The tactic with the boss is to beat down the shield with melee attacks, dodge the big attacks and block if he's using a sword and doing a flurry of attacks. Putting down medipacks next to him lets everyone wail on him more safely, if you're vet your starting grenades should be useful if a bunch of horde enemies spawn.
