I've heard a lot of people complain about paint adhesion with army painter primers. Some of it can be mitigated by priming lightly at low humidity, but really you're looking at wanting to use varnish to seal layers

Humidity effects rattle can primers quite a bit regardless of brand. I have a few different pots of paint on primer because low humidity days are rare in my neck of the woods too.

Right now there is a lot of rain and I somehow doubt I can get low humidity for the foreseeable future

Filing/sanding is what I do when that happens and it works great. Use at the very least a rough grit of 400-600 and smooth it out with an 800. For the smoothest finish, go 400->800->1000. You can go higher, but I find that pretty overkill.

This is part of the reason I got myself an airbrush. Rattle cans are a no go for most of the year where I live, almost never the right conditions for it.

I've never used Army Painter primer cans so can't say anything about that.
Just wanted to chip in that I've never had problems with GW's primers in such a way.

And if I didn't take it wrong, you said that you were new with using rattlecan for primer.
If so I just wanna give a little tip just incase. Don't hold the can straight at the model when spraying, make a sweeping motion left to right (or right to left, whatever works) while spraying.

Tried AP speedpaints using both the zenithal and overbrushing method, to get out of my painting slump. Picked Alaitoc instead of my typical ulthwe to try out brighter colours. I must say, not a fan of these methods for really bright and colourful armies like eldar, feels to me more fitting in darker, grungier armies, like kill team guard or orks, skaven, drukhari covens. Certain colours (like the bone on the guns) doesn't look too great blending to black imo. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Camera pumped up the contrast and brightness, minis are a bit darker.

They do, in limited places on the legs, arms and chest of certain aspect warriors and the guardians

It's just that GW's boxart paints the undersuit the same colour as the plates, which I can understand from a visual perspective (model detail isn't anywhere close to the book cover art, so the undersuit might stand out more) but it feels odd to paint fabric and plate the same colour.

I try to cut them as randomly as possible, maybe even trying to tear t off a bit by hand

I paint them the same color, and most tend to do the same. Only place the undersuit is visible is at the upper legs and maybe lower back, so I don't really feel it's worth the effort, especially as I don't really think it would look any better. Oftentimes washes and shading makes it look a bit darker than the plates anyway in my experience.

Does anyone have experience with Methanol?

I was easily able to strip the acryllic paint one of the coats I had painted but this primer is so damn resilient

They have been in the bath for like a few 4 or 5 hours without much progress

you should buy isopropyl alcohol 30 sec in the liquid and you can brush almost all the paint in one go it's just magic

Ok so it turns out a lot of the paint gets stripped when I am letting them dry with Methanol

so when they fully dry, I am washing them with clean water and giving them an ethanol bath and hopefully should get rid of all that primer

@opaque snow if you’re in the US, head to a 99 cent store and pick up a bottle of LA Totally Awesome and a toothbrush. Soak for 12-24 hours then brush until you get to bare plastic. If you have an ultrasonic cleaner, the process takes 5-10 minutes.

So I've been trying more of these army painter speed paints and I'm not too enthused by the results. Sometimes it dries blotchy, and it's difficult to control its flow around small details. Does anyone else have experience with them, what are your thoughts? So far, the more I use them on test models, the more inclined I am to save them for terrain, blotchy textiles (leathers, skaven/cultist clothes, etc), effects like fire and magic, and use proper paints on the minis themselves.

They might reactivate when highlighting, but at that point, if I wanted to highlight, I have a feeling it wouldn't be much more effort to base coat + wash to achieve a better result than the speedpaint, and that would have no issue with layering. In other words, even though the value/time might be good, I don't feel the value is all that great. Maybe the guardian sculpts are just showing their age, idk.

I've always seen the Cadian uniform as the universal Guardsmen equipment.

Catachans pretty much just ignore to equip parts like the upper body armor as it probably just slows them down where in a Death World mobility probably means life or death.
Besides, on Death Worlds the armor might give so little protection that it might be more beneficial to not use it.

DKoK I've always seen that seeing how they've been so secret about how they are still able to field so many as they do they also made their own stuff for the most parts.
And iirc they take the stuff from their fallen to give to the new troops anyways so they might not get a lot of new supplies of equipment anyways.

Biostrip 20 is a great one for stripping mini's, I've used it myself and it get's everything off in about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how thick the paint is.

Hah nah im just quick with a clean brush to soak up any overspill. The eye was white - blob of black templar, dot of white then glossed with ardcoat. One the ardcoat was dry i just went around the whole eye with volupus pink and wicked up any excess

I've decided on using the Breaking Bad Flag 🏳️‍⚧️ as the basis of the colour scheme, with pink and white making up the bulk of the colouring and leaving blue for accents and details (like freehand marks of Slaanesh), the white im going to do in a marble style and mostly use on marines and vehicles and apply a high gloss varnish with a matte varnish on the other colours

I think that colour scheme would turn out REALLY nice if done right.

Perhaps, as stated above I've thought about using Blissbarbs as cultists, but it'd be pain having to remove their quivers and the bows on some of the models without butchering the whole sculpt I think, plus finding suitable arms to use for ranged weapons

I may have to resort to getting a custom 3d sculpt done to perfectly fit them, especially for 2 handed ranged weapons

At the end of the day, they are Slaaneshi cultists, so I could just assemble them as is and call it a day, writing off their bows and arrows in a sci-fi setting as having super heightened senses so they can hit weak spots

I used Contrast: Creed Camo for the green and Black Templar for the black.
I tried out Zenithal Priming as well, so sprayed all black and then I sprayed Grey Seer from an aprox 45 degree angle from all directions and finished with some from directly above.

The Orange I used Contrast: Gryph-Hound Orange over Runesteel Fang.
Metal is Leadbelcher and Nuln Oil (using the old Nuln since I still have some left).
The Meltagun muzzle I used Contrast: Snakebite Leather over Leadbelcher and some Nuln Oil to darken the front of it.

Very simple and few colors as I wanted to try and simplify as much as possible but still get a decent finish.

It seems we have the same approach as I'm also trying to simplify/speedpaint as much as possible but still get a somewhat decent finish.

I use the slapshot/grisaille technique with contrasts for a few weeks now, as it feels quite great to be able to paint 20 minis in 2 afternoons. The first 5 minis I've painted looked very good but I spent a year and a half painting them, so I'll probably be 70 year old before finishing an army at that rate. 😄

About the Creed Camo on the armor, I find what you did impressive, as there's no pooling or "splotches", which is my main problem with Creed Camo on the armor. I tried following advices of people who are talented with contrast, such as Juan Hidalgo and Warhipster, but for the moment it's tough not to have "stains" on the shoulder panels.

Oh and I'm definitely going to blood raven your technique for the meltagun muzzle.

I'm trying to be careful with the pooling yeah.
while the paint is still wet I use the tip of the brush to lead the pools into the recesses. or damp a brush and let it suck up most of the pooling.

the pauldrons were the most tricky ones for sure to get good.
I simply tried to just start from the top then go down one stroke at a time, making sure to not let too much paint off the brush.
Contrast isn't as optimal on flat surfaces as it tend to get uneven when there are no textures for it to seep into.
Just takes some practice and make the best of it.
Can see that there are some darker spots here and there on like the helmets and shoulders.
But couldn't really avoid it many of the times due to making too many brush strokes on the same area tended to just make it worse.

I'm a slow painter, why I'm trying to simplify it.
These 10 dudes took me less than a week to make.

still have the minor stuff left. but that'll be done in a whiffy as soon as I get the paint for it.

using Contrast over a metal base makes the shimmer of the metal shine through, leaving a nice metallic effect.
Why I used it for the all the lenses and goggles as well. giving them some reflection.
The picture doesn't really show it, but the Meltagun muzzle have a more metallic look and not as "flat" as in the picture.

It is, the lines aren't straight, the rust tones are slightly off, the verdigris isn't genuine but a synthetic imitation I made because I didn't have the time to make some genuine pigment, and I used acrylics... It's bad for what I normally do.

My career is art conservation, so my painting is bad to me considering the works I have to work on daily

mix that with teaching art... you find that nothing is good because good is subjective and no one can agree on whats good, everyone is bad because people can agree on whats bad. Plus good you can easily manipulate people into thinking it is(like Jackson Pollock becoming famous and being considered good because of the CIA's culture war with russia during the cold war)

I honestly take way to much pride in my work, which is why I enjoy hobby painters because it dials my egotism way back, the amount of effort and passion they put into things is a good change of pace at times. Reminds me of the oldest rule of art, the art is in the flaws and not the perfection.
