I don't mind the cherrypicking if it's not Ogryn or Scum-level, where you're either locked off from options (ogryn) or things that are huge buffs to your effectiveness are in the side of the tree that doesn't support that playstyle otherwise (melee scum).

But it's cool in situations like arbitrator and vet where you can branch off into small parts of the other trees to pick out things that enforce your playstyle in different ways.
