The best guide is one that says to play what "feels" right, imo. I started out with a combat knife because I wanted to learn enemy attack patterns better to dodge more effectively and hit that "20 dodge" penance, but now it means I can play basically any weapon after some minor adjustments and learning how the weapon swings/shoots.
