maybe work on your melee skills before worrying about killing things at a range? the higher you climb in difficulty the more you have to work on melee and that has more to do with falling into a rhythm then it does with speed

make sure you're being wary of sightlines and use your cover... also use the suppression mechanic to help close gaps or to buy you time to get out of a kill box. And yeah if you're getting swarmed then work on your movement in hordes, even if you aren't killing any you should be able to wrangle them into a circle mob
