He started as an oddity (First black man in Japan) and rose to actually having a comfy life but wasnt a Samurai. He can be interesting without being a samurai. Anyway, after Odas death his eventual fate isnt super well documented. He wasnt killed in the aftermath of Oda being assassinated, but its unclear exactly what happened next. He likely returned to Africa on the next trade ship out of Japan. Sadly, starting as a slave of Portugese traders they didnt bother to really care about his experiences when he returned to the Portugese empire...

Yasuke was pretty much an exception to the rule. He was in a weird beaurcratic grey area where they wouldnt not pay a member of the court working a job but they also wouldnt add him to the strict and rigid hierarchy of "castes" within Japan at the time. He was in a grey area basically. If you want to call him a samurai you rely on a huge technicality basically. Never referred to as such, but got paid like he was. Wasnt treated as one with the many rules a Samurai had to follow as well. He was in a REALLY weird spot. I strongly prefer the words "courtier" for him, and possibly "advisor". Yasuke wasnt too involved with politics that we know of and the people that killed Oda didnt have anything against him. But his role would be a powerful unnofficial source of power if he did have an interest. Much like the British "Groom of the stool".

Yasuke wasnt in Japan long, so I mostly go with "Courtier" as I doubt he had much interest in politics that quickly. Especially since he started as, I THINK, a scribe for the Portugese. (Must've been a bit of a language savant!)

My favorite part of Samurai history is they never adjusted the stipends they got paid so they were chronically poor murder-hobos that moonlighted as bouncers a ton. Although keeping your Daimyos constantly on the verge of bankruptcy was a legitimate political move to keep them in line. Daimyo had to make these super expensive journeys to serve the Shogun in Kyoto directly. And they were expected to travel with a huge party in grand fashion to keep them paying a lot
