Zealot = Rush in, heavily focused on a certain group
Psyker = Glass cannon
Ogryn = Meat shield heavy hitter
Arbiter = DLC privelege.

honestly it depends on your background; if you played Vermintide, you'd probably enjoy Zealot mroe as it meshes better with the more melee-oriented playstyle; if you like Left4Dead or other first-person shooters, than it's going to be Veteran.

Veteran however is a bit more squishy but still can put up the fight.

He still has compensations that let him survive a bit longer, especially whenever getting shot.
Like perk that gives you toughness regen as long as nothing that has shovel punches you.

Veteran is usually the first character you'd pick. At least he was my first pick with Cutthroat personality.

vet's my fave. its a solid starting pick to figure out the game's mechanics. have fun.

Gameplay wise.
The Veteran can be decent at Melee and mid-combat.
But excells at longer-range bouts, along with bringing supportive ordeals like toughness regen, picking out elites, and giving better resources / crowd control.

The Arbiter however.
Has a walking 'anti-elite alarm' in the shape of a dog.
With CC out the wazoo, literal pocket psykers out the rear, enough toughness to make even a space marine of nurgle blush, and a heavy hitting melee/ranged weapon (only for them) so hard hitting, that it'll make even a Tau with tank-sized cannon (As in, the cannon is the size of a tank) look confused.

The Veteran is def' a good go to choice, as they dont lack either health, or toughness, and can aid your team a lot more with their options of perks, it feels good to play Vet.

Arbiter.
Arbiter just runs the enemies down.

Nah the whole class is a balance travesty. After going sweaty tryhard on zealot running different builds for ages I got to where most people could never keep up with me in a lot of metrics, now I outperform my own zealot on a class I've put very little effort into

Balance is relative. Its not about if somethign "can be done", theoretically a brand new character could beat anything in the game with base weapons and talents.

Balance is about how the player feels rewarded for playing or mastering a given playstyle. If a person puts a lot of time and energy into mastering a class, that can feel very rewarding. Vets who can snipe everything in sight in like two seconds enjoy doing that, its fun for them. For them to prepare to do taht and not get the opportunity to because someone else effortlessly pressed the Premium DLC "I kill everything in the level with one button class" literally robs them of that experience

I think you're right that balance is relative and possibly unobtanium in a grander scheme. I think the issue at large is that FS has designed their characters to all be overlapping - much like they did in VT2 - so that everyone can have the opportunity to complete a mission/havoc/whatever. I think every class theoretically has an an instant kill button to some degree: ogryn with barrage and frag bomb, vets with plasma gun and krak grenades, zealots with chastise and two-handed sword. I can't name pskyers and arbitrators off the top of my head but hopefully you see my point.
