Can't use longer weapons the same way. And in general, you don't need to exactly hug enemies to do damage to them in melee. Get a feel for the reach with weapons like thammers and relic blades and cycle combos to tighten your efficiency.

You have far more time than you think by comparison to something faster with shorter range. You have time to respond and/react with the smaller weapons yes, even better dodges and all but the same principle of leveraging reach translates heavily into two-handed weapons the majority of the time.

Play with the space of your weapon and keep that in mind. That's the key.

My top 3 issues with the mode are:
-You dont get to pick your archetype from all of them (I understand that its to encourage players to try new things and to play into the randomness)
-There isnt enough Indulgences/Perks, maps, and Archetypes
-Cant pick minor indulgences leaving you with only 4 choices all game: Round 0, 3, 6, and 9.

Yea, just hold onto any weapons with that sort of stat spread. If you don’t get lucky with weapon drops and you want to pusher higher difficulties at max level, then you can just level those up to max if needed. I wouldn’t consider it until you’re pushing Damnation difficulty though. (Unless you’re drowning in materials at that point)
