I've seen a cool technique for weathering paint chips that uses a piece of sponge dipped in either a steel or brown (if more corrosion) colour and once removing most of the paint off the sponge, lightly dappling the edges of the mini. You get all these small flecks of your colour that look like chipped paint. Going to do it to a bunch of my Tau battlesuits.

Vallejo flow improver is also listed as non-toxic on the bottle and it's 2-butoxy-ethanol, which is incredibly poisonous

Anybody have a good reccomendation for Metallics for drybrushing? I use vallejo model color silver and vallejo game gunmetal but both seem to be kinda flaky and just end of leaving metallic specs on places I don't want after I use them to drybrush

You will not find one in hobby paint.

You actually have to go into higher end paint to find the ones that are really good for dry brushing because everything else uses Mica.

Go to Jackson's and get Lascaux studio bronze. You can also look for something called metallic acrylic gouache, Turner makes it and I don't know who else I haven't tried it but I have a feeling it would work really good as a dry brush though I am planning on picking some up very soon because I really do want to test it myself.

Now remember one really important thing, lascaux studio bronze is not something you should use in an airbrush or ever lick. Also you need to be very careful with it because it is not environmentally friendly, like most metallic paints, however they list on the bottle that it's not. The aluminum is the safest of them all for environmental and your own health

The Britannia silver contains chromium metal, The gold all contain zinc and copper, which means don't get that on your skin and definitely don't lick your brush or a brush that has been in the same cup as those, etc

They are phenomenal metallic paints, but don't fuck around with them. Unless it's the aluminum because that's relatively safe compared to all the other ones

Also good look making those particular bases easily as you seem to think. They might look simple, but they are actualy quite complicated. There are multiple levels and textures, meaning each plate has to be cut exactly to size, sanded, fit, gaps filled, details added...You say it would take 5 minutes. I make my own bases. 5 minutes is what glueing just a plate of card to a base and cutting it round will take you.

If you want to replicate that, I can imagine spending 30-60 minutes on each base.

You don't. You just avoid getting the paint more than halfway up the brush when loading and wash it often. My recommendation would be to avoid your expensive brushes when using them.

Finished drilling all my barrels. I'll be damned if the Fire Warriors get a drilling though. My smallest bit is too big for their guns, plus I don't think it'll be worth it

Good job. It's a thankless job, but it makes your minis look so much better. Even a very well done paintjob can be completely ruined by a not drilled barrel.

I'm actually most proud of the cyclic ion blaster. I drilled all the way through the 2 side barrels so that it looks like it can fire properly if one of them were to rotate into place

Good luck, all us Tau players will be snapping them up because boxes like the Commander don't have enough guns on the sprues to have the max loadout you can take for each gun.

Can equip up to 4 of each gun, but the sprues give you 1, so everyone with a Commander is "missing" 3 of each gun.

One of the things I'm hoping works ok is having 3 lines of fire warriors, with the breachers up front firing at 14"/8", then my pulse carbine strike team at 24" and my pulse rifle at 36". And had this idea that the front line would fall back while the other 2 lines cover it, because it just seems thematically cool if you can pull that off

Heating up a needle and using it to melt a hole for the barrel and then filing the melted edge gives you what you're looking for cheaply and can have some good results with practice.

Alternatively you can get PCB drill bits in ultra fine width.

It's either too much paint or you are not doing it lightly enough and the bristles go into the recesses.

But armor panels in general are not great area to use drybrushing on. Flat areas catch the bristles as well and you end up with paint on them. It's better reserved for areas with lot of texture, like fur or chainmail.

Hobby whites and yellows are generaly terrible. I have no personal experience, but profesional grade acrylics are supposed to be much better and about the same cost as hobby paints. Golden titanium white fluid acrylic is supposed to be really good so try looking for that. Just don't airbrush it or eat it since...titanium, you know.
