I tried oil paints on some tester bases to see how it would act, and I found them to take a really long time to dry, even with fast drying mediums. What's your experience with them?

Oil paints need a fixer to really "dry" even on canvas. Without a fixative applied to it, it will always be slightly wet

Yeah they're slow to cure, but that's an advantage most of the time when you can go with white spirits and reactivate them to mess around with them if you're not happy with it. I usually leave them to dry overnight when I'm done with them

Then I use a varnish to seal them in

What's your consistency for your oil paints? Closer to layer paint or a wash? But yeah, the varnish seal is a good idea. Do you use an airbrush for it?

Starting my second army as craftworld eldar. Got the combat patrol and things are looking good so far

Its just regular sprue with sharp cuts in the top to give it the crystal look. I painted it with magenta fluorescent from Vallejo (not recommended as it took a lot of layers to get good coverage) then highlighted with a pink/white. I finished it off with gloss varnish too which i think helps give it a shiny crystal look in normal lighting

Honestly as long as you cut it small and shape it right, it will look like crystal pretty easily. Check out YouTube as there are plenty of tutorials on stuff like that. Good luck!

IGHT SO, and guesses on daemons crusade rules. Im gonna guess they will probably have the most amount of rules as you basically have 5 different armies in 1 codex (maybe even 6)

my guess will probably be completely different crusade rules for each god, maybe crusade rules for a belakor army, and rules for like, what evers like mixed armies that arent belakor

or, maybe coem kind of tribute system, like you tribute kills, objectives, and all taht shit to a specific god for buffs of that kind og god.

so if you have like both nurgle and slaanesh models you can make tribute to one or the other every when ever the fuck is finished

so if you want to have alot of diversity in buffs, maybe you bring nurgle daemons with your slaanesh focused army and nurgle could buff those nurgle models or maybe even debuff the enemy models or do some terrain aura debuff bullshit

but you also have harder warp storms checks

unless you bring belakor of course

You can use like regular acrylics, but getting the thin layer consistency consistently is the challenge you will run into with acrylics that aren't formulated for mini painting.

Like your standard canvas painting acrylics are just much thicker out of the tube (and oil paints come with their own challenges on minis) so I don't recommend it, but you can do it if you want

You can get the same results with a brush as well but it will just take a lot more time, my contemptor's shoulders were similar in tone, a bit darker. They were brushed on black, eshin grey and fenrisian grey mixed together in thin layers from darker tones to lighter tones

As in, in the standard citadel line? Not that I know of. You can mix a silver with a blue paint though to get that sheen. You could also try thin layers of contrast paint over a metallic (silver), but I am unsure if that would come out shiny or not.

So I'm new to 40k and thinking about starting an army soon, painted a few non GW minis for practice and it's fun. Trying to decide between Ultramarines or their successor the Void Tridents. both are cool but having a hard time choosing

I dont have nuln oil since im a new painter but I substituted it for abbadon black + water instead of using agrax earth shade since I didnt want a brownish color. Works alot better than I expected
