way cheaper
I think you can get a 118ml bottle from liquitex for like $5 or so
the contrast medium? just glaze medium without a retarder
so just use glaze medium
I got the medium for free
They put it in my order by accident
oh thats perfect then
Yeah
It’s the second time they did something like that
sounds like they are doing it on purpose at that point
They do shit like this
they just threw a handful of paint in there?
Yeah
I ordered 1
hmm... sounds like a store I might have to order from
It’s a Portland store
Shipping might be nuts depending how far away you at from Oregon
not really
shipping is generally pretty cheap
Damn
Oh I finally watched that thinning video everyone keeps raving about
90% of it is just bad information about paint chemistry and massive misunderstandings...
and misusing terms constantly
like coverage
i never thin my paints lmao
I dont either, but I use ink
whats a good ink brand
holbein or golden
when I do use normal paint, its generally golden
I have some other brands here and there but I really dont thin it much
I have no reason to since I know how to work the paint in to get a smooth coat
which one? There's so many
the one from brush stroke painting guides, dude tries to make it sound super scientific bit he gets all of that science completely wrong
the outcome is correct, but the information is really bad
Drill those barrels 🤣
Lookin' good those LoV minis.... i will do some BT minis and will return to mine LoV after that
First krieg tank ready to serve the emperor
Which Battallion?
The good one
In Reddit
Damn this model is so fun to paint
these guys are looking clean!!!!!!!
Appreciated
Trying to think how to paint my carcharodon Chaplain
Why did they get rid of this dude?
anyone have tips for how to seperate bonded plastic without damaging the plastic?
trying to assemble some tempestus scions and the hotshot lasguns ae being difficult lol
Using Tyranid carapace as both extra armor and trophy? Now that is bad ass.
Pretty neat color scheme ngl. The blood looks cool as well
carcharodons & Hive Fleet Jormungandr
Second pass on the trims
Hey I am just asking..
what thing can I proxy for solar auxillia from 40k to 30k?
like field ordnance for example
post orks
there isnt a way, the plastic has been welded together
best you can do is minimize damage
If that's a Gorgon carcass he's gonna regret strapping it to his body in about 20 mins when the toxic blood adapts to his physiology
Would y’all recommend the Horus Heresy kit? The 200 dong one
I like the bird helmets and the big ass robot suit in it
200 dongs you say? Is it a Slaanesh kit?
dong is vietnamese currency i think
LOL
Yeah sorry, bad joke
No it was good
genuinely made me spit my water
Based
I’m stuck between either getting the Horus Heresy kit or a Tech Priest
Because I love the Admech
Not the fat one though
Also not sure if it’s just Amazon but god is every Heresy kit so much more expensive than normal ones
Generally when considering any GW big box I ask myself 2 questions.
1: Do I really want every model in this box?
2: If there are some I don't want, ignoring their price is the box still cheaper then getting the rest individually?
If the answer to either is yes, then I think it's still worth it.
Typically box sets are cheaper than individual no?
Because worst case for anything you don't want, you can resell for some extra value, or keep for kitbashing/basing bits.
Yeah
I mean from what I’ve seen the only thing that doesn’t interest me is the tank, not because it’s bad but because I have no experience in painting them (still newer to painting minis)
Usually GW targets around $50 - 100 cheaper than buying individually
Yeah
I'm very interested in the Tyranid Christmas box because I own none of the models in it and it perfectly expands my Leviathan starter for nids. I'd be much less interested in a T'au box because I already own almost 1 of every T'au model.
You better hurry, it's sold out most places I've checked already.
Fair enough
I’m turned off from Tyranids
Don’t get me wrong they are dope as most factions in Warhammer but I just prefer the good old cyborgs in red cloaks
I do wanna expand into some of the Space Marine chapters however
Mainly the Space Wolves was it?
Love Vikings
Damn, should have checked my emails yesterday haha.
Oh well, I missed out on Farsight when his box came out. And tbh I really don't need more to add to my pile right now
They are. The Astra Militarum Box (2 Rogal Dorn Tanks, 20 Infantry and a Command Squad) are 275€ individually on GW, the Christmas Box comes in a 180€. You can get the Box for 144€ at local game stores that are not the official Warhammer stores.
Fair enough
I got mine at a FLGS for 144€. Individual pricing at the store would've been 226,50€, so I saved a good chunk compared to individual pricing and even comparing to Warhammer direct.
I’m only interested in the Admech boxes and Horus Heresy atm
Issue is I don’t need 20 more Skitari
Yeah, I get that. I don't care for Space Marines, so... Astra Militarum it is 😄 One can never have too many Guardsmen
I tried painting my Cadian Heavy Weapons and it’s horrible
I’m better at single model painting
Two of my Ultramarines
Those look nice though!
Appreciate it
I don’t have a proper picture built area so I try to use the sun as my lighting
Wanna see the Admech I’ve been working on?
no
Fair enough
you should post it anyways just to spite me
good
Are vallejo paints and inks good
some people like their paints, but their inks are garbage
just pure garbage
Based
I got there skin tone pack and it came with a thing of ink
i mean, you have it so use it but is bad compared to whats out there
What’s a good skin tone ink
Mix your own, its pretty easy, for white you just need 1 part burnt umber, 1 part pyrrole orange, 10 parts titanium white
and then mix in more of any of the above to modify it
now you want TRUE burnt umber and a lot of brands dont have that
golden does
I can not stress how good tgolden's burnt umber high flow is
its near flawless
Tanks
I can find flaws with any paint, I legit cant find much of a flaw with that one
maybe a little more matte would be nice
but sheen isnt a killer for me unless its something like matisse using too much gloss
Bro is the thinker
It seems it's back in stock in GW site, I just placed an order haha.
any way to make paint less watery fast if by accident i got one drop of water in too much?
or just wait?
add more paint
or wait, yea, if you have a hair dryer can try drying it while stirring it
a bit hard with citadel paint :D
add more paint , thats the only way
Does air temp matter for the citadel rattle cans
i would say very much so
i have retributor armor spray paint and it wants it to be around 20°C outside
it came out very grainy when i used it compared to the very clean normal paint
Damn
temp and moisture affect ALL spray cans
it affects all paint as a whole too
spray cans just dont have any control for it
and it was warm outside
How can I use them when it’s cold out
Nice
it genuinely made me not want to spray anymore minis
the grainy look doesnt work with my style
I mean you cna use it when its cold out, you just might get grainy textures, orange peeling, or cracking
now i have a full can of retributor gold sitting here
i got the grainy texture during summer
thats way you get an air brush
yeah it can happen during heat or cold
I have a airbrush but I’m scared to use it
cant afford one atm
even though i foolishly bought some paint that sadly only fully works if sprayed on
dont be? just wear a mask and call it a day
isnt the grainy texture from the base itself?
look second image
the rim doesnt have any texture on the base by default
and its the same on the minis legs
The metallic sprays you also need to shake for at least 20 minutes straight
generally I leave them on the mixer for about an hour
i might use the spray paint again
but for now im gonna do it all by hand
Do you need to thin inks when you use a airbrush
am currently starting my painting process on a new "mini" i got delivered
no
I got another sisters set before my first one got here
yes more sisters
always more
I got these guys
you cant really thin inks, you can extend them, not thin them
their viscosity wont change much by adding in water
ayy i got those in my big box too
i love my sacresant superior honestly
I also got a tau squad but I have no idea what happened to them
That’s sick
The spear looks so cool
the gold rim on the hood is so nice
i gave all the others the halberds
painted some of the tips with blood for the blood god
Might paint mine white
nice
maybe try grey brick with snow?
Might try that
okay lets say if hypothetically i am painting a chainsword right now
should i paint the part that is being held onto in steel color or try to go for a leather like grip
Ratling grime and sponge on some sliver make a good metal
That works
sponge on the grey knight steel or the leadbelcher?
i havnt even used the grey knights steel since i got leadbelcher
I dunno the difference
RAHHHHH
gks is more bluish
So the the one that you think looks good
nearly done with it then i can show the first bit done :D
I hope the feeling of getting a new set never goes away
time to put as much detail into that standard bearer as possible
got 2 squads of sisters myself and i love em
The details of the armor kinda make me nervous
theres not aas much as youd expect
chainsword for my new "mini" is done
i love toying around with blood for the blood god
What did you use for blood
This
even when dried it has that nice thick blood look to it
all shiny
happy with how the sword looks honestly
maybe i should put blood on all the teeth?
yeah
nice
That’s hot
i bought a very special mini that i will paint over the either week or entire day tomorrow
should be legal to use in a game
well her sword is done, bolter is next
Big sister
Oh nice, the Mcfarlane artist proof sororitas?
yep
got it for like 15€ on ebay
sweet, I also have one in my pile of shame, next to the darktide artist proof veteran
So im building my list for my army, i thought each addition of wargear to a unit added to its point cost, it seams however that I can just slap almost every addition i can. Exame being like theres no reason to not add a hunter killer missile to my chimera
Correct
ye they streamlined list building a lot in this edition
All the Hunter Killer missiles. Give your missiles extra missiles!
The first-turn salvo of HK missiles reminds me of the ol' first turn torpedo wall in BFG
Go ahead and box all that up and send it to me. Let me free you of your addiction and corruption. I got you man.
Na I'm good, still not finished, got tampestus Sion's and Krieg to finish up. Guard 4 life, got Yarrick on the way as well.
That's not a mini, that's a big
Rate the painting thing
Hahaha! Awesome. Gonna have to fight that Yarrick when my Ghaz is made
I will take that challenge, but no proper table top places near by
wine cork /10
I've got a nice blutack lump on a citadel base
I don’t get people who spend money on the figure holding thing
Because they look nice, functionally they arent better. My handle however costs almost $3000 as an example
That’s crazy
Why can’t you use a wine cork
because I like having my meds in an easily accessable place
Basing on my tzaangors underway
Saw this artwork and never looked back as far as basing went lol
Oh they’re so pretty!
I love Tzeetches purple
Painting can be so frustrating
RECIPE
PLEASE
First ever mini
Really good for first mini 👍
Those bases are awesome
For the bases?
I did a base of astrogranite to give the base some texture for contrast paints
Then I thinned out a white paint and covered all of the astrogranite so that the colour would pop so that any tiny sections that were left unpainted would show white through and still work with the artwork then I used doomfire magenta and semi randomly made streaks and puddles, making sure I was leaving a decent bit of the base white, then used frostheart on the bits I'd left white and then wet blended the sections into one another, you can go nuts mixing here and leave the base largely purple but just make sure you remember where the "core" of each colour section is, after the bases dried I went back and reestablished the original colours in the core of each colour section (I painted like 20 at once so I was able to do these back to back by the time of finished the last step) and then I finished with temple guard blue and used it as a highlight colour, mostly using it in the center of the blue sections and in tiny random puddles
Sorry for wall of text but they did require a really specific technique lol
Darktide ogryn of nurgle 😏
I plan to do my kill team on the regular squad theme of darktide
What do you think ?
I’ve got super shaky hands there a way to steady them
soak them in warm water for a couple minutes
cut them off and replace them for cybernetic ones
What carrying case is that? I also have a guard army but my current assortment won't fit in my magnetic tupperware crates
Also I just have to ask but do you have a master chief in your guard army
what are you talking about thats sgt john halo of the militarum
God I'm such a fake fan I'm sorry
its okay its hard to keep track of all of them i didnt even know there was a orangutang
Always has the best tips
you could replace the bones in your wrist with chicken necks sense they have auto stabilizers build into there DNA for some reason some bio mechanical augmentation
Dumbass space marine
I have finished some Etsy-brand Wraithblades
They are...very thin for Wraith constructs.
Probably better as a proxy for Storm Guardians or something
And while not new, I got around to being fancy with my Etsy-brand Shadow Specters
only expert tips here
Any tips on using pigments?
use the brush and apply them by using said brush
wear a mask and make sure you have a sealer that isnt acidic, which most sealers are
needs to be neutral, not alkaline too
are the fumes from rattle cans good to breath
No, those are actually fairly bad
its acetone after all
fuck
and acetone causes neurological damage
oh
i should be fine then
I mean, people can always get more neurological damage, look at me
I was semi-sane a few years back
fair
Finally finished goat set
LoL, yeah I snuck him in there, glad you saw
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BN1MHDLS?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details I really like it, it takes time to magnetize everything but im very happy with it. Wish I bought it sooner
bought the backpack as well
Awesome stuff, appreciate it! I actually looked at this exact box awhile ago but I had my doubts that it could fit my infantry. Box is way deeper than I had thought
Do you use some form of painting handle? It certainly helped me, you can brace the handle on your desk and the painting hand on your other hand or the handle
I’ve got double sided tape and wine Kork
poster tack and big plastic bottle cap
anything would do as long as you don't have to touch the models while painting
I don't think handles offer any advantage
Lulz every christmas 40k box is online sold out except the Space Marine box .... I would guess that they made a wrong compilation of minis xD
"you want some more bikes?!"
Only if you play white scars or raven wing, and even then
@plush swift I'm considering using this guy as inspiration for my tyranid color scheme. Can you recommend some colors to replicate the bone/brown/yellow carapace?
https://a-z-animals.com/media/2019/11/Hercules-beetle-on-moss.jpg
im screwed i have to play a game of aos this weekend and none of my models are even on bases

AAAAA I love the Eastern Hercules Decomposer beetle
I know next to nothing about beetles but this is certainly an impressive specimen. I love how the light plays on the black blue.
first vehicle almost done, just need to apply the transfers and pop it on the base
im really happy with how it turned out
titanium buff, dioxazine violet, ultramarine blue, titanium white, diarylide yellow, yellow ochre, mars black, burnt umber
avoiding cadmium and nickle pigments here
but that would be everything in there
you can go carbon black over mars black, I just prefer mars black
Appreciate your response, thanks a lot! Would Golden still be your brand of choice for these or another one? (I live in northern Europe.)
generally yes, but there are a lot of other brands in europe like lukas that are pretty good too.
Golden is better than most, but marginally better
the high end stuff all comes down to theology
Based Salamander posting
like what do they think a paint should be, take liquitex, they think paint should be garbage
but their binder be incredibly workable
Sounds very in theme with WH40k 😁
very much so, there is actually a much larger discussion of this too and how it works but most people dont want to hear it
its like why you never see ultramarine green shade but only see the red shade
its very confusing as a whole, like how a red shade blue is a cool tone but green shade is a warm tone because green is a warm color but violet is a cool color
because color temps are in reality something to be ignored
Is it? I thought that was actually universally impactful, no matter if you understand it or not, since it's intuitive.
so the whole thing is that its all relative and highly based off what palette you're using.
and what you're trying to do
because you can use a warm tone as a cool tone and have it read as a cool tone and vice versa
when I say color theory is weird, I mean it. Anyone who claims to know color theory, simply doesnt
Alright... Don't get it 😆 but I'm also not an artist or pretending to be one.
dont worry, I am and I dont get it
its very confusing
here is yellow
a warm color right?
and two other yellows
the one on the left is now a cool tone because there is a warmer color next to it
that one that was cold before? well now thats a warm tone
thats how it works
But how do they taste
Like high quality paint
Delicious
In retrospect, the first photo does not look like the warmest yellow I've seen, but I get what you mean about the importance of context.
yep, I specifically selected a mid tone as its easier to explain as its more gradual
Now the interesting part is what did you mix in to make it appear more cool?
i didnt, those are single pigment
Finished my captain with storm shield
Not 100% happy with the state of him but I can’t be arsed to work on him more
All boils down to a bad priming job
Ohhhh, yeah
Oh yeah, thats what i meant. I use a paint pot with putty too
That's hella nice
some do
but mostly for people with dyspraxia
And this is my current gent
The blood looks really good on him, but seems somewhat illogical with a necron at his feet...
Oh yeah it's all coming together
Current wip on ballistus dread "Balthar"
Leaning your hand against your other hand/desk is how I do eyes and other fine details, my hands have a constant low level tremor that I can't do anything to fix so it helps it not be a problem
I finally ordered two sets of Primaris Aggressors to make a full squad attach to my Captain (Gravis Armor). Most of models are restocked in GW store.
I had to buy them from my card, yet it's worth it 😭
Mood
I have an intention tremor so keeping my hand still while focusing is a pain
Cadia Stands!

JORMUNGANDR GRAAAAH
CADIA GRAAAAAH
Yippie stated painting
Going to try and make a forgeworld board 1st attempt
Based Admech
Current work on ballistus dread...
First space marine mini I’ve painted
Glad I’m not the only one who started with 1000 sons
Can you let minis sit in degreaser
you can physically do that, yes. It will hurt the plastic if you let it sit long enough.
if you have pewter minis, this is not a problem.
Lol nice we did the same one first
Here's mine
nice dude, howd you get the lines on the chest and head so straight mine are all janky
Use the tip of the brush, clean as much excess off the brush (I just use my fingernail which is why my nails are half painted in every pic I post lol) so that you don't have that thing happen where the paint spreads outside the width of your brush, and completely ignore the gold trim bit and only focus on getting the lines right, you can easily re-do the trim later and it covers any messiness that happened beforehand
^
Also you only have to do one colour in lines
