It told him it would help if it could possess one of his sons and that son was the first Obliterator. The daemon is basically the infection and has since been able to influence many marines, typically being contracted when a marine is too focussed on destroying people with guns.

Like a magical disease that infects through ideas and thoughts i guess. Its a weird daemon for sure

They ascribe emotions and sapience to the hive mind in ways that I think are less interesting than having it as a sort of formless force of nature.
