People these days are more sensitive because now they have the means to speak up against what has happened to them. In years more distant, a lot of people were forced to endure the mistreatment at the hands of others, and were expected to be quiet about it or it got worse. Those people didn't have the support of others.

These days, people are willing to speak up for each other, themselves, and protect others. It's not a lack of thick skin, but being tired of having to put up with it at all when they don't have to. You don't have to like it, but this is what people do for each other and themselves now.
