If you use Citadel paints, you can also use the technical "Stirland mud" or "Stirland battlemire" if you want it extra chunky to create a dirty, muddy effect

Its good for painting over with white to better sell that snowy effect, and shows things like blood or rocks very well

Im no master class painter, but I know snow can be a hard effect to sell

So i try and give a bit of advice where I can to help

For the one I did covered in snow I dry brushed white scar

That usually works really well

I decided to try and be clever and spray white onto my models witha brush and some compressed air

the coat wasn't even, but it was much more random

definitely turned out better on some models than others

its actually really easy to sell, you just need superglue and baking soda. If the color is a bit too yellow, use white with a tiny bit of ultramarine blue green shade

You can also make your own snow paint using baking soda, chalk, and gel medium

You gotta get a good consitency on the mixture though, i've ad attempts where it comes out bubbly or powdery, and looks like another white viscous substance more than snow

Snow itself though isn't hard to have, but it can be a hard effect to sell over all. I.e., maing it look like the snow is real (of which im not sure I did a great job sometimes lmao).

if you just crowd your base with a bunch of snow it looks too perfect to be believable

A battlefield would have buddy foot steps, exposed rocks, and blood in the snow, as well as dirt, mud, and guck on the model

One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to modeling is when a model is in a muddy or wet environment, but looks entirely flawless, like they just stepped off the transport

Have you tried baking soda and super glue? it is far from viscous because it creates additional crystalline structures

I have, it can look viscous if you do it dumb (like I did)

its a chemical reaction and can melt plastic because of its endothermic reaction so you have to be careful

the point isn't that snow itself is hard to make/paint, it's hard to sell the effect well

I'll need to find my snow base, I used 1 part baking soda and 20 parts glue

Mud is an easy effect to get too

but if you just paint some mud and rocks over your base, and then slap a model on it, it's going to look off, like the model doesn't belong

Stirland mud looks alright, i wouldn't call it realistic out of the bottle, but neither would I call anything else in 40k

I generally go mordant earth > stirland mud > nuln oil gloss

I'm still upset that they're reworking the torsos to take the arms and legs of the plastic kit instead of reworking the arms to take the weapons of the plastic kit that are already sold as seperate sprues.

It just makes so much more sense from both the producer and the customer side from what we know. Less work on the resin molds and less costly for the customers. It's practically GW self sabotage again, just like the attempted failcast transition.

I've made my space marine intesessors with mixed and matched bolter loadouts such as drumbmag, scoped or any other variants that i dont know the name of. Im just wondering, When playing the board game, does a space marine squad need to have the same loadouts in a squad to be playable?

So Darktide inspired me to get back into the hobby side of 40k. I haven't built or painted minis since I was in high school 20 years ago. I picked up the Sisters of Battle Combat Patrol Box and its been super fun to relearn things. But the thing im the most proud of is the painting. In high school nobody told me i needed to prime anything. So I slathered citadel paints on my army (chaos marines) But now that I know you prime. been watching Ninjon and Miniac for inspiration and this is the result:

I love the new Abaddon. I had the old metal version that had almost the same pose, but you had to kit base space marines to put under his boot. I used scissors in high school to like gouge a space marine head, super glued it under his foot (he had a captain morgan stance in the old pose) then had blood and stuff coming out.

I ordered my magnets from supermagnete.nl (german company though), with a strength of typically N52 or N48. I magnetized a turret for a fire prism, I used a pair of ring magnets for that

You want a magnet that's strong enough to hold the part in place, but not so strong that you're fighting them to separate the two magnets.

The Rapid Fire weapon profile means the weapon fires double shots at half range. So Rapid Fire 1 means the weapon fires 1 shot normally, say at 24", but takes 2 shots if you're within half range, i.e. 12" or less.

Veteran, easily. A good list is important to competitive play, but you have to keep in mind that a super veteran will know all the tricks and best use for their units while a new player is likely to know only the codex standard.

It's like the difference between Captain Titus getting shit done with sub optimal resources and "The Codex Astartes does not support this action" guy. 😁

Absolutely loved "DMing" a custom Boarding actions match of space marines vs chaos space marines with the addition of me as a DM playing a couple groups of hostile beings native to the space hulk. Mostly normal match but kind mobile hazards in the form of groups from my D&D minis including a fucking dragon 😄

But a Cadian Shock troop Squad is 65 Points. That includes 2 special weapons, 10 models.

And they not that bad actually ... 6s to hit auto wound and explode ...

if you max out on las rifles you can get 30 Shots with "First rank fire, second rank fire", 6 to hit autowound, and 6 to hit explodes. Strategem for 2 CP to shoot again ....

Cant wait to play them. Its all about MORE GUNS
