I think I understand why it happened in its entirety. I used to know the devs. Even played with them and was on a stream with them

They were burnt out on Awesomenauts, which was their main game at the time. There was a risk they took making their own dedicated matchmaking server so people wouldn't get thrown in with the same 3 tryhards all the time but that was a huge money sink.

They wanted to make something new, they tried making Blightbound (2D Diablo kind of game) that was supposed to be published by Devolver Digital but they got screwed over by them. They were supposed to advertise the game and push it on release but never did and ghosted them.

So, with an unprofitable game with no inspiration or money left, they went bankrupt and left it up for grabs. Now we have Atari trying to make it playable via Steam again

that thing where ads don't get pushed when its expected happens alot and its usually a publisher trying to cut their losses and it does suck alot. Devolver has had some success shadow releasing some things but its usually a sign they weren't super optimistic for whatever reason (valid or not).... and yeah that does suck when people get trapped in something creative they don't really want to be in anymore. Best case they should have done a real handoff (like hoppo did with epic with risk of rain since they just don't want to do risk of rain anymore) but sometimes things spiral before you realize you should make that choice

There are cases where engineers are needed and not allocated, mechwarrior online is actually an example of that, all the engineers for that game where put onto MW5 and then MW5clans.
