that's okay, i magnetized multiple contemptors and only got one magnet the wrong way around and that wasn't even me i got someone else to do that specific one and just figured they knew what to do

My major error was not realising I had to magnetise the flight pods until after I had glued them to the suit, had to cut them off then reglue, but no harm done

Plasma was done with a dark green base for the coils, then lighter green drybrush around it, then highlight with brighter green watered down around the middle of the Tesla coils. Then add more white and go further down. Eyes, base with dark green highlight first half with brighter green, then around half of that with brightest green. Finish with just a pinch of yellow in that brightest green, and a dot of white in the other end of the lens

I am not an ass enough to point it out to people when they share their things, but undrilled barrel definitely ruins the impression of a well painted mini for me. You have spent all that time painting it up, doing your best and you ruin it all because you can't be bothered with a step that takes like 30 seconds.

It just requires a lot of patience and I don't think a lot of people want to put forth that kind of effort if they're just playing the game. I will still drill going forward but man... If you can, source out some of the start collecting box's, they come with the leman russ tank, a infantry squad and a commissar. On the leman russ tanks, you don't need to magnatize the sponsons, they're snug enough of a fit after painting that they stay in but if you get a leman russ demolisher I'd watch a guide to magnatize the main turret since it has a lot of options.

The trick is making a smaller pilot hole and not to drill too deep. I usualy go with a 0,4 drill bit first, than going for a full 1mm. About 1mm depth. For extra fancy points, put a tip of your hobby knife in once you're done drilling and scrape a bit of a bevel in.

I think if you're unsure just go with the regular baneblade, it really is just a powerhouse and in the new codex its T9 with 30wounds and a 2+ save

For now I'd say get the start collecting box for guard and maybe also scions. Scions aren't as versitile as karskins but karskins don't have a boxset outside killteam yet

I'd wait for the 9th edition release in january before making a list. Scions will become Elites in the next book and battlescribe isn't up to date yet
Also HQ is turning into a command squad attaché of your officer and some various models with him as a squad the still gets the look out sir rule
Also if you do a scion army that isn't Officio prefectus you don't get the regimental bonus for scions, so while you get tanks they dont get those extra buffs.

I put another coat of grey knights steel on my terminator, dry brushed with runefang steel, painted the gun with abaddon black and did the gold stuff with retributor armor base paint

Anything different about sentinels
So Scout sentinels can now take plasma and can be set up ANYWHERE in deployment 9 inches away from the enemy deployment zone and models. They're now T6 and 7W with a 12 inch movement. The Chainsword is good now giving -2AP and 2 damage. Both Sentinels have a 4+ws and 4+Bs skill. Armored sentinels still have the 3+ saving but also get key word armoured so damage 1 weapons make the sentinel get +1 saving throw. The chainsword also makes the sentinels get twice the attacks so they now get 4 attacks I think at S6 -2AP 2DMG so they're almost, if not better than bullgryn now which is funny. Those poor bullgryn mauls are so sad against space marines.

The method I suggest is hitting up a store near you, if available, and get a hands on introduction to the hobby.
Nothing really beats looking over the boxes, smelling new Armybooks and having a chat with other enthusiasts.

Instead go to any model hobby store (you know, for people who build planes and stuff), get yourself a proper pair of nippers, a hobby knife with exchangable scalpel blades and cheapo replaceble brushes for your first minis - you'll ruin them anyway, since it takes a while to build proper habits to keep your brushes for long.

You can google it up. Look for a store means for plastic miniatures. Does not have to be just WH, planes, boats, tanks etc. They will have eveything you might need and likely will have online delivery.
But it is very likely there is at least one somewhere in your location.

Just avoid Citadel tools, since GW is really ripping people off on those. Paints are okey, but I'd really recommend not limiting yourself to that brand. It might be a bit of inconvenience at the start because of the conversions and so, but eventualy you'll learn how to pick a proper paint just by looking at it. Which will in turn give you an option to use every paint in the world to get exactly what you want.

Also, if you really wanna save some buck, look a bit into a color theory. Technicaly you could mix any paint in the world from three primary colors + black and white. You don't have to get that far, but it is quite useful to know how to modify the paints you already have to get something you might not exactly want a full bottle of.

I'm going to point out one thing here, Most hobby paints are low grade and are not that much different than craft paint, If you mix in a little bit of cornstarch to your craft paint it actually becomes effectively the same thing as a hobby paint I'm not even getting about that. So you're only real choices are professional grade paints which are vastly superior, we're not talking about heavy body tear though we're talking about fluid acrylics which are a little bit thinner than hobby paints, or craft paint if you don't have a lot of money. The only thing hobby paint does is provide convenience, but I'm always chronically broke because I'm a full-time artist so I have to bring up the cost-saving measures.
Cornstarch is a marvelous thing to put in paint, It doesn't really alter the color that much, and increases opacity by a ton
It does however have some longevity issues but I don't think anyone here except for me cares about something lasting for 50+ years

This is actually a chronic issue with Vallejo hobby lines, so the whole thing about the Vallejo hobby lines there are actually discarded student grade lines from that were not good enough to be in their professional grade lines, that they upcharge a ton for. They aren't consistent because they don't actually do any quality control over them, unlike their professional grade paint which is okay at best. The professional grade paint is not worth the cost of entry with them, especially in the US went for a few dollars more you can just get golden which has a better binder and more pigmentation.
However for hobby paints Vallejo is one of the better ones because they are some of the more consistent ones, I've heard AK is good but I will not touch AK because I've boycotted them due to them using Holocaust footage to sell paint, which is something that I wouldn't even do and thats saying something. I've tried most of the hobby brands out there, The only one that wowed me at all was Vallejo metal color, I was expecting bad but it came out okay, I just think it's really expensive for what you're getting because you can go get lascaux for cheaper and that's one of the most expensive paints in the world

Warning for you guys this product here is incredibly toxic and listed as non-toxic, if its not genuine, and it's being listed as natural, they are lying. The mixture to copy it uses py43, which contains lead, which is worse. If they aren't using py43, then it's synthetic py42, which means it's not natural at all.
Chromium oxide is a heavy metal, and one of the few pigments that is recommended to not use for hobbiests. It's also one of the most common greens

I am no expert in pigments and chemistry like you are. What I do understand is law tho. I'd be very very surprised if a brand as large as vallejo sold anything dangerous and toxic without it being specificaly marked on the packaging, including the required hazard squares. I'd be even more surprised if they were actualy claiming the opposite. It's not just a lawsuit waiting to happen, the resulting fines would be pretty much liquidatory for the company. I have quickly checked my paints (mostly citadel and vallejo) and all of them have the "conforms to the ASTM D 4236" mark. Meaning they are obligated to list both the acute and chronic health hazard on the packaging. There is no end to human scumbaggery, but I am inclined to believe they did their due dilligence, since failing in adhering to that ASTM would be enough to send the whole company under.

ASTM isnt a government thing, its a voluntary standards testing, of which there are only 2 companies in the world for it, and ASTM is I believe the only one that does paint, paint has very little regulation over it and I can legally sell lead paint without listing it as lead(PY43 commonly has lead in it, and this is a common pigment), this happens all the time with paints. Spain has even less regulation over paint, which is why most hobby companies are stationed there. Also Their flow improver is listed as non-toxic, however its almost pure butoxy ethanol, which is known to cause lung scaring, respirator failure, can kill in inhaled or ingested, etc. They are not obligated to list anything in reality.
Most natural browns also have lead, mercury, arsenic, etc in them because they are dirt.
Basically, they are either A) lying about them being natural pigments or B) they are lying about toxicity
Plus hobby companies will break laws all the time to sell you products, because hobbiests dont know anything about paint chemistry and will listen to the most popular youtuber as gospel for safety, so until someone like me gets traction, nothing will be changed and they can skirt those laws like prop 65. ASTM also can also mean a lot of things when it comes to paints, like ratios and what not, not safety persay

If we really want to be legal about this, the pigment powders also have to have warning labels on them because pigments like carbon black are highly carcinogenic due to their particle size

astm for paint isnt regulated by most governments and isnt really enforced at all for paint, take it from someone who makes paint.
also ASTM compliance strictly isnt enforced by law as its a private company that has its own set standards for testing, just like other standards companies

and its easy to get

Been a hot minute since I painted minis, I was still in school. Gonna paint my unpainted Hero Quest boxed set to try and get back into it. I had like, 500ish points of death guard painted up like loyalists back in the day. With some IG bassilisks (one had the fatter gun, I forget the name) I can’t remember if the legion ones were either not released or just super expensive at the time.
So i can re-use those if I make a Moebian 6th army, though I’m trying to figure out what else to do for vehicles.
