Basically, I'm 25 now, about 15 years ago, I properly got indoctrinated into Warhammer via discovering Dawn of War 1, specifically Orks. Once I got a job at 16 I started painting models for about 2-3 years. Then AoS hit, and I got salty as fuck and decided to quit and sell my models cause I needed money anyway.

That all comes down to preference really.

If you plan on basing them, you might want to do the base separate and then pin them to reduce fucking up the base as well as increasing stability.

If you plan on leaving the bases black, or just doing a simple coat of texture paint or something, may as well slap em on first.

Then it clicked maybe 6 years ago after seeing some Warhammer stuff and I was like 'Oh, right, this is Dawn of War!' and properly got into the lore

I really fuckin' like Wraithguards. Aside from them being fuckin' baller in DoWII's multiplayer (at least vs AI), they're a damn good canvas for me to work with

First lot I worked with were for DnD. Since the Techpriests there were using them as muscle by tearing the souls out of prisoners and jamming them in statues using a broken ritual they were hoping to brute-force fix so they can safely transfer their own into more perfect machine constructs, I made them look more like statues taken care of by an old race
Since they were. Their lore is the same as Wraithguard in actual Warhammer, for the most part. Except the Elves did it more of reverence for fallen guardians who felt they had more to give. But I digress

I always use water droppers with the same palette he has. Always a perfect blend just by eyeballing it.

If it aint broke dont fix it

Water droppers won't preserve your paint though unless you keep adding more water which is also going to dilute your paint and you'll end up getting clumps

Clumps if you let it dry out and try to revitalise it with water I mean

Well you are supposed to clean up after all over wash. Pretty much paint it all over again and leave it showing only where it pooled.

If you just leave it like that, it will look like that.

The classic GW style painting steps are:

1. Basecoat
2. Wash
3. Re-establish base coat
4. First edge highlight
5. Second edge highlight

Idealy you want to use a decal softener instead of 'ardcoat and water. It will work, but it will end up looking like a shitty sticker, rather than part of the piece.

To be fair I just cut the transfer out. Put it in some water for about 10 seconds then use a brush to move it to the slightly dampened area

Yeah, that should work. So put a coat of ardcoat on the entire panel you want it on, layer of the softener on it, soak the decal in the softener - be sure to leave plenty of the clear coat around it, it will get VERY SOFT so work carefully, idealy using a flat brush and slide if of to where you want it, it might crincle or warp a bit, but it should get smooth during the process, you can just play with it with the brush till you are happy, let it dry and give it another layer of varnish/ardcoat to unify the sheen.

But honestly for simple patterns, just learn how to freehand them. Way less hassle than decals.

Even if you do it the right way, it will stick out like a sore thumb because of the difference in sheen.

For future headaches, you should apply the transfer before you wash and weather something so that those steps can help seal the transfer in for ya after you hit it with some matte

He just happened to weather the heck out of his flag. In that case its best to save the wash for after you apply so the transfer blends in to the model more and gives you a clean but still dirty look

So yeah, I'd say painting one or two to get a hang of it is not a bad idea. That being said, painting is relatively easy, even on complicated models, just takes a bit more care and precision.

Is there a method to make paint brushes stiff?

No matter how soft I press or run it over anything, bristles will go their own way. A Windsor and newton Sable and synthetics I’ve bought both are too “malleable” I guess? They act like brushes basically lol. But I need them a little sturdier for freehanding small lines and stuff

There are boar/pig bristle brushes, but those are typically flat, not round.

Gotcha, I keep them in shape and use brush soap etc but still can’t get them to be stiff enough to stay on the tip as I move my brush with minimal pressure

you could try to buy the da Vinci school round tip brushes, as stupid as it may sound, this brushes are designed for kids and they are much more stiffer than a classsic WaN Sable, and a benefit ... they are cheap af, i used them to start up training my edge highlighting

I am not a fan of these. If they were like shoulder mounted it'd be better but those guns are about the same size as the marine themselves. Add a few pouches and they are 90's comics Rob Liefeld. The guns look like a cleaner Ork guns. They are seemingly belt fed while it looks like a Starship Troopers nuke launcher with an underslung mini rocket launcher so there is no real looking barrel for bolter rounds.

If it was on an Ork I'd be down for it. On Marines like this where they shoulder them like rifles it looks awkward. If they were underslung like Firstborn Heavy Bolters or Shoulder Mounted then it would look much better. But the fundemental problem is that there is just too much shit going on with the model.
